The article develops a life-grounded alternative critique of globalization that roots our ethical duties towards each other in consciousness of our shared needs and capabilities. -

Terhi Rantanen LSE Media Globalization So much has happened since the word globalization was first introduced in the early 1990s. Originally introduced as a concept of something positive that would transform many worlds into one – something, as Albrow put it, ‘by which the peoples of the world are incorporated into a single world society, global society’ (Albrow, 1990: 45), and even into a ‘global village’ (McLuhan (1964/1994), it is increasingly seen in negative terms. Soon after its introduction the very word it became a target of anti-globalization movements protesting against unforeseen consequences of injustices accompanying globalization around the world. Rarely has an academic concept so quickly reached the streets and so rapidly become a symbol of inequality. What anti-globalization demonstrators, who often identified themselves also as anti-capitalist and anti-neoliberalist, could not foresee was that right-wing populist parties would also start blaming globalization for the erosion of national economies, politics and culture. As the Financial Times wrote, Mr Trump’s sweeping rhetoric and compulsive tweeting resonated among millions of Americans who have felt marginalized by globalization. In the US, as told by Mr Trump, globalization and free trade have rewarded only a privileged few. There is a kernel of truth in Mr Trump’s generalizations, to which more centrist leaders have given too little notice. Inequality has risen and median incomes have stagnated or fallen in recent years, especially among those without a college degree (Donald Trump’s victory challenges the global liberal order, 2016). Today, at least in Europe and the United States, it often looks as if globalization has become Public Enemy Number One for both right- and left-wing movements and parties. -

One major concern facing Asian Americans today is the cultural pres- sure from home which often leads to mental health concerns. Many Asian American students acculturate to Western values in United States colleges, and in doing so, sacrifice part of their traditional iden- tities. As Asian American students acculturate to Western values, it becomes difficult for them to relate to their immigrant parents or first- generation Asian American parents. -

Kelly Ford Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Leslie Cecil (Anthropology, Geography, and Sociology) When visiting archaeological sites across Greece, one cannot help but marvel at the fantastic sites while simultaneously wondering why so many ancient Grecian treasures reside outside their country and thus out of context. This author struggled with this dichotomy during a visit to Greece in March 2019. Why were only half of the Parthenon Marbles displayed in Athens's new museum built to display all of the marbles? What about the gold death mask of King Agamemnon? Wouldn't the marble plaques plundered from the Treasury of Atreus' interior walls in Mycenae be better understood in context rather than in a faux setting at the British Museum among thousands of other 'uncontextual' artifacts? Doi:10.1093/ Half of the Parthenon Marbles were cut from the Parthenon and purchased by the British Museum from Lord Elgin. The other half reside in the Acropolis Museum with a view of the Parthenon. By reviewing the arguments presented for keeping these and many other artifacts outside of their original context by Great Britain, the 'collector's' mentality is found to persist to this day, displayed in blatant ethnocentrism. It is our duty as citizens of the world to preserve cultural heritage for future generations and share them in a manner accurate to their original context and culture, not reassigned to Greecehighdefinition.com the culture of the collector. -

During the s and s, the debate about media imperialism erupted in the field of communication studies. A good deal of critique and discussion followed during the next few decades, as academics and policy makers continued to debate the feasibility of the concept. Meanwhile, global media expanded and changed in various ways. Is media imperialism still a viable concept in an increasingly globalized, diverse media system? Or has a new form of cultural imperialism developed? is essay discusses how these concepts have been defined, how they have been challenged and redefined, and their current relevance. Background of the Cultural Imperialism Debate Of course, the story of cultural imperialism is not new and is an inevi- table component of imperialism more generally. Korean Wave as Cultural Imperialism A study of K-pop Reception in Vietnam Author: Duong Nguyen Hoai Phuong (s1623117) Supervisor: Dr. Namhee Han Leiden University MA Thesis Asian Studies (60 EC) 2 Introduction During my four years of college in Korea, I went back to my home country Vietnam a couple of times. Whenever I told people that I was studying in Korea, one of the most common reactions was: "Oh, so did you see any oppa?" It never took me more than two seconds to realize they were talking about K-pop idols. Interestingly, that question did not only come from underclassmen or children of my family's friends who aspire to follow my footsteps, I often got asked by many of the adults around me as well. Usually they would continue to ask why I chose to go to Korea, to which my older brother often jokingly answered: "Because she is a crazy K- pop fan." "Crazy" may not be the most equivalent English word, if anything it actually carries a much milder connotation. What my brother called me in Vietnamese was fan cuồng K-pop—a term no longer uncommon in Vietnamese colloquial language ever since the local media started to use it to label K-pop fans in Vietnam. Before having anything to do with K-pop, the word cuồng (/kʊəŋ/) in Vietnamese comes closest to describe an overly devout believer of a religion; thus "fanatical" seems to be a better translation. With such a negative connotation, I am certainly not happy with my brother's statement. -

Globalization: What Did We Miss? Paul Krugman March 2018 Concerns about possible adverse effects from globalization aren’t new. In particular, as U.S. income inequality began rising in the 1980s, many commentators were quick to link this new phenomenon to another new phenomenon: the rise of manufactured exports from a group of newly industrializing economies. Economists – trade economists, anyway – took these concerns seriously. After all, standard models of international trade do say that trade can have large effects on income distribution: the famous 1941 Stolper-Samuelson analysis of a two-good, two-factor economy showed how trading with a labor-abundant economy can reduce real wages, even if national income grows. There was every reason to believe that the same principle applied to the emergence of trade with low-wage economies exporting not raw materials but manufactured goods. And so during the 1990s a number of economists, myself included (Krugman 1995), tried to assess the role of Stolper-Samuelson-type effects in rising inequality. Inevitably given the standard framework, such analyses did in fact find some depressing effect of growing trade on the wages of less-educated workers in advanced countries. As a quantitative matter, however, they generally suggested that the effect was relatively modest, and not the central factor in the widening income gap. Meanwhile, the political salience of globalization seemed to decline as other issues came to the fore. So academic interest in the possible adverse effects of trade, while it never went away, waned. 1 In the past few years, however, worries about globalization have shot back to the top of the agenda, partly due to new research, partly due to the political shocks of Brexit and Trump. -

Cultural Marxism and Cultural Studies Douglas Kellner (http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/kellner/) Many different versions of cultural studies have emerged in the past decades. While during its dramatic period of global expansion in the 1980s and 1990s, cultural studies was often identified with the approach to culture and society developed by the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in Birmingham, England, their sociological, materialist, and political approaches to culture had predecessors in a number of currents of cultural Marxism. Many 20th century Marxian theorists ranging from Georg Lukacs, Antonio Gramsci, Ernst Bloch, Walter Benjamin, and T.W. Adorno to Fredric Jameson and Terry Eagleton employed the Marxian theory to analyze cultural forms in relation to their production, their imbrications with society and history, and their impact and influences on audiences and social life. Traditions of cultural Marxism are thus important to the trajectory of cultural studies and to understanding its various types and forms in the present age. The Rise of Cultural Marxism Marx and Engels rarely wrote in much detail on the cultural phenomena that they tended to mention in passing. Marx’s notebooks have some references to the novels of Eugene Sue and popular media, the English and foreign press, and in his 1857-1858 “outline of political economy,” he refers to Homer’s work as expressing the infancy of the human species, as if cultural texts were importantly related to social and historical development. The economic base of society for Marx and Engels consisted of the forces and relations of production in which culture and ideology are constructed to help secure the dominance of ruling social groups.
