As the last well documented and comprehensive test available on the internet has been a few years ago, I thought it would be a good idea to update. Beside comparing with CD-audio (which is often done to assess codec performance) and spitting out a grand total, this comparison also looks at extremes that occurred during the test and takes a look at 'high-resolution audio' and multichannel/surround audio. While the comparison was made to update the comparison-page on the FLAC website, it aims to be fair and unbiased. -

Cluster-Based Delta Compression of a Collection of Files Zan Ouyang Nasir Memon Torsten Suel Dimitre Trendafilov Department of Computer and Information Science Technical Report TR-CIS-2002-05 12/27/2002 Cluster-Based Delta Compression of a Collection of Files Zan Ouyang Nasir Memon Torsten Suel Dimitre Trendafilov CIS Department Polytechnic University Brooklyn, NY 11201 Abstract Delta compression techniques are commonly used to succinctly represent an updated ver- sion of a file with respect to an earlier one. In this paper, we study the use of delta compression in a somewhat different scenario, where we wish to compress a large collection of (more or less) related files by performing a sequence of pairwise delta compressions. The problem of finding an optimal delta encoding for a collection of files by taking pairwise deltas can be re- duced to the problem of computing a branching of maximum weight in a weighted directed graph, but this solution is inefficient and thus does not scale to larger file collections. This motivates us to propose a framework for cluster-based delta compression that uses text clus- tering techniques to prune the graph of possible pairwise delta encodings. To demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, we present experimental results on collections of web pages. Our experiments show that cluster-based delta compression of collections provides significant im- provements in compression ratio as compared to individually compressing each file or using tar+gzip, at a moderate cost in efficiency. A Practical Approach to Spatiotemporal Data Compres- sion Niall H. Robinson1, Rachel Prudden1 & Alberto Arribas1 1Informatics Lab, Met Office, Exeter, UK. Datasets representing the world around us are becoming ever more unwieldy as data vol- umes grow. This is largely due to increased measurement and modelling resolution, but the problem is often exacerbated when data are stored at spuriously high precisions. In an effort to facilitate analysis of these datasets, computationally intensive calculations are increasingly being performed on specialised remote servers before the reduced data are transferred to the consumer. Due to bandwidth limitations, this often means data are displayed as simple 2D data visualisations, such as scatter plots or images. We present here a novel way to efficiently encode and transmit 4D data fields on-demand so that they can be locally visualised and interrogated. This nascent “4D video” format allows us to more flexibly move the bound- ary between data server and consumer client. What is a Codec? Codec is a portmanteau of either "Compressor-Decompressor" or "Coder-Decoder," which describes a device or program capable of performing transformations on a data stream or signal. Codecs encode a stream or signal for transmission, storage or encryption and decode it for viewing or editing. Codecs are often used in videoconferencing and streaming media solutions. A video codec converts analog video signals from a video camera into digital signals for transmission. It then converts the digital signals back to analog for display. An audio codec converts analog audio signals from a microphone into digital signals for transmission. It then converts the digital signals back to analog for playing. The raw encoded form of audio and video data is often called essence, to distinguish it from the metadata information that together make up the information content of the stream and any "wrapper" data that is then added to aid access to or improve the robustness of the stream. Most codecs are lossy, in order to get a reasonably small file size. There are lossless codecs as well, but for most purposes the almost imperceptible increase in quality is not worth the considerable increase in data size. The main exception is if the data will undergo more processing in the future, in which case the repeated lossy encoding would damage the eventual quality too much. Many multimedia data streams need to contain both audio and video data, and often some form of metadata that permits synchronization of the audio and video. Each of these three streams may be handled by different programs, processes, or hardware; but for the multimedia data stream to be useful in stored or transmitted form, they must be encapsulated together in a container format. -

User Commands GZIP ( 1 ) NAME gzip, gunzip, gzcat – compress or expand files SYNOPSIS gzip [–acdfhlLnNrtvV19 ] [– S suffix] [ name ... ] gunzip [–acfhlLnNrtvV ] [– S suffix] [ name ... ] gzcat [–fhLV ] [ name ... ] DESCRIPTION Gzip reduces the size of the named files using Lempel-Ziv coding (LZ77). Whenever possible, each file is replaced by one with the extension .gz, while keeping the same ownership modes, access and modification times. (The default extension is – gz for VMS, z for MSDOS, OS/2 FAT, Windows NT FAT and Atari.) If no files are specified, or if a file name is "-", the standard input is compressed to the standard output. Gzip will only attempt to compress regular files. In particular, it will ignore symbolic links. If the compressed file name is too long for its file system, gzip truncates it. Gzip attempts to truncate only the parts of the file name longer than 3 characters. (A part is delimited by dots.) If the name con- sists of small parts only, the longest parts are truncated. For example, if file names are limited to 14 characters, gzip.msdos.exe is compressed to gzi.msd.exe.gz. Names are not truncated on systems which do not have a limit on file name length. By default, gzip keeps the original file name and timestamp in the compressed file. These are used when decompressing the file with the – N option. This is useful when the compressed file name was truncated or when the time stamp was not preserved after a file transfer. Why is the Specification and Best Practices document needed? At the request of their customers, content providers and post‐house have been creating mezzanine files unique to each of their retail partners. This causes unnecessary costs in the supply chain and constrains the flow of new content. There is a demand to make more content available for digital distribution more quickly. Sales are lost if content isn’t available to be merchandised. Today’s ecosystem is too manual. Standardization will facilitate automation, reducing costs and increasing speed. Quality control issues slow down today’s processes. Creating one standard mezzanine file instead of many files for the same content should reduce the quantity of errors. And, when an error does occur and is caught by a single customer, it can be corrected for all retailers/distributors. Cooke: Data compression using pre-generated dictionaries Data compression using pre-generated dictionaries ABSTRACT A file is compressed by replacing its characters by codes that are dependent on the statistics of the characters. The character-to-code table, known as the dictionary, is typically incorporated into the compressed file. Popular compression schemes reach theoretical compression limit only asymptotically. Small files or files without much intra-file redundancy, either compress poorly or not at all. This disclosure describes techniques that achieve superior compression, even for small files or files without much intra-file redundancy, by independently maintaining the dictionary at the transmitting and receiving ends of a file transmission, such that the dictionary does not need to be incorporated into the compressed file.
