Please see the article published on Monday, April 24, 2017. For Immediate Release Two New Jersey High School Students Receive College Scholarships From Major League Baseball Players to Commemorate National Volunteer Week Teens from Bergenfield H.S. and West Deptford H.S. among those students being honored for their leadership in the Action Team national youth volunteer program New York, NY, Monday, April 24, 2017 … In honor of National Volunteer Week, Major League baseball players are recognizing two New Jersey high school student volunteers with $2,000 college scholarships to celebrate their dedication to community service, it was announced today by the Major League Baseball Players Trust. Zainab Ali from Bergenfield H.S. in Bergenfield, NJ and Kyra D’Costa from West Deptford H.S. in West Deptford Township, NJ are among 20 Action Team Captains nationally being recognized today. All scholarship recipients are members of the Action Team® national youth volunteer program created and administered by the Major League Baseball Players Trust and Volunteers of America. The scholarship awards are based on the volunteer activities, academic achievements and leadership skills of high school students serving as Action Team Captains. As Action Team Captains, each of the scholarship recipients take on the responsibility of planning and organizing Action Team-centric volunteer events in and around their schools, while encouraging others to get involved in their communities. This school-year, Major Leaguers and more than 500 Action Team Captains in 100 high schools across the country are working together to inspire the next generation of volunteers, while helping those in need. This is the tenth straight year the Players Trust has awarded college scholarships to recognize the efforts of Action Team Captains. Each scholarship application was reviewed by a committee comprised of representatives of the Major League Baseball Players Trust and Volunteers of America, and included Major Leaguers Mark Melancon of the San Francisco Giants and Craig Stammen of the San Diego Padres. “On behalf of all Major League baseball players and our partners, Volunteers of America, the Players Trust is honored to take this opportunity during National Volunteer Week to recognize the outstanding commitment and passion for helping others that Action Team Captains across the country demonstrate on a daily basis,” stated Melissa Persaud, director of the Players Trust. “Also, it is with great pride that today we announce the winners of our 2017 Action Team scholarships. The scholarship winners’ dedication to their communities is truly inspiring, and all the more impressive because they’ve answered this calling so early on in their lives, while juggling school and other activities. I also want to thank Mark Melancon and Craig Stammen for their ongoing support of the Action Team, including their efforts to help us select our scholarship winners.” Since its launch in 2003, Action Teams of high school students and Major Leaguers have inspired more than 91,000 high school students to serve over 280,000 people in need. There are Action Teams in 30 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, and at various times during the school year the Action Team Captains participate in conference calls hosted by legendary broadcaster George Grande that feature a Major Leaguer and an “Action Team High School of the Month.” Action Team Captains receive free posters and T-shirts to help support their efforts. They are also invited to attend regional Action Team service projects featuring Major Leageurs and, in recognition of their efforts and accomplishments, they receive free tickets to Major League baseball games and certificates of achievement signed by Major Leaguers near the end of the school year. Action Team applications and additional information can be received by visiting www.ActionTeam.org or by sending a request to [email protected]. The Report committee for Colin Thomas Reynolds Certifies that this is the approved version of the following report: A Summer Wildfire: How the greatest debut in baseball history peaked and dwindled over the course of three months APPROVED BY SUPERVISING COMMITTEE: Co-Supervisor: ______________________________________ Tracy Dahlby Co-Supervisor: ______________________________________ Bill Minutaglio ______________________________________ Dave Sheinin A Summer Wildfire: How the greatest debut in baseball history peaked and dwindled over the course of three months by Colin Thomas Reynolds, B.A. Report Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts The University of Texas at Austin May, 2011 To my parents, Lyn & Terry, without whom, none of this would be possible. Thank you. A Summer Wildfire: How the greatest debut in baseball history peaked and dwindled over the course of three months by Colin Thomas Reynolds, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2011 SUPERVISORS: Tracy Dahlby & Bill Minutaglio The narrative itself is an ageless one, a fundamental Shakespearean tragedy in its progression. A young man is deemed invaluable and exalted by the public. The hero is cast into the spotlight and bestowed with insurmountable expectations. But the acclamations and pressures are burdensome and the invented savior fails to fulfill the prospects once imagined by the public. He is cast aside, disregarded as a symbol of failure or one deserving of pity. It’s the quintessential tragedy of a fallen hero. The protagonist of this report is Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who enjoyed a phenomenal rookie season before it ended abruptly due to a severe elbow injury.

  • Uehara Gives up Walk and Win to Padres
Sports FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2017 42 Uehara gives up walk and win to Padres CHICAGO: Chicago’s Japanese reliever Koji Uehara gave up an eighth-inning walk with bases loaded to help San Diego to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Cubs in Major League Baseball on Wednesday. After the Padres’ Erick Aybar hit a tying home run in the sixth inning, Luis Torrens walked with the bases loaded against Uehara, and San Diego stopped a three-game losing streak. Chicago rookie Ian Happ hit a two- run homer in the fourth against reliever Craig Stammen, going deep for the second straight game and third time in four. Uehara (2-4), the fifth of six Cubs relievers, replaced Pedro Strop starting the eighth and allowed singles to Wil Myers leading off and Cory Spangenberg with one out. Aybar was intentionally walked, loading the bases, Matt Szczur fouled out and Torrens took a 3-1 fastball that sailed inside. Phil Maton (1-0), the third of five Padres relievers, pitched a score- less seventh for his first major league win, and Brandon Maurer got two outs for his 13th save. MARLINS 2, NATIONALS 1 Max Scherzer’s bid for the third no-hitter of his big league career ended with one out in the eighth inning, and he then gave up two unearned runs as the Miami Marlins rallied to beat the Washington Nationals 2-1. After backup catcher AJ Ellis reached on an infield single for Miami’s first hit, an error by first baseman Adam Lind and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs.

Nationals' Craig Stammen Joins CAC Athletes Board In June, CAC announced the addition of the Washington Nationals' Craig Stammen to the organization's Athletes Board and speakers' bureau. In 2012, the right-handed relief pitcher had the best year of his four- year major-league career, going 6- 1, with an earned-run average of 2.34 for the National League Eastern Division champions. A native of North Star, Ohio, Craig played football, basketball, and baseball at Versailles High School and then continued his baseball Washington Nationals' pitcher Craig Stammen career at the University of Dayton. Well, it could be Fernando Tatis Jr., that is if San Diego pulls off a rumored trade with Seattle, which would net the Padres shortstop Jean Segura and starting pitcher Mike Leake for Wil Myers (and, you’d assume, more). If the Padres don’t complete a trade for an impact player at short, however, Tatis would remain at his home position and third would forge on as a black hole. Where else could the Padres turn for an answer? With Christian Villanueva sold to the Yomiuri Giants and ties cut with Cory Spangenberg, the in-house options are dwindling. Myers, who experimented at third late last season, is more likely to move back to the outfield if he sticks around. The recently acquired Greg Garcia or minor leaguer Ty France could fill in, but neither represent anything close to a permanent solution at the hot corner.
