Women Take the Lead: Female Directors Last month, we celebrated International Women’s Day; a day to celebrate the achievements of half the planet and point out the gender imbalances in many occupations. Never is the discrepancy more striking than in the director’s chair where women make up a measly 7% of all directors. Only one woman has won a Best Directing Oscar and only four have been nominated. But these sad statistics don’t reflect that women are creating some of the most exciting and innovative films around. Here’s a short list to get you started: Kathryn Bigelow - The only female director to win an Oscar, she has been steadfast in making the films she wants; serious movies for adults. Check out: Food for Fines The Hurt Locker (2008) – An incredibly intense film about soldiers assigned to a bomb To celebrate this week, all of the disposal unit in Baghdad.

  • Smoothing the Wrinkles Hollywood, “Successful Aging” and the New Visibility of Older Female Stars Josephine Dolan
Template: Royal A, Font: , Date: 07/09/2013; 3B2 version: 9.1.406/W Unicode (May 24 2007) (APS_OT) Dir: //integrafs1/kcg/2-Pagination/TandF/GEN_RAPS/ApplicationFiles/9780415527699.3d 31 Smoothing the wrinkles Hollywood, “successful aging” and the new visibility of older female stars Josephine Dolan For decades, feminist scholarship has consistently critiqued the patriarchal underpinnings of Hollywood’s relationship with women, in terms of both its industrial practices and its representational systems. During its pioneering era, Hollywood was dominated by women who occupied every aspect of the filmmaking process, both off and on screen; but the consolidation of the studio system in the 1920s and 1930s served to reduce the scope of opportunities for women working in off-screen roles. Off screen, a pattern of gendered employment was effectively established, one that continues to confine women to so-called “feminine” crafts such as scriptwriting and costume. Celebrated exceptions like Ida Lupino, Dorothy Arzner, Norah Ephron, Nancy Meyers, and Katherine Bigelow have found various ways to succeed as producers and directors in Hollywood’s continuing male-dominated culture. More typically, as recently as 2011, “women comprised only 18% of directors, executive producers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films” (Lauzen 2012: 1). At the same time, on-screen representations came to be increasingly predicated on a gendered star system that privileges hetero-masculine desires, and are dominated by historically specific discourses of idealized and fetishized feminine beauty that, in turn, severely limit the number and types of roles available to women. As far back as 1973 Molly Haskell observed that the elision of beauty and youth that underpins Hollywood casting impacted upon the professional longevity of female stars, who, at the first visible signs of aging, were deemed “too old or over-ripe for a part,” except as a marginalized mother or older sister.

  • Introduction Love Actually: Romantic Comedy Since the Aughts
Introduction Love Actually: Romantic Comedy since the Aughts Maria San Filippo “The romantic comedy is dead.” Or so pronounced critic Amy Nicholson in a 2014 article in L.A. Weekly, after noting that in the previous year not one romcom appeared among the top 100 films at the U.S. box office.1 The num- bers for 2013, as tallied by the revenue- tracking website Box Office Mojo, largely confirm Nicholson’s pronouncement; the only film among the top 100 that clearly belongs to the romcom category is Spike Jonze’s Her, which just snuck in at one-hundredth place. A half-decade later, Entertainment Weekly devoted its entire 2019 Valentine’s Day issue to celebrating bygone Hollywood romcoms, nostalgia being another sure sign that the genre has stalled. And yet, as Nicholson goes on to concede, romcom refuses to actually die; as relatively inexpensive films aimed primarily at adults— and women to boot— romcoms serve as reliably if not massively profitable counterprogramming to the animated family fare and superhero franchises that dominate the postmillennial multiplex and, since Nicholson’s writing, romcoms have gone on to become a staple of Netflix’s streaming platform. As Tamar Jeffers McDonald, author of this book’s foreword, persuasively claims in surveying the genre’s history from the 1930s– 40s screwball era to the “Neo- Traditionalism” that took hold in the late 1980s and remained ensconced in 2007, when her study concludes, romantic comedy may well be Hollywood’s most consistently popular genre.2 And bona fide blockbusters do occasionally emerge; Trainwreck topped the $100 million mark in 2015, and as recently as 2018 Crazy Rich Asians cracked the all- time top ten for 2 Maria San Filippo romantic comedy at the U.S.

  • Zain Effendi Composer Born in Colorado, Zain Effendi Began Life As a Passionate Composer of Symphonic Music at a Very Early Age
Zain Effendi Composer Born in Colorado, Zain Effendi began life as a passionate composer of symphonic music at a very early age. By the age of five, Zain had already formed deep bonds with the art of crafting sound into music with great emotional depth. A majority of his childhood years were spent at the piano and it was there where he began his evolution as a composer. It was in his teenage years however, that he became fascinated with the art of filmmaking. "There are few arts that have the facility to move and change humanity like film and I feel so privileged to be a part of this." His college years were spent studying at the finest music schools in the East Coast. "I was a small fish in a big sea full of genius musicians, I'm so thankful for that. It gave me the incentive to work harder at my craft than ever imaginable." While studying composition at The Boston Conservatory for Music under the highly acclaimed composer Andy Vores, Zain spent countless hours perfecting his skills with the orchestra. These years played a key role in the development of Zain's unique symphonic voice. It was during his last year while studying at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, where Zain had the rare opportunity to work alongside the Academy Award Winning composer Hans Zimmer (The Lion King.) "I packed a small bag and just hours after getting the phone call I was on the next plane to Los Angeles." Upon his arrival in Hollywood, Zain was immediately thrown into the biggest blockbusters of that summer.

  • 1 Femininity, Ageing and Performativity in the Work of Amy
1 Femininity, Ageing and Performativity in the Work of Amy Heckerling Frances Smith, University College London Abstract: This article concerns the complex negotiation of ageing and femininity in Amy Heckerling’s two most recent films: I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007) and Vamps (2012). These films are positioned as part of the contemporary postfeminist media culture, (Gill, 2007) noting the scrutiny received by the ageing female body, and its changing status under the prevailing cultural norms of femininity. However, Heckerling’s films also demonstrate a sense of play with these gender norms, and so calls to be read also in terms of Judith Butler’s theorisation of performativity (1990; 1993; 2004). This article contends that Heckerling’s representation of liminality and indeterminacy—in her teen movies, and later work alike—provides a way for women to carve out an autonomous identity that humorously demonstrates the absurdity of mediatised constructions of femininity. Her work, then, is more complex than has hitherto been acknowledged, and the piece concludes by calling for the director and screenwriter to be repositioned as a significant female voice in 21st century screen media. A pivotal scene occurs towards the middle of Amy Heckerling’s I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007) when television producer Rosie (Michelle Pfeiffer) enters the reception area of a TV studio where two other producers are discussing casting. As one (Peter Polycarpou) proposes a series of accomplished female actors, the other (Mackenzie Crook) dismisses them variously as “hags”, or, in the case of actor Emma Thompson, “Brit hag”. Even those women who have taken steps to stall the ageing process do not escape this scrutiny.
