EDITION #20 – September 2008 SPECIAL "SHADOZ" ISSUE!! "Shadoz 2008" marked our 6th anniversary, as well as the 50th anniversary of Cliff and The Shadows. Yet another new venue, and, from all reports the best yet. On a sad note, we recently lost one of our Shadoz friends, Don Hill. Don played drums for Harry's Webb and The Vikings last year, and was one of the 'stalwarts' of Shadoz in recent times. R.I.P. Don. TONY KIEK (Keyboards) and GEORGE LEWIS (Guitar) were fresh from a tour of the UK, where they appeared at a number of Shadows clubs. They were gracious enough to help out by filling the 'dreaded' opening spot. Their set was a wonderful introduction to the day, and they featured some great sounds with WONDERFUL LAND / FANDANGO (with WALTZING MATILDA intro) / DANCES WITH WOLVES / THING-ME-JIG / RODRIGO'S CONCERTO / GOING HOME (THEME FROM 'LOCAL HERO') / THE SAVAGE / SPRING IS NEARLY HERE Whilst Tony and George travelled down from Sydney, no less a feat were the next band, who have travelled from overseas – Phillip Island! - ROB WATSON (Bass) was formerly with Melbourne group "The Avengers", TONY MERCER (Lead Guitar) also played with various Melbourne groups before "retiring" to the island and forming "SHAZAM", MIKE McCABE (Rhythm) worked in England in the 60's with "Hardtack", MARTY SAUNDERS (Drums) played with the popular showband "Out To Lunch" amongst others, and JEFF CULLEN (Lead vocals and rhythm guitar) sang with The Aztecs in Sydney before Billy Thorpe, then with The Rat Finks. A nice mix of Shads and non-Shads numbers included ADVENTURES IN PARADISE / MAN OF MYSTERY / ATLANTIS / THE CRUEL SEA / THE RISE AND FALL OF FLINGEL BUNT / GENIE WITH THE LIGHT BROWN LAMP / IT'S A MAN'S WORLD / THE SAVAGE / CINCINNATTI FIREBALL (voc) / LOVE POTION NO.9 (voc) / THE WANDERER (voc) / THE STRANGER / WALK DON'T RUN One of the joys of "Shadoz" is the ability to welcome newcomers to our shindig.

  • Chapter 2: Pop-Rock of the 50S and 60S
The Development of Rock & Roll by Dr. Daniel Jacobson © 2016 All Rights Reserved CHAPTER 2 POP-ROCK OF THE 50S AND 60S INTRODUCTION Softer “pop” music styles have played important roles in the development of rock, especially from c1953 to 1966 and in the early 70s. Various pop-related styles in the 50s and early 60s include: • Doo-Wop (1950s and early ‘60s; combined Pop, Gospel and soft R & B elements) • Teen Idol “Crooners” (late ‘50s/early ‘60s; Dick Clark early rock era; soft R & B) • Surf Music (late ‘50s/early ‘60s) • Brill Building/Aldon Music (‘60s pop; extension of “Tin Pan Alley” tradition) • Early Motown (early 1960s; “Soul-pop” music) I. THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD IN 50s ROCK During the years 1957 to 1961, Rock & Roll lost the impact of at least ten of its most prominent trendsetters. • March 1956: While on his way to perform for The Perry Como Show in New York City, Carl Perkins was involved in a car crash in which he suffered a fractured shoulder and skull. Perkins lost his chance for major fame, and was soon overshadowed by the rise of Elvis Presley. • October 1957: Little Richard renounced Rock and Roll for the ministry of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. • November 1957: Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13-year-old third cousin (while “forgetting” to divorce his first wife.) The scandal that followed destroyed his career. • March 1958: Elvis Presley was drafted into the army, serving in Germany until 1960. • February 1959: a small-plane crash near Fargo, North Dakota killed Buddy Holly, J.P.

  • Jackie Wilson: a Biography
Jackie Wilson: A Biography By Harvey Kubemik Jackie Wilson is one of the most important and influential recording artists of his generation. He was called “Mr. Excitement.” Jackie possessed dazzling stage moves and a soaring vocal range with a mesmerizing upper register few artists could do in a studio or on stage. Wilson’s music spanned a variety of genres from doo-wop and rhythm & blues to easy listening standards and rock ‘n’ roll. Jackie was an electrifying, charismatic showman. He was an agent of race music’s transition from the fifties that would lead to the sixties R&B and soul formats. “Jackie Wilson was my close friend and was one of the greatest entertainers ever. Hands down,” volunteered Marshall Thompson of The Chi-Lites. “He had the looks for the people and the girls screaming ‘til their heads fell off. The greatest dancer to ever hit a stage!” “Just listen to his voice. Who has those three and a half octaves and that incredible operatic instrument,” suggested music journalist, Kirk Silsbee. “And, who is gonna do on stage what Jackie did? 'Jackie Wilson was also employing things that seemed to defy human possibility in his stage moves. “Jackie was the first artist at the Apollo Theater to make audiences rash the stage,” stressed Bobby Schiffman, the former owner of the famed Harlem venue. Jackie Wilson became a mainstay of the R&B and pop charts from 1958 to 1970, where he amassed two dozen Top Forty singles. All of his classics were released on the landmark Brunswick Records label under the direction of future label president and record producer Nat Tarnopol, who initially served as Wilson’s manager and was a crucial force in shaping R&B music in that period.

The show drew guitar aficionados from across the country to view—and get their hands on—great new products offered by guitar dealers and manufacturers from across the country and around the world. Prominent among those offerings was the complete line of Bigsby True Vibratos. Legendary Bigsby tailpieces have been the choice of major guitar artists in every musical style for more than six decades. From early stars like Eddie Cochran, Duane Eddy, John Lennon, and Chet Atkins, to contemporary giants including Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, John McLaughlin, and Brian Setzer, they’ve all relied on Bigsby vibratos to help them create their signature sounds. Bigsby True Vibratos were the creation of innovator and inventor Paul Bigsby. The model he developed in the early 1940s set a standard that quickly made it the vibrato of choice for most guitar manufacturers the world over—and it remains so today. In recognition of this accomplishment, Paul Bigsby was inducted into Guitar Player magazine’s inaugural Hall of Fame this past November. Guitarists visiting the Bigsby booth at the Philadelphia show were pleased to be met by two special offers.
