A New Fundamental Belief?

A new fundamental belief? by Nathan Brown he Adventist Church around the world is currently in a period of consultation regarding a Tproposed addition to the Statement of Fundamental Beliefs of Seventh-day Adventists. A draft of the new Fundamental Beliefs statement, titled “Growing in Christ,” was presented to the General Conference (GC) executive committee in April. If adopted, the new statement (see page 9 for full text) will be the first major amendment to the fundamental beliefs since they were adopted in their current form in 1980. After wide consultation, the proposed new fundamental will be voted upon at the General Conference session in St Louis (USA), June 29 to July 9, 2005. According to Dr Barry Oliver, general secretary for the South Pacific Division, re-examining the church’s fundamental beliefs from time to time is important, because they are focused on the Bible. “Our Statement of Fundamental Beliefs is an expression of our corporate understanding of some of the essential teachings of the Bible,” he explains. “As such it assists those not of our faith But to understand what we believe and what is important to us. It also serves to underpin a strong sense of unity.” But Dr Oliver is quick to add that the capacity to amend the Statement of Fundamental Beliefs Christians is also an important part of the beliefs themselves. -

UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS 112 INTRODUCTION The USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program – Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project functions to ensure uninterrupted supplies of health commodities in support of U.S. government (USG)-funded public health initiatives around the world. It is a USAID program implemented by Chemonics International. GHSC-PSM is working with USAID to explore the potential of incorporating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for moving health commodities through public health supply chains, with a goal of undertaking a pilot by the end of 2017. There are few practitioners using UAVs for cargo delivery in the development context. -

To Profit or Not to Profit? The Role of Greed Perceptions in Consumer Support for Social Ventures SAEROM LEE LISA E. BOLTON KAREN PAGE WINTERICH An increasing number of social ventures are for-profit companies (i.e., for- profit social ventures) that seek to advance a social cause while making a profit. In a series of seven studies, this research investigates consumer sup- port for organizations as a function of their social mission and profit orienta- tion. The impact of profit orientation on consumer support depends on the prominence of the organization’s social mission. For organizations with a prominent social mission, profits are interpreted as a signal of greed; absent a prominent social mission, a for-profit orientation can instead imply greater competence. As a result, consumer support of for-profit social ventures suffers in comparison to both nonprofits and traditional for-profits—a downside to the organizational benefits of for-profit social ventures identified in prior research. In addition, this research investigates organizational factors—including exces- sive organizational spending, profit perceptions, and operational efficiency cues—that alter greed perceptions and consequently support for for-profit so- cial ventures. Together, this research sheds light on consumer reaction to organizations that support social causes, with implications for the social ven- ture marketplace, including the nonprofit versus for-profit quandary faced by social entrepreneurs. Brown, Ph.D. Department of Education, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists ·t. 6840 Eastern Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20012 i/ .I Foreword In anticipation of the education centennial in 1972 and the publication of a Seventh-day Adventist chronology of education, the General Conference Department of Education started to make inquiries of the world field for historical facts and statistics regarding the various facets of the church program in education. The information started to come in about a year ago. Whlle some of the responses were quite detalled, there were others that were rather general and indefinite. There were gaps and omissions and in several instances conflicting statements on certain events. In view of the limited time and the apparent cessation of incoming materials from the field, a small committee was named with Doctor Walton J. Brown as chairman. It was this committee's responsibility to execute the project in spite of the lack of substantiation of certain information. We believe that this is the first project of its kind in the denomination's history. It is hoped that when the various educators and administrators re view the data about their own organizations, they will notify the Department of Education concerning any corrections and additions. They should please include supporting evidence from as many sources as possible. It is hoped that within the next five to ten years a revised edition may replace this first one. It would contain not only necessary changes, but also would be brought up to date. -

PERSONALIZE YOUR PARTICIPANT CENTER SET A GOAL: Determine how much money you can raise with the support of your family, friends and coworkers, and update your fundraising goal. Consider a goal of $100, $500, or even a stretch goal of $1000. CUSTOMIZE YOUR PERSONAL PAGE: Add a photo and story and share with your friends and family why you are raising money to end the global water crisis. 3. RECRUIT Ask your family, friends, and co-workers to walk with you. Let them know that registration is open and they can join your team. Send them a link from your Participant Center to make it easy! 4. FUNDRAISE Use the tools on the following pages to ask others for donations and support! And don’t forget to show your appreciation to your donors. A “thank you” phone call, email, or letter is always an appreciated gesture. Fighting the Global Water Crisis to Save Lives In Africa, women spend 200 million hours per day walking for water. 2.2 billion people around the world lack access to clean, safe water. And 4.2 billion don’t have adequate sanitation facilities. When water is safe and free from contamination, it plays a key role in health, agriculture, the environment, and even job creation.1 But unsafe water can be fatal. -
