ASPAN represents over 15,000 members practicing in all phases of perianesthesia nursing practice. Education Wonk Takes on Nursing Competencies By Brian Harradine MSN, RN, CAPA, CNOR Improving the competency process is always on a unit educator’s mind. The process should be meaningful and not reduced to a checklist of required skill statements that does not really prove nursing competence in perianesthesia practice. To this end, the Association of Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) held a conference in July in New Orleans to present, among other topics, new ways to approach the competency development and validation. One idea, presented by the West Virginia University Hospital, was to determine if a skills check off and competency was really needed or if another method to present education was more desirable. This assessment tool looked at each specific unit competency to determine if the competency really required a return demonstration based on a hierarchy of risk and the ability of staff to access information about the skill before it is performd. Using this method, the hospital was able to reduce institution-wide competencies from 55 to 12. Another idea, presented by the Mayo Clinic, was to allow experienced nurses to test out of certain required classes during onboarding. The test out used essay questions graded against a rubric to determine if the experienced nurse had the required knowledge before enrolling in the onboarding class. The unit educator did the grading. If successful, the nurse would not have to take the class. Finally, unit educators were asked to remember that competence goes beyond the skills checklist. Nurses can also prove competence through case studies, providing in-services, or writing exemplars. The most meaningful competencies come from the perianesthesia bedside nurses themselves, since they do know best what makes one competent in the Photo courtesy of Kate Mooney-Nelson practice area. 3 Pulseline Meet PANAC 2017-2018 Board Candidates Anna Jackson BSN, RN, CAPA her because of her previous volunteer role as the Secretary for West Side Ambulance District.
