Adam Chodzko a Film by David Bickerstaff, Supported by Art360 Foundation Watch @ Art360foundation.Org.Uk/Adamchodzko Art360 Foundation Press Release 01.10.2020 Adam Chodzko A film by David Bickerstaff, supported by Art360 Foundation Watch @ art360foundation.org.uk/adamchodzko “ My attention has always been monopolised by the current piece of artwork I’m making. The previous 29 years of practice would, both physically and in my memory, rapidly (and chaotically) recede into the distance. The Art360 Award allowed me the opportunity to bring everything I had made back into the present. It enabled me to be certain as to not just where the work was and how it was but exactly what it was – and now is – in terms of its individual and collective meanings. The archiving process showed me how my past work weaves into and interacts with my current practice. Rather than many hundreds of fragments floating in space, archiving brings all my work into a cohesive body that exists actively in the present. Creating a comprehensive archive of one’s art practice is not exactly a comfortable process but its psychological effect is profound. It serves as a highly productive, huge kick up the arse. Having the archive allows my attention to fully focus on the next piece of artwork, knowing that everything else is right behind it, feeding into it.” Adam Chodzko, 2019 Images upper right: Because…, installation using a Frank Lloyd Wright interior to make Kurt Schwitters’ “Merzbarn”. • Press Release Adam Chodzko, 2007 (Pdf)
For immediate release 13/11/ 07 THEN, an intriguing new Breaking Ground multi-part public artwork in various locations across Dublin by acclaimed British artist Adam Chodzko. Residents of Ballymun are perplexed this morning by a series of posters, which have mysteriously appeared overnight on hoarding along the Balbutcher Road, announcing a meeting to take place in the foyer of the Hagens Hotel, Måløy, Sogn og Fjordane, on the island of Vågsøy. Yet the photo on the poster seems to be a streetscape in Mexico City, taken in the early ‘70’s. Each afternoon, on the top floor of the recently restored Na Píobairí Uilleann /Uillean Pipers headquarters on Henrietta Street, a new sci-fi film, ‘Around’, documenting the paranormal and uncanny properties of an otherwise unremarkable boundary wall and its effects on an unsuspecting group of individuals, is showing. And visitors to Dublin City Gallery the Hugh Lane, can swap their shoes for someone else’s, which they’ll wear as they walk around the Gallery’s other exhibitions and permanent collection. Meanwhile, preliminary discussions with property developer Mick Wallace are being had, about the possibility of using the name Ballymun in a new development somewhere else in the city, some time in the future. “Adam Chodzko is recognised internationally for his multi-media work which triggers a shift in our perception of where we think we belong in the world. Fact and fiction are provocatively intermixed, and terms such as ‘community’ and ‘the public’ are deviated as we enter a surrealist world which plays on notions that we take for granted and assume that we understand!” says Aisling Prior, curator of Breaking Ground.

Peer Sessions is a London-based nomadic crit group, established in 2009 by artists Kate Pickering and Charlotte Warne Thomas. Peer Sessions’ monthly meetings provide a forum for artists to come together to discuss and receive feedback on recent work in relation to current concerns in contemporary art and culture. In addition, we organise projects: workshops, exhibitions and residencies focusing on direct artistic collaboration. For Future Refrains, Peer Sessions selected three member artists and invited each to choose a recent MA Fine Art graduate with whom to collaborate. Future Refrains will feature these three new commissions, alongside works from established artists Adam Chodzko and Lindsay Seers, who have each guest moderated recent Peer Sessions crit groups. As part of Future Refrains, a performance and screening day with live panel discussion, Collaboration in Question, on Saturday 23rd September will explore the processes and implications of collaborative practice for this project and in the wider world of contemporary art. Peer Sessions derives its name from the double meaning of the word peer: both in terms of examining something in depth and referring to a group of equals – artists who have recently completed postgraduate education.

Bad Behaviour from the Arts Council Collection A new National Touring Exhibition from the Hayward Gallery Bad Behaviour charts a subversive streak in contemporary art, focusing on a generation of artists who challenge conventions and overturn established principles and social codes. Featuring over 50 works from the Arts Council Collection, mostly recent acquisitions, this new National Touring Exhibition from the Hayward Gallery, South Bank Centre presents contemporary British sculpture, installation, photography and video from the 80s to now. It opens at Longside Gallery in November before touring extensively around the UK. Some artists take the term ‘bad behaviour’ literally. In Gilbert & George’s Gordon’s Makes Us Drunk a camera is directed on the artists as they become increasingly intoxicated, drinking glass after glass of neat gin. A giant plastic gnome is covered with cigarettes by Sarah Lucas for her sculpture Willy, while Ultralow sees Jim Lambie smoking his way through an packet of Silk Cut Ultralows, one after the other, in the dark. Several of the works challenge national institutions with anti-establishment sentiment. Although politically subversive in content they retain a tongue-in-cheek cynicism. Jonathan Parsons’s Achrome reduces the Union Flag to a representation of the original drained of all its colour while Jason Coburn makes a drawing on covertly obtained Ministry of Defence headed notepaper. Gregory Green reminds us of political unrest with his installation of an impromptu bomb-making factory. Other artists borrow the language of protest sloganeering to make works whose messages are de-politicised and obscured in their present context. The rhetoric of protest is the inspiration for Bob and Roberta Smith’s video Make Art not War, where the artist assumes the role of a crazed political orator.
