CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION AND RESEARCH QUESTIONS 1.1 History of Aldi Initial Growth In 1946 a pair of brothers named Karl and Theo Albrecht founded the supermarket chain Aldi in Essen, Germany. The storefront, a local grocery store, had been in operation since 1913 when the Albrecht’s mother began the business (“Company Profile”, 2018).
