JEFF LERG OF MICHIGAN STATE AND JOHN KEGELMAN OF JOHNS HOPKINS LEAD ESPN THE MAGAZINE'S ACADEMIC ALL AMERICA® AT-LARGE MEN’S TEAMS

TOWSON, Md. – Senior goalkeeper Jeff Lerg of the Michigan State University team and senior swimmer John Kegelman of Johns Hopkins University head the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Lerg and Kegelman were named as the Academic All-America® of the Year Award winners in the University and College Divisions, respectively. The Men’s At-Large program for the Academic All-America® includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis and water polo. A Finance major with a 3.79 G.P.A., Lerg finished the 2008-09 season ranked fourth nationally with 1,050 saves while averaging 32.5 saves per game, second in NCAA Division I. The Livonia, Mich. native also finished his career as the all-time saves leader (3,996) for both the Spartans and the CCHA. A repeat selection on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large University Division first team, he was the recipient of the Lowe’s Senior Class Award for ice hockey while earning the Ilitch Humanitarian Award from the CCHA. He was a finalist for the national Hockey Humanitarian Award and won the prestigious Gwendolyn Norrell Community Service and Leadership Award from MSU. A 2008 ACHA All-American, he was named as the USA Hockey College Player of the Year as a sophomore when he led the Spartans to the NCAA championship. A two-time All-CCHA selection, he was named to the CCHA All-Academic Team three times in his career. As a senior, he posted a 2.94 Goals Against Average with a .921 save percentage. A Yorktown, Va. native, Kegelman led Johns Hopkins to an 11th place finish at the NCAA Division III swimming & diving championship meet. A Mechanical Engineering major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., he has earned an NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship. A team captain for the Blue Jays the last two years, Kegelman is a five-time All-American. As a senior, he earned first team All-American honors in the 200-medley and 400-medley relays. A three-time ECAC champion, he led the Blue Jays to three top ten finishes at the NCAA Championships, including a national runner-up showing in 2008. Kegelman has interned at the NASA Langley Research Center while serving as a tutor, research and teaching assistant. Lerg is one of only two repeat selections on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At- Large University Division first team along with senior golfer Drew Allenspach of Indiana University. A trio of second team picks in 2008, senior lacrosse player Tim Balise of Massachusetts, senior gymnast Jake Bateman of Ohio State and senior ice hockey player of Notre Dame, moved up to the first team this year. Senior swimmer Kevin Greer of Alabama, senior Andrew Hickey of Nevada’s rifle team, senior ice hockey player Trevor Hyatt of Alaska-Fairbanks, senior wrestler Jarrod King of Edinboro, senior golfer Todd Obergoenner of Southern Illinois, senior swimmer Dan Ricketts of Brown, senior lacrosse player Scott Rosenshein of the U.S. Military Academy and junior fencer Jeff Spear of Columbia round out the first team along with senior skiers Juergen Uhl of Vermont and Raphael Wunderle of Alaska Anchorage. - more -

An Accounting and Finance major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Allenspach was a four-year starter for Indiana’s golf team. A native of Sugar Land, Tex., he compiled a 75.11 career scoring average in 134 rounds. A two- time Academic All-Big Ten selection who compiled 23 top-25 finishes in his career, he helped the Hoosiers earn a top 20 ranking for most of the season. A senior attackman for the Massachusetts lacrosse team, Balise is a Psychology major with a 4.00 G.P.A. The second-leading scorer for the Minutemen with 30 goals and 35 points, he helped UMass win the ECAC championship and earn a berth in the NCAA tournament. A team captain as a senior, Balise finished his career with 111 goals and 25 assists. As a senior, the Wilbrahim, Mass. native was named first team All-ECAC and was second in the ECAC in scoring. A native of Kingsport, Tenn., Bateman was a two-time All-American gymnast and a two-time first team All-Big Ten selection for Ohio State. A Biology major with a 3.78 G.P.A., he earned an NCAA post-graduate scholarship and will attend Dental School at the University of Memphis. Bateman was a four-time OSU Scholar Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. The starting goalkeeper for Notre Dame’s ice hockey team, Pearce is an Anthropology & Pre-Med major with a 3.81 G.P.A. As a senior, he led the Fighting Irish to the CCHA regular season and tournament championships while earning the CCHA Tournament Most Valuable Player Award. A finalist for CCHA Player of the Year, he had a 1.68 Goals Against Average and posted a record of 30-6-3. A native of Anchorage, Alaska, he led the nation in shutouts. Named as the CCHA Scholar Athlete of the Year, he was the team’s Most Valuable Player twice and a two-time recipient of the Rockne Scholar Athlete Award. One of the top swimmers in the freestyle events, Greer was a four-year performer for Alabama’s swimming and diving team. A Psychology major with a 4.00 G.P.A. and a minor in Mathematics, he helped the Crimson Tide finish 21st at the NCAA Championship Meet. The recipient of an NCAA post-graduate scholarship, the Sykacauga, Ala. native was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, Golden Key, NSCS, Phi Eta Sigma and Sigma Alpha Lambda Honor Societies. He was also named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team twice. A Biochemistry major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Hickey is a member of the rifle team at Nevada. As a senior, he earned All-American honors by finishing sixth in small-bore at the NCAA Championship. A four-year performer at Nevada, he holds three of Nevada’s top five shots in a season in small-bore. The recipient of an NCAA post-graduate scholarship, the Sutter, Cal. native led the Wolfpack to a seventh place finish at the NCAA Championship. A Civil Engineering major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Hyatt was a four-year letter winner for the Nanooks’ ice hockey team. Honored as a CCHA Scholar Athlete for the third consecutive season, the Anchorage, Alaska native was one of 19 finalists for the Hockey Humanitarian Award. He was also honored as the University of Alaska Fairbanks Civil Engineering Student of the Year. He is also a volunteer with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program while teaching skating lessons and refereeing youth hockey games. The NCAA Division I wrestling champion at 165 pounds, King is an Individualized Studies major with a 3.79 G.P.A. While competing at Edinboro, the Connellsville, Pa. native compiled a 32-5 record as a senior. Honored as the EWL and the PSAC Wrestler of the Year, he won the national title despite being seeded 12th in the weight class. In two seasons at Edinboro, he led the team to back-to-back EWL championships and compiled a 64-14 record. An Exercise Science major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Obergoenner was the top golfer for Southern Illinois as a senior. A third team University Division Academic All-America® At Large selection as a junior, he led the Salukis with a 74.5 stroke average. He earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors after finishing in a fourth place tie at the MVC Tournament. The Cape Girardeau, Mo. native had four rounds in the 60’s and placed in the top-5 three times with one tournament victory this season. A second team All-Ivy swimmer at Brown University, Ricketts broke school records in the 50-free, the 100-free, the 200-free and 100-fly. Academic All-Ivy choice in 2009. He competed at the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials in the 100-free and 100-fly. Named as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Men’s Lacrosse twice, Rosenshein is a Chemical Engineering major with a 3.99 G.P.A. at the United States Military Academy. A native of Montclair, N.J., he was a three-year starter on defense for the Cadets who had 21 ground balls in 2009. A seven-time winner of the Superintendent’s Award for Excellence, he is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Epsilon. Rosenshein was also the recipient of the American Institute of Chemists Foundation Student Award. The lone junior on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large University Division first team, Spear led Columbia to a fourth place finish at the NCAA fencing championships in 2009. An Evolutionary Biology of the Human Species major with a 4.07 G.P.A., he was a second team All-American in sabre this season. A first team All-Ivy League selection, he was the Lions’ Most Valuable Performer. As a sophomore, the Wynantskill, N.Y. native was the national champion in sabre and earned first team All- American honors. A two-time IFA gold medalist, he has been named Academic All-Ivy League twice. A Mechanical Engineering major with a 3.81 G.P.A., Uhl won the 2009 NCAA Skiing Championship in the 10K classic for Vermont. His national championship was the first in a Nordic event since 1998 for the Catamounts. A three-time All-American, the Muhlenbach, Germany native was named first team All-East four times. He finished his career with 10 first place finishes and 22 top-five performances. A native of Bubenbach, Germany, Wunderle was the top skier for the University of Alaska Anchorage this season. A Mechanical Engineering major with a 4.00 G.P.A., he had 11 top-10 finishes during the season and finished second in the classical race and third in the freestyle race at the 2009 NCAA championships. A three-time All-American, Wunderle also earned RMISA Nordic first team All-Conference honors three times. Of the 15 Scholar-Athletes named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large University Division first team, seven of them have perfect 4.0 G.P.A.’s while one has a 4.07 G.P.A. The 15 honorees have an average G.P.A. of 3.93.

On the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large College Division first team, there are no repeat first team selections. However, senior volleyball standout Michael Bertucci of Stevens Institute of Technology, senior tennis player Alex Boutin of Western New England and junior swimmer David Gatz of Ohio Wesleyan were named to the second team last year. Senior Gautum Samarth of the Trinity College tennis team was a third team pick in 2008. Senior tennis player Carlos Bes Comeras of Embry-Riddle, senior golfer Chase Carroll of Tusculum, senior fencer Igor Kopylov of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, senior swimmer David Pearson of Gustavus Adolphus, senior tennis standout James Steward of John Carroll, senior wrestler Kyle Vanderhyde of Olivet, senior wrestler Aaron Wernimont of Wartburg and senior wrestler Ben Youel of North Central College were also named to the first team. A pair of juniors, including swimmer Alex Beyer of Washington (Mo.) and wrestler Dan Laurent of Wisconsin-La Crosse, complete the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large College Division first team. A Chemical Biology major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Bertucci was instrumental in leading the Ducks to their fourth NECVA title and qualify for the Div. III Molten National Tournament. The Gibbsboro, N.J. native was named to the 2009 North East Collegiate Volleyball Association All-Academic Team. The valedictorian of his senior class at Stevens, he is a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon and Alpha Phi Omega fraternities and was involved in both the American Cultural Club and Student Athlete Advisory Committee. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of North Carolina. A native of Bristol, Conn., Boutin was the top tennis player at Western New England. Commonwealth Coast Conference All-Singles Team as an Honorable Mention choice. Named as the CCC’s Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, he compiled a 74-37 career record in singles and doubles play. A Pre-med and Biochemistry major with a 3.99 G.P.A., Gatz was an All-American swimmer who competed in the 100-breaststroke and the 200-breaststroke at the NCAA Division III championship meet for Ohio Wesleyan. A native of Delaware, Ohio, he earned honorable mention notice in both events at the 2008 NCAA Meet. A two-time North Coast Athletic Conference champion in both events, he holds the school record in each of the two breaststrokes. Gatz was also the recipient of OWU’s Presidential Award, which recognizes the University’s top athlete and person. This summer, Gatz plans to swim the English Channel to raise money for Doctors Without Borders. An Economics major with a 4.09 G.P.A., Samarth helped Western New England’s tennis team earn a top twenty national ranking in tennis. As a senior, he compiled a record of 12-4 at number two singles and posted an 18-3 doubles mark. A native of Pune, India, he was All-NESCAC first team in doubles as a junior and has been named to the conference’s All-Academic Team twice. Samarth was named as the College’s top Senior Athlete in 2009 and the top scholar athlete in 2008. A two-time All-American tennis player for Embry-Riddle, Bes Comeras was selected as the ITA Senior Player of the Year in 2009. A Computer Engineering major with a 3.85 G.P.A., he led the Eagles to an 18-3 record as a senior and a berth in the NAIA national semi-finals. A native of Zaragosa, Spain, he was a three-time all-conference performer who finished his career with a 60-25 singles record. Bes Comeras is a Champions of Character Scholarship recipient and is involved in an elementary school reading program while volunteering at a local nursing home. Honored as the 2009 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year, Carroll was a record-setting performer for the Tusculum golf team. A Business Administration major with a 3.88 G.P.A., he set a school record and a conference record this season with his 71.91 stroke average. Named as the SAC Scholar- Athlete for golf three times, he won the SAC individual as a senior, the second time in his career he won the championship. A three-time All-SAC player, the Knoxville, Tenn. native qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament and finished 24th in the Super Regional Meet. A Computer Science and Engineering major with a 4.0 G.P.A., Kopylov was an outstanding fencer during his career at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Roseland, N.J. native was a four-time NCAA qualifier, a four-time Northeast Fencing Conference sabre All-Star and a three-time New England champion in sabre. He is a two-time recipient of the Georges L. Cointe Award given by the IFA for excelling in high-level competition with excellence in sportsmanship. He also won the David A. Chanen Writing Award for best paper in computer system engineering and developed an interface for electronic medical records used by doctors at AthenaHealth. The valedictorian of his graduating class at Gustavus Adolphus, Pearson was an All-American swimmer for the Gusties. A Chemistry major with a 4.00 G.P.A., he helped the Gusties win Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships in 2006 and 2008. A member of the school record 800- free relay team, he earned his All-American honors on the relay teams. A seven-time All-MIAA selection, the Woodbury, Minn. native was also named as a member of the Academic All-Conference team three times. As a senior, he was the recipient of an NCAA post-graduate scholarship. A Biology major concentrating in Neuroscience with a 3.98 G.P.A., Steward was a four-year standout at number one singles for the John Carroll tennis team. Honored as the Ohio Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player as a senior, he posted a 15-5 record for the Blue Streaks. A four-time selection as first team All-OAC, the Monroe, Mich. native led John Carroll to the OAC title in 2006. Steward, who had 56 singles wins and 50 doubles victories in his career, was the 2009 recipient of the Herb Eisele Scholar Athlete Award as John Carroll’s Senior Athlete with the highest G.P.A. A four-year standout for the Olivet wrestling team, Vanderhyde is a Mathematics and Education major with a 3.85 G.P.A. A native of Sparta, Mich., he compiled a career record of 110-20. He was also named as Olivet’s Outstanding Senior Student Athlete. The NCAA Division III national wrestling champion at 157 pounds in 2009, Wernimont led Wartburg to its second straight national championship. A Biology major with a 3.55 G.P.A., Wernimont posted a 44-0 record as a senior and closed out his career by winning 80 consecutive decisions. A native of Pocahontas, Iowa, he also won the national title as a junior. A three-time national qualifier, he was also a three-time Iowa Conference champion and led the Knights to three conference championships. A Chemistry major with a 3.94 G.P.A., Youel was a two-time All-American wrestler at North Central College. As a senior, he posted a 41-4 record while competing at the 165-pound weight class. As a senior, he was the national runner-up in his weight class. A native of Crystal Lake, Ill., Youel led the Cardinals to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship. A two-time CCIW champion in his career, he was a four-time Academic All-CCIW pick. He finished his career with 139 wins, setting a school record. The NCAA Division III champion in the 400 Individual Medley, Beyer has earned 15 All-American honors in his three-year career at Washington (Mo.) University. A junior Biology major with a 3.78 G.P.A., Beyer led the Bears to a seventh place finish at the national championship meet. A native of Seattle, Wash., he broke the NCAA Division III record in the 400 I.M. with a time of 3:51.45. In addition, he was the NCAA runner-up in the 500-free and the 200-breaststroke, earning six All-American awards at the meet. A two-time All-University Athletic Association Academic honoree, he already owns nine school records. A Biochemistry major with a 3.92 G.P.A., Laurent won his second straight NCAA Division III wrestling championship at 285 pounds. The Mishicot, Wis. native led Wisconsin-Lacrosse to a third place finish at the national championship meet. A three-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, he posted a 39-5 record in 2009. The third wrestler in school history to win back-to-back national titles, he has compiled a three-year record of 91-24. The 15 members of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large College Division first team have a very impressive average G.P.A. of 3.92. Six of the first team selections have 4.00 G.P.A.’s. To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
