In this very special one-night-only concert, Brian Stokes Mitchell will deliver an unforgettable performance to an audience of less than 100 people, outside under a tent at The Colonial Theatre on Labor Day Weekend, September 5 at 8pm. Dubbed “the last leading man” by The New York Times, Tony Award-winner Brian Stokes Mitchell has enjoyed a career that spans Broadway, television, film, and concert appearances with the country’s finest conductors and orchestras. He received Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards for his star turn in Kiss Me, Kate. He also gave Tony-nominated performances in Man of La Mancha, August Wilson’s King Hedley II, and Ragtime. Other notable Broadway shows include: Kiss of the Spider Woman, Jelly’s Last Jam, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and Shuffle Along. In 2016 he was awarded his second Tony Award, the prestigious Isabelle Stevenson Tony for his Charitable work with The Actors Fund. -

Lefferts University of Nebraska-Lincoln This document is one in a series---"Chronology and Itinerary of the Career of"---devoted to a small number of African American musicians active ca. 1900-1950. They are fallout from my work on a pair of essays, "US Army Black Regimental Bands and The Appointments of Their First Black Bandmasters" (2013) and "Black US Army Bands and Their Bandmasters in World War I" (2012/2016). In all cases I have put into some kind of order a number of biographical research notes, principally drawing upon newspaper and genealogy databases. None of them is any kind of finished, polished document; all represent work in progress, complete with missing data and the occasional typographical error. -

M.A. NEW YORK UNIVERSITY, 1957 THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE: A HANDBOOK Advisor: Professor Richard A. Long Dissertation dated July, 1987 The object of this study is to help instructors articulate and communicate the value of the arts created during the Harlem Renaissance. It focuses on earlier events such as W. E. B. Du Bois’ editorship of The Crisis and some follow-up of major discussions beyond the period. The handbook also investigates and compiles a large segment of scholarship devoted to the historical and cultural activities of the Harlem Renaissance (1910—1940). The study discusses the “New Negro” and the use of the term. The men who lived and wrote during the era identified themselves as intellectuals and called the rapid growth of literary talent the “Harlem Renaissance.” Alain Locke’s The New Negro (1925) and James Weldon Johnson’s Black Manhattan (1930) documented the activities of the intellectuals as they lived through the era and as they themselves were developing the history of Afro-American culture. Theatre, music and drama flourished, but in the fields of prose and poetry names such as Jean Toomer, Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Zora Neale Hurston typify the Harlem Renaissance movement. Starring NOBLE SISSLE • EUBIE BL AKE BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC December 15, 1967 8:30 p.m. PROGRAM NOTES Eubie Blake - Eubie Blake I a native of Baltimore I Md. I was christened James Hubert. However I at an early age he was affectionately called "Hubie". This eventually was short ened to "Eubie" by which he is now professionally known. At 17 he started playing the piano professionally. In 1915 he and Noble Sissie formed a partnership as lyricist and composer. They wrote the famous "I'm Just Wild About Harry" for the Broadway show "Shuffle Along". In the early 30's Mr. Blake collaborated with Andy Razaf and wrote the musical score for Lew Leslie's "Blackbirds". Out of this association came the still popular song "Memories of You". In the 40's Mr. Blake became musical conductor for the USO Hospital Unit. He retired in 1940. Mter retirement he returned to school and graduated at the age of 66 from New York University having completed a course "The Schillinger System of Composition." He has been honored by many organizations and the City of New York for more than fifty years of contributing to musical entertainment. On February 7 I 19 68 he will be eighty five years old. Noble Sissie - Noble Sissle was born in Indianapolis on July 10 I 1889. His mother was a schoolteacher - his father a Methodist minister. He graduated from Cleveland High School and attended Butler University until the death of his father at which time he left school to assist his mother with his sister 1 Ruth 1 and brother 1 Andrew. -

Unit #4: The Changing Face of America (1890 – 1920s) Part 3: The Harlem Renaissance African-Americans after the Civil War • Up until the Civil War, African Americans lived in the United States as slaves. • After the war and the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans had to shatter the stereotypes projected upon them by their slave ancestry. • They were seen as individuals who were incompetent and docile, and they were viewed as an inferior race, especially intellectually. • The nation gave African Americans this unpopular image, and unfortunately, many African Americans believed it. Rise of the “Black Movement” • Due to the systematic oppression that African Americans as a whole suffered from after the Civil War, many also suffered from self-hatred and low self- esteem. • They were so devalued that they began to internalize the stigma placed upon them by the broader European society. • It wasn't until the rise of the Black Movement, otherwise known as the Harlem Renaissance, did the African American begin to fully liberate himself from society's standards. • It was during this period of time in the 1920s that the "New Negro" emerged and racial identity became the popular topic of many African-American authors. Background of the Harlem Renaissance • African American artists, writers, musicians, and performers were all part of this great cultural movement called the Harlem Renaissance. • After World War I many African Americans migrated from the rural South to the urban North. This movement is called “The Great Migration.” • African Americans of all ages and walks of life moved to the thriving New York City neighborhood called Harlem. -
