ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® TEAM S ELECTED BY C O SIDA FOR RELEASE IMMEDIATELY June 9, 2009 JEFF LERG OF MICHIGAN STATE AND JOHN KEGELMAN OF JOHNS HOPKINS LEAD ESPN THE MAGAZINE'S ACADEMIC ALL AMERICA® AT-LARGE MEN’S TEAMS TOWSON, Md. – Senior goalkeeper Jeff Lerg of the Michigan State University ice hockey team and senior swimmer John Kegelman of Johns Hopkins University head the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Lerg and Kegelman were named as the Academic All-America® of the Year Award winners in the University and College Divisions, respectively. The Men’s At-Large program for the Academic All-America® includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis and water polo. A Finance major with a 3.79 G.P.A., Lerg finished the 2008-09 season ranked fourth nationally with 1,050 saves while averaging 32.5 saves per game, second in NCAA Division I. The Livonia, Mich. native also finished his career as the all-time saves leader (3,996) for both the Spartans and the CCHA. A repeat selection on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large University Division first team, he was the recipient of the Lowe’s Senior Class Award for ice hockey while earning the Ilitch Humanitarian Award from the CCHA. He was a finalist for the national Hockey Humanitarian Award and won the prestigious Gwendolyn Norrell Community Service and Leadership Award from MSU. A 2008 ACHA All-American, he was named as the USA Hockey College Player of the Year as a sophomore when he led the Spartans to the NCAA championship. A two-time All-CCHA selection, he was named to the CCHA All-Academic Team three times in his career. As a senior, he posted a 2.94 Goals Against Average with a .921 save percentage. A Yorktown, Va. native, Kegelman led Johns Hopkins to an 11th place finish at the NCAA Division III swimming & diving championship meet. A Mechanical Engineering major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., he has earned an NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship. A team captain for the Blue Jays the last two years, Kegelman is a five-time All-American. As a senior, he earned first team All-American honors in the 200-medley and 400-medley relays. A three-time ECAC champion, he led the Blue Jays to three top ten finishes at the NCAA Championships, including a national runner-up showing in 2008. Kegelman has interned at the NASA Langley Research Center while serving as a tutor, research and teaching assistant. Lerg is one of only two repeat selections on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At- Large University Division first team along with senior golfer Drew Allenspach of Indiana University. A trio of second team picks in 2008, senior lacrosse player Tim Balise of Massachusetts, senior gymnast Jake Bateman of Ohio State and senior ice hockey player Jordan Pearce of Notre Dame, moved up to the first team this year. Senior swimmer Kevin Greer of Alabama, senior Andrew Hickey of Nevada’s rifle team, senior ice hockey player Trevor Hyatt of Alaska-Fairbanks, senior wrestler Jarrod King of Edinboro, senior golfer Todd Obergoenner of Southern Illinois, senior swimmer Dan Ricketts of Brown, senior lacrosse player Scott Rosenshein of the U.S. Military Academy and junior fencer Jeff Spear of Columbia round out the first team along with senior skiers Juergen Uhl of Vermont and Raphael Wunderle of Alaska Anchorage. - more - - 2 - An Accounting and Finance major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Allenspach was a four-year starter for Indiana’s golf team. A native of Sugar Land, Tex., he compiled a 75.11 career scoring average in 134 rounds. A two- time Academic All-Big Ten selection who compiled 23 top-25 finishes in his career, he helped the Hoosiers earn a top 20 ranking for most of the season. A senior attackman for the Massachusetts lacrosse team, Balise is a Psychology major with a 4.00 G.P.A. The second-leading scorer for the Minutemen with 30 goals and 35 points, he helped UMass win the ECAC championship and earn a berth in the NCAA tournament. A team captain as a senior, Balise finished his career with 111 goals and 25 assists. As a senior, the Wilbrahim, Mass. native was named first team All-ECAC and was second in the ECAC in scoring. A native of Kingsport, Tenn., Bateman was a two-time All-American gymnast and a two-time first team All-Big Ten selection for Ohio State. A Biology major with a 3.78 G.P.A., he earned an NCAA post-graduate scholarship and will attend Dental School at the University of Memphis. Bateman was a four-time OSU Scholar Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. The starting goalkeeper for Notre Dame’s ice hockey team, Pearce is an Anthropology & Pre-Med major with a 3.81 G.P.A. As a senior, he led the Fighting Irish to the CCHA regular season and tournament championships while earning the CCHA Tournament Most Valuable Player Award. A finalist for CCHA Player of the Year, he had a 1.68 Goals Against Average and posted a record of 30-6-3. A native of Anchorage, Alaska, he led the nation in shutouts. Named as the CCHA Scholar Athlete of the Year, he was the team’s Most Valuable Player twice and a two-time recipient of the Rockne Scholar Athlete Award. One of the top swimmers in the freestyle events, Greer was a four-year performer for Alabama’s swimming and diving team. A Psychology major with a 4.00 G.P.A. and a minor in Mathematics, he helped the Crimson Tide finish 21st at the NCAA Championship Meet. The recipient of an NCAA post-graduate scholarship, the Sykacauga, Ala. native was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, Golden Key, NSCS, Phi Eta Sigma and Sigma Alpha Lambda Honor Societies. He was also named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team twice. A Biochemistry major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Hickey is a member of the rifle team at Nevada. As a senior, he earned All-American honors by finishing sixth in small-bore at the NCAA Championship. A four-year performer at Nevada, he holds three of Nevada’s top five shots in a season in small-bore. The recipient of an NCAA post-graduate scholarship, the Sutter, Cal. native led the Wolfpack to a seventh place finish at the NCAA Championship. A Civil Engineering major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Hyatt was a four-year letter winner for the Nanooks’ ice hockey team. Honored as a CCHA Scholar Athlete for the third consecutive season, the Anchorage, Alaska native was one of 19 finalists for the Hockey Humanitarian Award. He was also honored as the University of Alaska Fairbanks Civil Engineering Student of the Year. He is also a volunteer with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program while teaching skating lessons and refereeing youth hockey games. The NCAA Division I wrestling champion at 165 pounds, King is an Individualized Studies major with a 3.79 G.P.A. While competing at Edinboro, the Connellsville, Pa. native compiled a 32-5 record as a senior. Honored as the EWL and the PSAC Wrestler of the Year, he won the national title despite being seeded 12th in the weight class. In two seasons at Edinboro, he led the team to back-to-back EWL championships and compiled a 64-14 record. An Exercise Science major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Obergoenner was the top golfer for Southern Illinois as a senior. A third team University Division Academic All-America® At Large selection as a junior, he led the Salukis with a 74.5 stroke average. He earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors after finishing in a fourth place tie at the MVC Tournament. The Cape Girardeau, Mo. native had four rounds in the 60’s and placed in the top-5 three times with one tournament victory this season. A second team All-Ivy swimmer at Brown University, Ricketts broke school records in the 50-free, the 100-free, the 200-free and 100-fly. A Mathematics and Computer Science major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., he was honored as the team’s Most Valuable Performer twice. A native of Baltimore, Md., he was an - more - - 3 - Academic All-Ivy choice in 2009. He competed at the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials in the 100-free and 100-fly. Named as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Men’s Lacrosse twice, Rosenshein is a Chemical Engineering major with a 3.99 G.P.A. at the United States Military Academy. A native of Montclair, N.J., he was a three-year starter on defense for the Cadets who had 21 ground balls in 2009. A seven-time winner of the Superintendent’s Award for Excellence, he is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Epsilon. Rosenshein was also the recipient of the American Institute of Chemists Foundation Student Award. The lone junior on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large University Division first team, Spear led Columbia to a fourth place finish at the NCAA fencing championships in 2009. An Evolutionary Biology of the Human Species major with a 4.07 G.P.A., he was a second team All-American in sabre this season.
