Over $2.8 billion in federal funding for LA children is determined by Census counts, including SNAP, Head Start, Medicaid & IDEA. The 2010 census failed to count almost 1 million ? young children. An undercount can take away the voice of those most likely to be undercounted-young children, people of color and low-income individuals. Key Dates for CENSUS 2020 March 12 – 20: All U.S. Residents will begin receiving invitations by mail to complete the 2020 CENSUS Questionnaire online, by mail, or via phone. March 30 – April 1: The Census Bureau will count people experiencing homelessness by visiting shelters, soup kitchens, food vans and street camps. April 1: CENSUS DAY. Everyone should have received an invitation to participate and this date is considered the mark date for people living in a household. April: Census takers will visit college campuses, senior living centers, and others who live among large groups of people. Key Dates for CENSUS 2020 May - July: Census takers will visit homes of people who have not responded. December: The Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law. Each person who goes uncounted costs Louisiana $2,291 in federal funds. What Can You Do? • Ensure your organizations encourage people to complete the Census AND Count All Kids. #EveryBaby • Set up a computer at your facility for people to complete the Census and use volunteers to help people complete their Census information. • Reassure people that Census information cannot be shared with any other agency. • Talk to mixed families about counting everyone in the residence. • Visit with people who you know are shut-in or who don’t have internet and help them complete the Census either through a smart device or via phone. Our leaders made many difficult choices to ensure that students remained a priority. Higher education did not take a cut in funding and remained stable, and most importantly, the TOPS floor was reset and fully funded. This session has restored my hope and trust in our leaders. They have proven themselves as friends to students, and for that we are grateful. However, the last decade has not been so friendly to higher education. According to the State Higher Education Executive Officers’ annual report, Louisiana has led the country in percent reduction of public funding per FTE at -33.1%, from 2011-2016. Last year culminated with cuts to TOPS, to the alarm of students and the public. Years of budget cuts directly affected our institutional quality and transferred costs to students; this cut to TOPS was a direct cut to our students and was devastating for many. Our lawmakers went back on their promise to Louisiana’s best students to provide them with an invaluable postsecondary educational experience. In 2015, after eight years of constant cuts and budget reductions, LSU Student Government decided to launch this annual Higher Education Report Card to hold legislators accountable to us, the students. The mission of the Report Card remains clear: to hold our leaders accountable for higher education policy in the most objective way possible.

    Louisiana State University Student Government Dear LSU Students and Friends, Students in the state of Louisiana are more relevant than ever before. Before the release of the first Higher Education Report Card, students pursuing a degree were not valued in the state of Louisiana—proven by the 41% cut to higher education over the past 8 years. Contrary to popular belief, investment in higher education is the best societal investment that our state lawmakers can make. Because of our initial report card, leaders in the legislature are listening. The Higher Education Report Card is a huge step forward in ensuring that students are heard in the state of Louisiana. The requests are clear. We want stability in higher education and a sincere commitment to invest in the future of our students. We extend our sincerest gratitude to the governor and lawmakers for their work during the longest legislative session in the history of the state. Unfortunately, a session ending in a fully funded higher education and a partially funded TOPS is not ideal for Louisiana’s students. My hope is that the Higher Education Report Card can shed light onto the difficult votes that our lawmakers made during these sessions to ensure that our education would be fully funded. At the same time, I hope students will see that some of their own lawmakers are still not valuing our education as much as they can. We also hope that students will continue to be involved with the affairs of our state capitol by participating in marches and making calls to their legislators.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 1.13.20 CONTACT: Senate Communication Office PHONE: 225.342.6270 2020-2024 LA STATE SENATORS TAKE OATH OF OFFICE IN SPECIAL INAUGURAL CEREMONIES SENATORS CORTEZ AND MIZELL CHOSEN FOR TOP LEADERSHIP POSTS In special inaugural ceremonies in the Louisiana State Senate Chamber, members of the 2020-2024 State Senate took the oath of office and were officially seated as State Senators. Among the 39 members are 20 new State Senators, including nine who are beginning their first term in the Louisiana Legislature. After taking the oath of office from Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Bernette Johnson, the members chose their leadership. Senators unanimously elected District 23 State Senator Patrick “Page” Cortez (R- Lafayette) as Senate President. Senators Johns, Mills, and Boudreaux spoke in support of Senator Cortez’s election. Sen. Cortez, who is beginning his third term in the Louisiana Senate, previously served in the Louisiana House of Representatives for one term. He is known amongst his colleagues for his approachable nature and willingness to work across party divisions. He most recently served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Transportation, Highways & Public Works and as a member of the Senate Committees on Retirement and Commerce, Consumer Protection, and International Affairs. With his wife, Angela, and other family members by his side, Sen. Cortez took the oath of office from his friend and former senate colleague, Judge Jonathan “JP” Perry. The new Senate President, a businessman and former high school football coach and history teacher, sees this new legislative term as an opportunity to improve the state’s infrastructure, forge advancements in education, and make responsible reforms to the state’s tax structure and tort systems.
