Jóhannesdóttir Kt.: 210496-2039 Leiðbeinandi: Kristín Ingvarsdóttir Maí 2021 1 Abstract This essay will explore the history of the portrayal of LGBT+ people in Japanese fiction, starting from The Tale of Genji, a novel from the early 11th century that is widely considered to be the first classic in history, and to the proper establishment of what is known as the BL (boys’ love) and yuri genres. BL, as the name suggests, is a genre that features the relationship between two male characters, usually in a romantic and/or sexual nature, while yuri is between two female characters. There will be a short examination of LGBT+ portrayal in historical literary works and art before moving onto a more detailed recounting of modern fiction and television. Some ancient literature will be reviewed, comparing real-life societal norms to their fictional counterparts. The focus will mainly be on the introduction of the BL genre, the historical evolution of it, the commercial start of it, the main components that make up the genre, and why it is as popular as it is, a well as an examination of the culture surrounding the fans of the genre.

This paper focuses on local publishers as “gatekeepers” in the introduction of foreign culture.     February 2020 The Winners of the 13th Japan International MANGA Award Enjoyed Some of Japan’s Attractions The four winners of the 13th Japan International MANGA Award came to Japan on a Japan Foundation program for 10 days from February 16th to February 25th. They visited a number of places related to manga and anime and Kyoto city, where they experienced some of Japan’s traditions such as Kimono wearing. The winners had a very enjoyable visit. An overview of the visit is presented below: February 17th (Mon) The winners visited Shogakukan, which produces and publishes manga and anime such as ‘Doraemon’ and ‘Detective Conan’. After a tour of the company by the editor, they had a discussion about manga production with the manga artist, Mr. MATSUMOTO Taiyo, who is the well-known author of ‘Hana Otoko’, Tekkonkinkreet’ and ‘Ping Pong’. February 18th (Tue) The 13th Japan International MANGA Award ceremony and reception were held at the Iikura Guest House. At the ceremony, the winners were each awarded a certificate and trophy. A reception followed the ceremony. At the reception the winners enjoyed spending time with Japanese manga artists and representatives from manga publishing companies. February 19th (Wed) The winners visited Shueisha in Jimbocho, where ‘Dragon Ball’ and ‘ONE PIECE’ are produced. They were given a tour of the company’s editorial department. Later, that afternoon, they visited Ota Memorial Museum of Art1 and enjoyed the exhibition ‘Kaburaki Kiyokata2 and Hirezaki Eiho3: Illustrations Bringing Color to Modern Literature.’ The exhibition is comprised of kuchi-e prints of beautiful women from the Meiji period.
