The course presents the following topics: Defining Beethoven; Beethoven and Politics; Beethoven’s Life and Works; Beethoven and Disability; Beethoven and Race; and Beethoven and Film. • MUSC 3337, Writing about Music, spring 2019 Through intensive reading, listening to, and writing about music, this undergraduate-level course for majors offers students significant opportunity to develop their skills in writing, editing, research, and interview techniques as they apply to writing about music and the music industry. Students will gain familiarity with the history of writing about music, diverse publication venues, and key genres such as album reviews, artist interviews and profiles, trend or issue features, and cultural criticism. This a workshop- style course, with substantial class time devoted to discussion, writing exercises, and peer critiques. 2019 Invited Lecturer for MUSC 2107: Introduction to Opera, Northeastern University, College of Arts, Media, and Design, Department of Music, spring 2019. Instructor of Record: Kate Altizer. 2016–2017 Instructor of Record | Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music, Musicology Department • M510, Women and Music, spring 2017 This class is a graduate-level course for students in the Jacobs School of Music that examines women’s participation in music of the Western world through a series of case studies from various periods in history. The course introduces students to feminist methodologies and explores women as composers, performers, and patrons in addition to evaluating the representation of women in opera and other genres. It considers how music reflects, engages with, and questions ideas about gender and sexuality. Students are guided through the process of writing a research paper of 10–15 Doran - 2 pages. • M501, spring 2017, fall 2016, and summer 2016 This class is a graduate-level proseminar for students in the Jacobs School of Music. The class focuses on workshopping research, writing, and presentation skills as well as musical analysis.
