Page 2 EASTMINSTER TODAY Welcome Dear Eastminster Family, Writing these words only a few days after the wonderful celebration of Eastminster’s 70th Birthday, I am filled with gratitude to God for those men and women who “dug the wells from which we now drink,” and for all of you who are planting seeds for future generations by growing in our Lord’s grace and service. Please take a few minutes to both enjoy the 70th birthday high- lights you’ll find on these pages and also to watch the video that was shown during worship May 20. (Visit our website’s “Quick Links” to view.) Even as we look back with gratitude, I also hope you will notice, and join in, during these pleasant- ly active summer months. Our Middle Schoolers will take week-long trips to Chattanooga and to the Great Escape, while Senior High mission trips will head to Aiken (Salkehatchie) and Houston (flood relief). In addition to sending people out from Eastminster, we’ve also begun serving as a host site for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, which means we have the opportunity to extend hos- pitality to mission groups from Virginia, Atlanta, California and Michigan that will be serving in the Midlands. Want to jump in, help out and have some fun along the way? If so, consider VBS, CHAMPS camp, or the Drum and Drama camp (contact [email protected]). Choir members will attend the Worship & Music conference at Montreat; we’ll be hosting two basketball camps; Mark Durrett will be serving as a commissioner to the PCUSA General Assembly; and over 125 children will be at the Day School. Recognizing that people will be in and out of town, our ser- mons will come from either Psalms or Proverbs, and, even if you’re away from us on Sundays, you can participate via the “LIVE WORSHIP FEED” button on eastminsterpres.org. Sabbath rest and renewal are essential. Do listen for and heed God’s rhythms of worship, of service, and of rest, even during these summer months. In Christ,

EASTMINSTER TODAY Page 9 Eastminster Celebrates 70 Years &.... Service Commitment Sunday

On Sunday, May 20, Dr. Brad Smith reminded us of those Presbyterian pioneers and “Thanksgiving Churches,” who came 70 years before, forging our current pathways and corridors. Seeds were a common theme during worship, as we focused on service commitment for the coming year. We were warned about seeds prizes and a commemorative story to share. being left in pockets rather than planted, heard The parlor and Adult Reception Hall were mini beautful music accompanied by brass and string commemorative receptions for Eastminster’s 70th, instruments and an original arrangement of with slideshows of old photos that had been select- Holy, Holy, Holy. ed carefully by a task force of volunteers and staff Vintage cars decorated the lawn circa 1948-1956 members. next to banners announcing the celebration. Bright balloons and freshly baked cakes made lovely centerpieces. Memorabilia decorated the forefront, and as lunch wound down, an EPC Family Trivia Challenge began, which included questions like, “Who was our fi rst female deacon in 1975?” (Betty Barton), and “Who were our fi rst two female elders?” (Virginia Odom & Edith Strasburger). One question compared the 1983 church budget (35th Anniversary) to the aver- age of the amount given soley in benevolences for the past fi ve years...showing amazing growth. (Anne Sieling correctly answered: D. $535,755.00 = 1983 Budget vs. $713,450.00 = 5 yr. Average in Benevolent Gifts)

Servants young and old volunteer at the reception desks, both church of- fice and CLC. There are several teams that help maintain our buildings and grounds as well as a few volunteer photographers, editors, and let’s not forget the loyal Monday morning Count Team. They get here bright and early to ready Sunday’s tithes for deposit. Recently the “count” totalled one dollar over. One team member returned to recount to try and find where the discrepancy was....He even offered to keep the dollar to make it balance. The list goes on to our Kitchen Ministry Team who work hard to feed the masses, including WE@EPC dinners, PEP luncheons and congregation- al meals. You know who you are, and we appreciate your support and friendship. Pictured below are a few glimpses from our annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception.
