Annual Town Report Charles River Restoration Area at the Medfield State Hospital TOWN OF MEDFIELD Annual Town Report FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 2013 Medfield State Hospital Charles River Restoration The drawing on the cover, by Monique Allen of the Garden Continuum, represents the concept plan for the new restoration work that will take place along the Charles River at the former Medfield State Hospital. The restoration concept was developed during the environmental mediation process between the Town and the Commonwealth. The new remediation proposal protects Medfield’s water supply and human health and safety. It significantly enhances the property for public use and river access and implements the largest flood storage restoration project on the Charles River. THOMPSON When she moved here in 1964 Ann Thompson could not have imagined the extent of her involvement in the Town of Medfield. While attending to family, her husband Andy, her six children, and various and sundry dogs and cats she somehow found the time to get involved, starting out as a reporter, then as a library trustee. It escalated from there until there was hardly a night when Ann didn’t have a meeting or two to attend, scarcely a weekend without an Eagle Scout installation, a Gold Star awards ceremony, a sporting event or a high school musical or play. She seldom missed an opportunity to support her second family, Medfield’s young men and women. Soon she was appointed to the Warrant Committee gaining a knowledge of the Town’s finances, and then was elected to the Board of Selectmen, where she served with distinction for thirty years, participating in almost every major decision affecting the Town. Whether it was building the Mt Nebo water tower, renovating the town hall and the library, purchasing the post office land and the Dwight-Derby house, building a senior center, extending sewers throughout the Town, preserving open space, expanding educational and athletic facilities or determining the future of the Medfield State Hospital property. Ann was involved and influenced the outcome. She served on so many boards and committees it would be easier to list the ones she wasn’t on. Beyond her service to Town government, Ann Thompson was an active member of numerous civic groups, doing everything from knitting scarves and shawls for cancer victims, selling Christmas trees for the Lions Club, delivering flowers for the Home Committee, assisting MEMO with Medfield Day events and many, many other services. She particularly enjoyed working with her special friends at SNARC, although she was equally at home working with the young the old and everyone in between. Few in Town haven’t received a card, a note or a call from Ann, whether to congratulate, thank, encourage or sympathize with them. But she never forgot to play, whether it was bridge or reading, tennis or couples club, or simply enjoying a beer with family and friends, and she always threw herself into whatever she did and did it with gusto. One could go on at length about all Ann Thompson has done for the Town of Medfield and its residents, but suffice it to say that, at one time or another, she has been there for each and every one of us. With it came the recognition, but also the criticism, the thanks, but also the second guessing. Ann took it all in stride and did what she thought was best whether her decisions were popular or not. HP HE "Souvenir" of 1895 is the first to contain recoras of men who sat in the * State House Extension to make and unmake laws tor the state. It was a Legislature remarkable for containing the largest proportion of members from one political party ever known. The House contained 194 Republicans and 46 Democrats, while in the Senate there were only four Democrats to 36 Republicans. There were not enough even of the former to secure a roll call. And yet there was no unusual partisan legislation attempted. The majority always passes more or less legislation against the protest of the minority. The business of the session, although of greater volume than ever, was completed decently and in order and prorogation reached at the unusually early date of 1S95 was also remarkable for June 5, or the earliest since 1SS8. The session of the unusual number of deaths among its members. One Senator and two Representatives elect died without taking the oath of office, while two died after having served several weeks, and one on the very morning of the day the Legislature was prorogued. This "Souvenir" contains the portrait of every "Legislator" of the state, whether in Senate or House or Congress, as well as all members of the Executive Department.

    The CENTER at Medfield TOWN OF MEDFIELD Annual Town Report FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 2008 In January 2007 construction began on a new Adult Community Center with funding appropriated by Town Meeting. After a lengthy construction season the newly named CENTER at Medfield opened its doors with a grand opening celebration and dedication on January 6, 2008. The brand new 8,000 square foot facility is located at One Ice House Road off of West Street. The CENTER at Medfield is now the permanent home to the Council on Aging. In addition the CENTER provides municipal meeting space and is available for function rental. The fee for the rental helps to offset the operational cost of the building thereby reducing the burden on the taxpayer. The CENTER at Medfield is now the location for all local, state and national elections for the residents of Medfield. Cover Photograph by Seymour Levy. 358th Anniversary ANNUAL REPORT DEDICATION In an age when people change jobs at the drop of a hat, when everyone is from someplace else, going someplace else, it is good to reflect on a time when life was more stable, when people were born, lived and died in the same community; when friendships were lifelong and a job was not just a job, but a life-shaping opportunity. This year, George DeVenanzi, a mechanic with the Public Works Department, retired after a career with the Town of Medfield that spanned nearly seven decades. In 1940, as a fourteen year-old, he began working for the Cemetery Department, and several years later he transferred to the Highway Department, where he worked until his retirement.

    TOWN OF MEDFIELD Annual Town Report FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 2012 Robert McCarthy Memorial On September 17, 2011 a dedication ceremony and unveiling was held for the Robert McCarthy Memorial at the site of his old Blacksmith Shop on Janes Avenue. This historical marker commemorates not only Mr. McCarthy but memorializes the history of blacksmithing in Medfield. The monument was the idea of Mr. Myron McLane who had the privilege of being an apprentice under Mr. McCarthy and continues to operate a blacksmith shop in the area. The monument features a 225 pound anvil which was purchased by Mr. McCarthy in 1931 and remained in the blacksmith shop until it was purchased at auction by Mr. McLane in 1996.
