Such interaction not only promotes a universal perspective and intellectual growth, but it also contributes to the cultural and economic well-being of the university, the state and the nation. Education Abroad Mission The Office of International Programs is committed to fostering and assisting with the international educational experiences of KUMC students, faculty and staff. The goal of the Office of International Programs is to support and ensure the safety and success of all international travel experiences. International Travel/Education Abroad Policy Statement Because of the complexities of international travel and the need to be aware of Department of State Travel Warnings and other pertinent safety information, It is required that all student international travel be registered with and approved by the Office of international Programs. Owing to the desire to give logistical and safety support for all members of the KUMC community, it is requested that any faculty or staff member participating in international travel as a representative of KUMC, also consult with the Office of International Programs in advance of travel. Inbound Mission Statement The Office of International Programs strives to provide support and services to international students, scholars, and employees that will enable them lawfully to pursue their academic and professional goals within the University of Kansas Medical Center. SERVICES PROVIDED TO F-1 AND J-1 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS . Visa and status advising o Our advisors will work with you to ensure that you maintain legal immigration status in the United States. They can advise you on how to maintain a full course of study, obtain legal employment, travel and maintain status, and complete their program. OPT and CPT advising and assistance . Change of status application advising and assistance . Verification letters for Social Security Number and driver’s license attainment . Cultural and social programming events . Walk-in Hours: MONDAY-FRIDAY 10:00 AM- 3:30 PM Please note that an advisor may not always be available during walk-in hours and you may need to schedule an appointment. You can also email our advisors in advance to set up an appointment time. 5 | P a g e OIP PRIMARY POINT OF CONTACT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Alexandria Harkins International Advisor and Program Facilitator, ARO, DSO 913-588-1460 [email protected] Alexandria Harkins has been with the Office of International Program since June 2014. Alexandria is certified as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Office (ARO) which allows her access to the SEVIS system that tracks all internationals on F-1 and J-1 visas currently in the United States. Along with being a DSO and ARO, Alexandria is an active NAFSA member, which is an Association for International Educators. Alexandria has a solid background in F-1 and J-1 regulations resulting from completing numerous trainings offered through NAFSA, SEVP, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of State. Aside from being the primary advisor and contact for international students, Alexandria coordinates various processes and programs in the Office of International Programs such as the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, Short-Term Clinical Electives Program for International Medical Students, Observerships, Visitors, and Volunteers. Prior to joining KUMC, Alexandria’s experience was in the field of education administration first starting with the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s School of Medicine and then with the Master in Business Administration (MBA) Program at Park University. Alexandria is an alumni of Park University holding a B.A. in Psychology. While at Park University, Alexandria was an athlete and ran track as well as cross country. Alexandria was a four-time national qualifier in track and a three-time national qualifier in cross country. ARRIVING AT KUMC I-20/DS-2019 PROCESS Once you are accepted and admitted by the individual academic department, there will be a number of things that you will be required to do in order to obtain a KUMC I-20 or KUMC DS-2019 Document. Depending on whether you are transferring from another U.S. institution or coming from your home country, you will have slightly different requirements. The following items will be required of all incoming international students: Proof of funding, with supporting documents o Below reference chart for the 2017-2018 Cost of Attendance: Passport identification page o If you will have dependents (i.e. spouse and children) accompanying you, we will also need their passport identification page(s) A completed Student Health Form filled out by your healthcare provider and supporting documents for the following immunizations: o Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis (Tdap) o Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) o Influenza Vaccination (Flu Shot) o Hepatitis B Surface Antibody – Quantitative (Immunity) o Varicella (Chicken Pox) IgG Antibody (Immunity) *Quantiferon is required upon arrival at KUMC* 7 | P a g e F-1/J-1 VISA ATTAINMENT (IF OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES) Once you receive the KUMC issued I-20 or DS-2019 document, you will need to schedule a VISA interview at a U.S. Consulate that has jurisdiction over your permanent place of residence. Prior to the interview you will need to pay the SEVIS fee (more information on page 7). If visa issuance should be delayed, please notify OIP immediately. If your VISA is denied, you should ask the officer for the reason for denial. You should then contact our office for advice on re-applying for the visa. After obtaining your VISA, you may enter the United States 30 days prior to the start-date on your I-20 or DS-2019. When choosing your arrival date, please keep in mind to arrive in time of the OIP student orientation which is in addition to departmental or university wide orientation programs. Attendance for the OIP student orientation is mandatory. Also, allow time to find housing and to settle in Kansas City prior to starting your classes. F-1/J-1 TRANSFERS (IN THE UNITED STATES) If transferring from another U.S. university or institution to KUMC, you will need to work with the sponsoring school’s international services office so that your SEVIS record can be transferred to KUMC. Your current institution will need a copy of an acceptance letter from KUMC before transferring your record. Any student that is transferring in between U.S. institutions will not need to renew his or her VISA with the KUMC program information. Once you are issued the new KUMC I-20 or DS-2019, you are permitted to remain in the United States and start the new program as listed on the document regardless if the VISA in your passport is valid or not. If you decide to travel home on an expired VISA in between program sessions, you will need to renew your VISA using the KUMC issued I-20, endorsed with a travel signature from the Office of International Programs.     Recommended for grades 4-6 Vanishing Ice: Art as a Tool for Documenting Climate Change ELSA LENZ KOTHE, MARY JO MAUTE, and CHRIS BREWER Artist-Naturalists in Interdisciplinary Exploration The work of artists as naturalists, scientists, documentarians, and explorers has long been part of an interdisciplinary approach to scientific studies. As museum educators, we have gained inspiration from the exhibition Vanishing Ice: Alpine and Polar Landscapes in Art, 1775-2012 (Matilsky, 2013) and discovered how historical and contemporary artists document and communicate the stunning landscapes of alpine and polar regions, portraying dramatic alterations resulting from climate change. The event was a ceremony to transfer the entire collection of the Engineering Societies Library (ESL), located on five floors within the UET building , to the Linda Hall Library of Kansas City, Missouri. Several libraries were interested in the Engineering Societies Library. The United Engineering Trustees chose the Linda Hall Library in part because of its commitrnent to catalog the collection online and to make it internationally accessible through a state-of-the-art electronic system. The Linda Hall Library also provides a fast and efficient document delivery service, maintains and preserves the integrity of the collection, and ensures safe keeping of the ESL materials.

They will describe how and why they chose a particular Symposium Host: Web presentation option (e.g., ContentDM or ARCHON or custom-designed HTML, etc.) and the ben- Linda Hall Library .... 4 efits and problems encountered during implementation. Each speaker will showcase their digital collection Web site/pages and describe what selection criteria were used to decide on the presentation approach they chose. Questions addressed will include: • What purpose did going online satisfy? • Why was one choice selected instead of another? • What benefits nda problems did each selection present? • What were the costs? • How did they handle image and content copyright as well as fair use of their Web site? • What about security? • How satisfied is each institution with the outcomes? • What do these professionals recommend for archives, museums, and libraries embarking on the same process today?
