  • SNICK - Round 4
SNICK - Round 4 1. This object was directly inspired by a failed children's remote control shaped like a hammer. Dan Klitzner, the creator of this object, also designed the spherical Perplexus and intended for this object to make Homer Simpson's "D'oh" sound. A spin-off this object resembles a yo-yo and needs to be (*) "zinged." The original version of this object included "Vox" and "Beat" modes, the latter of which lacks verbal instructions. This object indicated a user's score by playing drum sounds to represent ones and crank sounds to represent tens. An "extreme" version of this object added options for spinning and flicking. For 10 points, name this toy that commands its user to take simple actions including "pull it" and "twist it." ANSWER: Bop-It <Nelson, Video Games> 2. Description acceptable. In one scene, this man is nearly crushed to death at the bottom of a well while the narrator muses on the words "if only." This man crafts a beautiful dollhouse that his spoiled granddaughter rejects, screaming, "I want the one that I saw on the television!" This man loses his faith in Rex, who was traumatically deafened in a flood and was voiced by (*) Hugo Weaving. Esmé is the wife of this man, whose shoe is urinated on at a county fair, prompting him to lower a guess by three ounces. This man sings "If I Had Words" to an animal that he also enters into a sheepherding contest. • Branding the Iconic Ideals of Vivienne Westwood, Barack Obama, and Pope Francis
PUNK, OBAMACARE, AND A JESUIT: BRANDING THE ICONIC IDEALS OF VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, BARACK OBAMA, AND POPE FRANCIS AIDAN MOIR A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION & CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2021 © Aidan Moir, 2021 Abstract Practices of branding, promotion, and persona have become dominant influences structuring identity formation in popular culture. Creating an iconic brand identity is now an essential practice required for politicians, celebrities, global leaders, and other public figures to establish their image within a competitive media landscape shaped by consumer society. This dissertation analyzes the construction and circulation of Vivienne Westwood, Barack Obama, and Pope Francis as iconic brand identities in contemporary media and consumer culture. The content analysis and close textual analysis of select media coverage and other relevant material on key moments, events, and cultural texts associated with each figure deconstructs the media representation of Westwood, Obama, and Pope Francis. The brand identities of Westwood, Pope Francis, and Obama ultimately exhibit a unique form of iconic symbolic power, and exploring the complex dynamics shaping their public image demonstrates how they have achieved and maintained positions of authority. Although Westwood, Obama, and Pope Francis initially were each positioned as outsiders to the institutions of fashion, politics, and religion that they now represent, the media played a key role in mainstreaming their image for public consumption. Their iconic brand identities symbolize the influence of consumption in shaping how issues of public good circulate within public discourse, particularly in regard to the economy, health care, social inequality, and the environment.

Introduction Welcome to K7’s Insight Report - Brand Funded Programming: Why It Matters Now Amidst a sea of depressing news about stalled TV productions, squeezed programming budgets and diminished ad revenues in 2020, there is one area that is perhaps set to benefit more than any other from the year’s upheavals - that of brand funded programming. A timely convergence of these financial pressures, combined with the diminishing impact of traditional advertising spots in a world of proliferating VOD platforms, has led both broadcasters and brands to put renewed effort into finding new ways to co-fund and co-develop original, entertaining programming between them. Different territories are at different stages on this journey, with varying regulatory and audience constraints leading to a highly complex global picture, but if you haven’t as yet taken the time to properly understand the opportunities, 2021 might be the time.
