  • David Fathead Newman
David "Fathead" Newman David Newman was born in Corsicana, Texas on February 24, 1933. His family soon moved to Dallas, where they settled and David stayed through graduating Lincoln High School. After school, David found gigs in local bands. He received a scholarship to Jarvis Christian College and studied theology and music. After two years of college, David decided to go on the road full time with Buster Smith (Charlie Parker's mentor). The band played lots of one nighters and dance halls, touring Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and sometimes California. On one of those tours, David met Ray Charles. Ray was working as a sideman with another group on the night's roster. They immediately bonded, both musically and as friends. When Ray started his own band, he called on David to be part of his group. In 1954, David began a twelve year association with the Ray Charles Band. David began as the baritone player and soon became the star tenor soloist. In 1959, David recorded his first album as a leader, "Ray Charles Introduces David Newman: "FATHEAD" on Atlantic records. It included Newman's dramatic and now famous rendition of "Hard Times". He returned to Dallas for a short time and led his own bands. Then David Newman moved to New York City where his career took off in many directions. Newman recorded many albums for Atlantic records, as well as Warner Brothers and Prestige. During this time in NYC, David gigged with Lee Morgan, Kenny Drew Sr., Billy Higgins, Kenny Dorham and so many other of the great jazz musicians hanging out on the New York scene.

  • Lars Møller/Geri Allen/Buster Williams/Billy Hart JAZZPAR CONCERTS 2003
Lars Møller/Geri Allen/Buster Williams/Billy Hart JAZZPAR CONCERTS 2003 For the last ten years tenor saxophonist Lars Møller (born 1966) has been a key figure on the Danish jazz scene, with more varied musical activities than most. Not only is he an instrumentalist of international calibre, admired for his beautiful, masculine tone and highly developed technique and creativity. He has also cultivated his compositional talent with great success, both in small ensembles (in particular the Lars Møller Group), in big bands (e.g. the experimental band The Orchestra) and in cross-over projects such as Den 3. Vej (The Third Way), where he has written music for a symphony orchestra. And in addition he has made a name for himself as a member of leading Danish jazz orchestras such as The Danish Radio Big Band, Klüvers Big Band, The Sound of Choice Ensemble and Kasper Villaume Quartet. In 1989 Møller made his first recording for Stunt Records, ”Copenhagen Groove”, in the classic quartet format with sax, piano, bass and legendary Jimmy Cobb on drums. On the follow-up, ”Pyramid” (1989), Billy Hart sat in as rhythm master. These cd’s are marked by a great love of the American jazz tradition. Since then Møller has really revealed his great talent. With his regular band for almost ten years, Lars Møller Group, he has recorded a number of brilliant cd’s, inter alia ”Cross Current” (1995) and the Danish Grammy winner ”Kaleidoscope” (1998), where the American jazz inspiration merges beautifully with that from the Indian and Nordic music cultures.

  • “Head Hunters”—Herbie Hancock (1973) Added to the National Registry: 2007 Essay by Bob Gluck (Guest Post) *
“Head Hunters”—Herbie Hancock (1973) Added to the National Registry: 2007 Essay by Bob Gluck (guest post) * Original album Original label Herbie Hancock Herbie Hancock’s “Head Hunters” charted a new course for a musician who had come to see the entire world as his potential audience. In crafting this recording, Hancock renewed an historic idea while furthering something novel: jazz that audiences could dance to. Not since the big band era had jazz quite so successfully reached out a broad net, merging music for attentive listening with an approach that gave everybody something to hold onto. This had been the goal of late 1950’s and early 60’s “hard bop.” That music, made famous by drummer Art Blakey and pianist Horace Silver, injected widely beloved African American musical styles— gospel and the Blues—into modern jazz. By softening bebop’s blazing fast angularity, hard boppers crafted a more accessible, finger snapping, more populist style. In fact, this was the music Herbie Hancock first played as he began his professional career at the beginning of the 1960s with Donald Byrd’s band and on his own early recordings. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Hancock’s mentor, Miles Davis, began to update this concept of bridging popular Black music—R&B and funk--with jazz. Yet it was Hancock’s “Head Hunters” that most successfully reached the younger generation with this new synthesis. Hancock first gained the attention of a wider public when his 1962 hard bop tune “Watermelon Man” became, in the hands of Mongo Santamaria, a Latin dance craze.
