4 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

PRESIDENT’S MANAGER’S REPORT First of all I would like to congratulate this year’s premier in the BDAFL- Newcastle City (Premier Division), (First Division) and Newcastle City (Second Division). This season we had five new Board members, Simon Smyth, Graham Edgley, Roger Price, Wal Bembic and myself. They joined Phil Lewis to make up the BDAFL Board of Management. I would like to thank them all for their contributions this year. They have been a great support to me in my first year as president of the BDAFL and I thank them for their efforts. Some highlights in the season included:  Garry Burkinshaw returned as Football Operations Manager, a position he previously held in 2005 & 2006.  Prme7, StarFM 104.5 Central Coast and Cougar Sportswear continued their partnership with the league whilst OPEC Systems came on board as match day sponsor for the NEAFL match  On-field we had a change to the structure with the abolition of the Under 18’s competition and the Greater Sydney Junior competitions in both Newcastle and Central Coast changing Under 16’s to Under 17’s.  Singleton returning to the Premier Division competition.  Nelson Bay, Warners Bay and Terrigal Avoca were able to field an extra team.  Overall 847 players played across 3 competitions, 10 clubs and 22 teams  Christine Burrows took on the role as BDAFL Umpires Coach and made in immediate impact  46 umpires officiated across all three disciplines  44 Club Field Umpires officiated in 1st & 2nd Division matches  The BDAFL Representative side led by Chris Bishop and Courtney Knight continued the leagues impressive Representative record by defeating Farrer FL in .  The BDAFL hosted a North Eastern AFL (NEAFL) match between Reserves and Eastlake at N0 1 Sportsground. The match was well attended with eleven (11) BDAFL players getting the opportunity to play for the Sydney Swans Reserves  Isaac Heeney representing AFL NSW/ACT Rams with distinction in the National Under 18’s Championship. He was subsequently selected to receive a Level 2 AIS-AFL Academy Scholarship  On a disappointing note, Wyong Lakes suffered the heartache of their clubhouse burning down. This tragedy only drew the league closer together with all clubs getting on the front foot with offers of support and assistance.  The media coverage through all mediums has increased significantly this year.

Our presentation evening held at Belmont 16ft Sailing club was another highlight of the year. Clubs should be commended on their support of the event and Steve Allen was, as always, a great host. Equally, the Grand Final Breakfast hosted by Newcastle City was a very well run event and I thank Mark Hope and his team for their efforts. By now some clubs will have held their Annual General Meetings and I thank those officials who have contributed in 2013 to the running of their clubs, and in turn fostering the code in our region. To those who are taking positions on club committees for 2014, some for the first time, I welcome you to the football family.

Michael Gray President

FOOTBALL OPERATIONS MANAGER’S REPORT

2013 season has come and gone and it is now time to review the year and prepare for 2014.

I congratulate the 2013 Premiers, Newcastle City in the Black Diamond Cup and 2nd Division and Nelson Bay, who completed the season undefeated in 1st Division.

Congratulations also to Nelson Bay on winning the Club Championship award.

At the end of the 2012 season, Adam Lowe stood down as Football Operations Manager and I took over the role in December.

I previously held the role in 2005 & 2006 before moving to run the AFL Sydney competitions for six years.

With no Football Operations Manager for two months, and a significant amount of work required to reconcile the financial records the Annual General Meeting was unable to be held in November as is normally the case. The meeting was eventually held in March.

A big thank you to former President Scott Harrington and our Auditors, Lawrence Rundle Rapson Pty Ltd in reconciling the financial records.

Prior to this meeting, Harrington and all the existing Board Members, apart from Phil Lewis indicated that they would either not seeking re-election to the Board or would be resigning from the Board. This subsequently meant virtually a new Board would be required.

At the Annual General Meeting, Michael Gray, Simon Smyth and Graeme Edgley were appointed to the Board, with Gray also taking on the role of President. In May, Wal Bembic and Roger Price joined the Board whilst one position remained vacant along with the role of Vice President.

A Delegates meeting was held following the AGM, with a further meeting held in July. In addition to this an Operations meeting was held prior to the commencement of the season.

2012 saw the league make a significant change to the competition introducing a Divisionalised structure and in 2013 an equally important decision was made to disband the Under 18’s competition, with the Greater Sydney Junior competitions in both Central Coast and Newcastle moving to Under 17’s as opposed to Under 16’s.

This decision was made following the reduction in teams in the Under 18’s competition in 2012 and the belief that players eligible for Under 18’s would be able to be accommodated under the Divisionalised structure.

With the disruption at the end of the season the normal planning day and end of season reviews were not held.

Twenty three nominations were received from the ten clubs with all nominations being accepted, except the third side from Lake Macquarie with the Board not satisfied that the club had sufficient players and resources to be able to fulfil this commitment.

In a positive sign Warners Bay and Terrigal Avoca joined Newcastle City in fielding three teams, whilst Nelson Bay and Maitland each fielded two teams along with Cardiff, Killarney Vale, Lake Macquarie and Singleton, with Wyong Lakes the only team with one team.

Following their undefeated Premiership win in 1st Division in 2012, Singleton were promoted into the Black Diamond Cup competition making it a seven team competition, eight teams were accepted in 1st Division and seven teams in 2nd Division.

6 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

The season ran for twenty two weeks, with nineteen weeks for home and away matches and three weeks for finals. All teams were scheduled to play sixteen matches and have three byes.

In all competitions each team played each other twice, with an additional four matches in the Black Diamond Cup and 2nd Division and two matches in 1st Division. In the Black Diamond Cup the additional matches were seeded based on the final positions from the 2012 season.

The Divisionalised structure always makes fixturing a challenge especially in relation to having all teams playing together at the same venue, in particular at home. In the end 76% of the time clubs had at least two teams at the same venue whilst all three teams were at the same venue on 56% of the time. The clubs should be commended for their ability to overcome the difficulties associated with their teams being at different venues on the same day.

Wet weather only had a moderate impact on the season with only a few matches having to be transferred to alternate venues, or transferred to the designated wet weather weekend. All scheduled matches were able to be played except for a Black Diamond Cup match between Terrigal Avoca and Warners Bay which had to be cancelled due to continuous rain making the ground unplayable on the day. With no wet weather rounds for the Black Diamond Cup competition the match was unable to be rescheduled.

A major improvement in the Black Diamond Cup competition is the standard of the grounds and the ability to withstand significant rainfall. This along with the support of the clubs and councils enables matches to proceed when in the past they would need to be postponed or cancelled.

In another significant move the BDAFL took over the winter seasonal tenancy of Newcastle No 1 Sportsground, the tenancy was previously held by Newcastle City. This decision was made following Cardiff being without a home ground due to their tenancy of Bill Elliott Oval not being renewed. Cardiff were able to play six of their home matches at No 1 Sportsground, with one match at both Tulkaba Park and Hillsborough Oval. The benefit to Newcastle City was a cheaper hire fee. Overall this arrangement worked quite well and will hopefully, with the support of council, be continued in the future.

In spite of this, a major priority for both the AFL and Cardiff will be to establish a permanent home ground and discussions have been commenced with Lake Macquarie Council with the possibility of a home ground being established in time for the 2015 season.

AFL NSW/ACT also announced during the season that positive discussions had taken place with Newcastle Council and local Government officials regarding redeveloping No 1 Sportsground. If this comes to fruition it will be fantastic for football in the region.

A positive note for the year was that the number of forfeits have reduced significantly although the lowlight occurred on July 7 when Singleton forfeited their Black Diamond Cup match against Terrigal Avoca. For a club to be unable to field a side for a Black Diamond Cup competition is extremely disappointing. Apart from this forfeit there were three forfeits in 2nd Division with no club forfeiting on more than one occasion.

A highlight for the year was Newcastle City AFC celebrating their 130th anniversary in June. The club took on arch rivals Cardiff at No 1 Sportsground for the Richter- Marlborough Trophy, which they won, and then a successful anniversary dinner was held that night. To reach 130 years is a magnificent achievement and makes the club one of the oldest AFL clubs in .

Killarney Vale also celebrated their 35th anniversary in August, when they also took on Cardiff at Adelaide St Oval. The club wore their historic jumper and assumed their ‘Bunyip’ moniker for the day.

In June, Newcastle City became the first Black Diamond AFL club to undertake the AFL's Respect and Responsibility Program.

7 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

The program delivers important messages around alcohol fuelled violence, illicit drugs as well as respect and responsibility towards women and celebrating the diversity of all people involved in the AFL

A lowlight for the year was the fire which destroyed the Wyong Lakes Clubhouse. The fire occurred the day before the club’s annual Pink Fundraising day.

Such is the fortitude of the club, the match against Cardiff, and the charity day still went ahead at Don Small Oval with a large crowd in attendance. The day was also a celebration for club legend Billy Denniss who played his 600th game for the club.

The club lost a large amount of equipment and all their memorabilia in the fire, but as is the nature of the clubs in the BDAFL, they were quickly inundating Wyong Lakes with offers of assistance. The BDAFL and AFL NSW/ACT donated a signed 2012 Swans Premiership jumper for them to raffle, which they did at the NEAFL match held in Newcastle in July.

For the second time the BDAFL hosted a North Eastern AFL (NEAFL) match between Sydney Swans Reserves and Canberra club Eastlake at No 1 Sportsground. A condition of the BDAFL hosting the match was that they would cover the travel and accommodation costs of both teams. Through the support of Newcastle Council and matchday sponsor OPEC Systems, the BDAFL were able to cover these costs, and also allow free entry for the match. The match was a success with a good crowd in attendance.

Another benefit to the BDAFL was the fact that thirteen players from the local competition were called into the Swans team for the match. The players got to stay with the side the night before the match and got to experience firsthand how elite players prepare. All players performed well and contributed to the Swans winning the match.

Following this match Jacob Dawes, Blake Erickson and Matthew Spinks were given the opportunity to play additional NEAFL matches for the Swans, with Dawes and Mitchell Crawford playing in the NEAFL Grand Final, the week after winning a Premiership with Newcastle City.

The opportunity for the young players in the BDAFL to get the opportunity to play for the Sydney Swans Reserves is a fantastic initiative, and one we will be looking to continue in coming years.

A number of BDAFL youngsters also made an impact away from the BDAFL in 2013.

Isaac Heeney and Thomas Head represented the AFL NSW/ACT Rams at the AFL U18’s National Championships. Despite being one of the younger players Heeney excelled at the championships and was rewarded with selection into the AFL AIS Academy for the second consecutive year.

Promising umpire Lachlan Head, not only made his Black Diamond Cup debut in 2013, and then subsequently umpire the Grand Final, but he also was named as the All-Australian umpire following the All Schools Carnival held in Darwin. He will now tour South Africa with the AFL All-Australian Under 15’s side.

Warners Bay youngster, Matthew Spinks was a member of Rio Tinto Footy Means Business Program which is an innovative leadership development program run jointly by Rio Tinto and the AFL that links young indigenous men with employment and education opportunities.

Once selected the program gives those young men a chance to gain exposure to elite AFL training, and corporate networking opportunities to strengthen their leadership and teamwork skills.

Matthew had to attend two camps throughout the year (in Perth & Sydney) whilst the highlight was playing at the MCG as part of the curtain raiser to the AFL Dream time match between Richmond & Essendon.

Spinks also represented the BDAFL and played for the Sydney Swans Reserves in Newcastle as well as the Swans NEAFL Eastern Conference Semi Final and Grand Final wins.

The leagues Gala off-field event of the year, the Elliott Davey Medal Presentation night was this year moved to Belmont 16 Footers Sailing Club. The event was attended by approximately 200 people who had an enjoyable night. Congratulations on James Webster on winning the Elliott Davey Medal.

Each team were allocated eight tickets as part of their affiliation costs with additional tickets able to be purchased for $50 each. Dinner and pre-dinner drinks were included in the ticket price. Well renowned local media personality, Steve Allan was the MC for the night and he once again did a magnificent job.

Coaching Accreditation was again compulsory for all appointed coaches. A course was held in May with 62 coaches in attendance.

Insurance for clubs, players and public liability was again taken out through JLT Sport as part of the National AFL Program. AFL NSW/ACT paid the premium on our league’s behalf then invoiced the BDAFL who in turn invoiced the clubs. The NCCUA was also covered under this policy with additional cover taken out through the NSW (Government’s) Sporting Injuries Insurance Scheme.

The league continued to use the Sporting Pulse Footyweb System which enabled player registrations and match information to be input directly and edited by club personnel. An improvement in 2013 was the introduction of live scoring which enabled clubs to input scores as they happened during the game, and they would immediately appear on the website.

Home clubs were also required to update match details by 7:00pm on the night of the game/s and SMS the results to me within 10 minutes of the finish of the senior game. I commend those who undertook this duty for their dedication in the way they got the job done.

The BDAFL continued with the Yellow & Red Card (Send-Off) System as well the Prescribed Penalty option for reported players.

When a reportable incident was encountered the field umpire had the authority to send the player from the ground using a yellow card for minor offences for 15 minutes of elapsed playing time and a red card for more serious offences which encompassed the remainder of the match. In both cases the player were permitted to be replaced, albeit after fifteen minutes for those who receive a red card.

A change in the reporting procedure this year was that the umpires were required to complete the report form and offence grade template on-line. This seemed to work well with the umpires and clubs not required to wait around after the match to complete the paperwork.

Once the forms were completed on line the Football Operations Manager when then send a copy of the report form, offence grade template as well as the Prescribed Penalty offered to the clubs. The clubs had until 3pm on Tuesday to advise if they would accept the prescribed penalty or wish to have the matter heard by the tribunal the following evening.

This year of the 24 reports made, 19 opted to take the Prescribed Penalty.

David Reed, Anthony Monk, Paul Deaves and Brett Roberts filled the role of the tribunal members in 2013, with Reed and Monk both acting as Chairman. I would like to thank all the members for their assistance throughout the year.

A pleasing result this year was the fact that the BDAFL Investigative Officer was not required this year. This is a result of improved behaviour across the league, which is the result of good leadership at all clubs.

This year the Newcastle Central Coast Umpires Association (NCCUA) was again affiliated with the BDAFL. The relationship between the BDAFL and NCCUA is very positive and this is due to the excellent leadership shown by Darrel Luck and his committee.

The BDAFL Board agreed to a new one year agreement for the NCCUA to supply umpires to the BDAFL. There was a change to the way the umpire payments were calculated and whilst

9 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report the major component continued to be paid on match day the umpires had the opportunity to be paid an incentive payment of approximately 20%. To receive the incentive payment the umpires had to be available for 80% of matches, attend 75% of training and to either be accredited or obtaining accreditation. Those umpires who met the incentive criteria received their incentive payments at the end of Round 9 and at the conclusion of the year.

This year also saw the appointment of Ms Christine Burrows as the BDAFL Umpires Coach. Christine joined the BDAFL from AFL Sydney and her enthusiasm and dedicated approach to the role achieved great results in both lifting umpiring numbers and performances. A definite highlight is the number of younger umpires who are progressing into the BDAFL from both the Central Coast and Newcastle junior squads. This augers well for the future.

In another positive move the umpires moved their training base to Gibson Oval, Morisset. This location is more central and easier to access. The BDAFL continued to cover the cost of the lease.

The Umpire’s appointment panel consisted of Christine, NCCUA Representative (Roger Crowhurst) and BDAFL Representative (Garry Burkinshaw).

At the beginning of the year it was decided that with insufficient field umpires to fill all commitments, all Black Diamond Cup matches would be allocated a full panel of umpires, with one umpire then appointed to all First Division matches followed by Second Division. Should there be surplus umpires after this, two umpires would then be appointed, commencing at First Division.

Club umpires continued to play an important role in the BDAFL with each team in First & Second Division required to provide a club umpire. This meant that when an NCCUA umpire was appointed there would be three umpires officiating the match. No match could commence without a minimum of two umpires.

Club Umpires were required to be registered which was obtained after completing a simple on-line club umpiring training course. In 2013, there were 46 club officials who officiated as a club umpire.

At the beginning of the season the BDAFL adopted the AFL NSW/ACT Generic By-Laws. The aim of this is have all the affiliated leagues adopting the same set of By-Laws. Adopting these changes meant that a number of existing By-Laws had to be amended.

With the introduction of new clubs as well as existing clubs changing their jumper design in recent years, the Board decided that the existing water carrier and club umpire shirts needed to be changed. With the support of ‘Prime 7’ all clubs were supplied with new sky blue shirts for the water carriers and orange/charcoal shirts for the club umpires.

In 2013, the BDAFL used Sherrin KB footballs, with a new football required for all Black Diamond Cup matches. A used football (defined as having not been used for more than two games previously) could be used for both First & Second Division.

Cougar Sportswear were the exclusive supplier of playing attire as was required under the final year of an existing three year contract.

All clubs were required to order their playing attire through the BDAFL who in turn submitted the order to Cougar Sportswear. Lake Macquarie decided to source their own playing attire and were subsequently sanctioned by the BDAFL Board, as their attire did not adhere to BDAFL By-Laws.

Cougar Sportswear’s performance can best be described as mediocre with:

- Orders not being delivered within agreed times; - Orders being lost; - Completed orders being delivered to wrong addresses - Quality of gear not being of suitable standard; - Incorrect pricing on invoices. - Poor communication

10 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

The end result was that a number of clubs did not have the correct playing attire for up to half of the year, with Maitland Saints Second Division side having to play in borrowed jumpers during this time.

A small amount of compensation was obtained from Cougar and subsequently on forwarded to the clubs.

The BDAFL advised AFL NSW/ACT of their dissatisfaction with the current approved supplier arrangement, however unfortunately it had little effect as AFL NSW/ACT are continuing with this arrangement in 2014, albeit without Cougar Sportswear.

The clubs continued to build on their relationship with the junior clubs within their pathways, with the BDAFL theming a round as “Pathways Round” in July. Activities included Juniors and seniors playing at the same ground on the same day, Auskickers playing at half time and Auskickers walking out with the Black Diamond Cup players prior to a match.

This is a positive step and whilst it would be fair to say that some clubs engage with their junior clubs better than other, they all acknowledge the importance the junior clubs play.

It was also pleasing to note that the relationship between the BDAFL and the Newcastle and Central Coast junior associations was very good with all three bodies working well together and key officials attending each other’s major events.

A major focus this year was to improve the BDAFL’s exposure, not only with mainstream media but also social media. I am pleased to confirm that there has been excellent progress made in this area with an increase in exposure in print and on radio and television. Also the leagues website, facebook and twitter are all showing significant increase in activity.

Thanks must go to our Media Partners, Prime7 who each week ran advertisements promoting our games as well as providing the introduction for our Presentation Night. Also to Star104.5FM who not only promoted the matches during the week, but also had their roadstar vehicle attend a number of matches throughout the year, giving out promotional material as well as doing live crosses from the ground.

In closing I would like to thank all those people who have assisted me in my role this year, in particular to Michael and his Board, the Club Presidents, Secretaries, Football Managers, Chris Burrows in her role as BDAFL Umpires Coach and Simon Smyth as AFL NSW/ACT Regional Manager, Hunter Central Coast Region.

See you in 2014.

UMPIRE COACH’S REPORT

When I took up the position of BDAFL Umpire’s coach in February, the situation regarding the number of umpires for the season was not looking very promising, as I had been told that several umpires from the previous season were not returning and that existing numbers would be very dramatically reduced.

It would be a challenge to recruit new umpires, and perhaps even regain some who had previously walked away from umpiring.

Training was held at Morisset twice a week, Monday and Wednesday, and although at times the turnout was not always good, there was a core of umpires from all disciplines who attended at least once a week.

Throughout the season I have done match day observations – both on and off the field – and provided feedback to the umpires regarding their performances and I’m pleased to say that the feedback was taken on board and the umpires have worked really hard to make the suggested improvements.

I have worked with Carl Fletcher the NSW Umpire Development Co-ordinator for our region and the Junior groups to help me identify promising junior umpires who would be able to make the transition to senior football.

This past season we have transitioned 3 junior umpires who ran as Boundary Umpires last year to Field Umpires this year, and we have run 5 new Regional Squad umpires as well, and have regained 2 Umpires who were thought to be lost to umpiring. We finished the season with a total of 10 more Field umpires for the season, as well as another 2 field umpires who were not available on a regular basis due work and family commitments.

We’ve recruited 9 boundary umpires from the junior groups, who I would hope will make the transition to field umpires when they have more experience – in the next season or two. We’ve also have 2 new goal umpires. . We’ve also had some very good Representative game appointments this year:

 BDAFL Rep Game v Farrar – Roger Crowhurst

 NSW Combined High Schools Football Championships – Broken Hill – Lachie Head, Joseph O’Brien.

 NEAFL.Game - Swans v Eastlake – Cooper Williams and Jake Lowe

 Academy Series – Josh Duffy-Sykes and Lachie Head

 School Sport Australian Football Championships – Darwin – Lachie Head – winner of the A.S. McLean Medal as All Australian Umpire, and will go to South Africa in January 2014.

 NAB Under 16’s National Championships – Blacktown – Josh Duffy-Sykes and Lachie Head, Cooper Williams was invited but couldn’t go due to injury

 AFL GSJ championships – Stephen Blume, Sean Fox and Jake Bateman

I thank the NCCUA for their support and assistance during the season – it’s been invaluable. I’d like to thanks the Clubs for their support this past season although I did not receive a lot of formal feedback from the Clubs during the season – there was informal feedback as well and on all levels what I did receive was very constructive.

It was also pleasing to receive complimentary feedback to pass on to the umpires as well and I look forward to working with the Clubs next season.

12 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

I’d like to thank the BDAFL for the opportunity to take up this position, thanking Garry Burkinshaw, the BDAFL Board and Staff for their support over the entire season, I have enjoyed this season very much and am looking forward to next season,

WYONG LAKES CLUBHOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE On the eve of their biggest fundraising event of the year, Wyong Lakes were devastated following a fire destroying their clubhouse at Don Small Oval.

The fire however failed to destroy the Wyong Lakes' spirits as they forged ahead with their "Pink Charity" day at Don Small Oval.

The fire which took hold at 1am on Friday morning, 11 May 2013 completely gutted the building and with it all the clubs equipment, as well as the canteen and bar stocks for the Charity day.

"We lost everything that was in the clubhouse" Wyong Lakes Secretary John Griffey said.

"We had just fully stocked the canteen and bars in readiness for Saturday, but this all gone" he said.

Given the amount of damage and the concerns around safety there were thoughts to calling the game of however with the assistance of Wyong Council as well as local businesses and club supporters the day will not only proceed, but the club hopes will be even better, as locals come and show the support.

Wyong Lakes President, Ken Clouten has been amazed at the level of support the club has received from not only within the club but also from outside.

"As soon as people heard about the fire, we have been inundated with well wishes and offers to help" Clouten said. A massive crowd attended the match that saw Wyong Lakes go down to Cardiff by just one point with the final kick of the day deciding the result. 600 game man Billy Denniss thrilled the crowd with a goal in the third quarter.

The club’s contents were covered under JLT’s Insurance Asset Protect Policy, however all the clubs memorabilia and artefacts were destroyed.

The clubs in BDAFL were great with many offering their assistance to the club.

The club is currently negotiating with council to arrange for the clubhouse to be rebuilt.

REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL

BDAFL participated in the AFL NSW/ACT Representative program in 2012 with a match against Farrer FNL at Robertson Oval, Wagga Wagga.

Chris Bishop was appointed as Coach with Courtney Knight his assistant, with Football Operations Manager, Garry Burkinshaw joining them as Chairman of Selectors and also Team Manager.

The program was reduced to just a one week commitment from the players with training on Tuesday night at No 1 Sportsground and Thursday night at Bateau Bay Sporting Facility.

The squad would then travel to Wagga Wagga on Saturday, play the match on Sunday and then return home on Sunday night after the match.

The reduced program was well received by the players with an improved commitment as a result.

In the lead up to the program both coaches spoke to most players in contention advising them of the program, in addition to this, matches involving all clubs were watched by the selectors.

A training squad of 26 players were selected to prepare for the weekend, prior to the squad being selected three players were not considered due to prior commitments whilst another two were injured.

From the 26 players selected two players had to withdraw through injury, whilst three made themselves unavailable. An additional two players were added to the squad following these withdrawals.

One of those who had to withdraw was the inspirational Coach, Chris Bishop with a knee injury. Bishy’s disappointment did not dampen his enthusiasm for the coaching role.

From the remaining 23 players the commitment was fantastic with 19 attending training on Tuesday and 22 on the Thursday. Unfortunately Cameron Keast failed a fitness test on the Thursday night and was ruled out of the match, which left the remaining 22 players and support staff to make the trip to Wagga Wagga.

Following training on the Thursday night the players had pizza for dinner at the ground and they were also presented with their playing gear (except jumpers) and polo shirt.

Courtney Knight and Liam Gibson were named as captains with Luke Rawnsley and Jayson Van Dam the vice captains. These four gentlemen were excellent leaders both on and off the field.

Jason Bradley from Bodyworx Physio was appointed as the Physio for the team and he attended both training sessions as well as making the trip to Wagga Wagga. Long term BDAFL trainer Sean Riedel was also appointed as trainer and he attended Thursday training and the trip to Wagga Wagga. The professionalism shown by these two gentlemen was well received by the players and they ensured that all players were well treated and returned to their club in good fitness. A testament to their work was the fact that all players were able to play for their club the following week.

Thanks also to Mitch Knight who volunteered to be runner for the match.

The players travelled to Wagga Wagga on Saturday courtesy of Port Stephens Coaches and stayed at their regular haunt Palm & Pawn Motel, North Wagga Wagga, who once again were excellent hosts.

After a short run and stretch upon arrival in Wagga Wagga the squad had a dinner at the Wagga Rules Club before retiring for the night. 15 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

It was an early start for the squad on Sunday morning with the match commencing at 11am. The players were presented with their playing jumpers by Chris Bishop at the Motel. The players had to return the jumpers after the match however were provided with an alternate jumper to keep.

The weather conditions for the match were ideal and the ground was in excellent condition, apart from the cricket pitch area which was very muddy.

In a tightly fought match the BDAFL won by four points (see match report).

Following the match, a function was held at the ground which included finger food and refreshments.

Courtney Knight and Liam Gibson were presented with the Robert Hughes Memorial Shield as the winning team (pictured previous page), whilst Gilson was presented with a plaque having been named the Best player for the BDAFL (pictured right).

Following the function the players made the return journey home, which I am led to believe was very enjoyable.

Overall, the Representative Program was considered a success not only with the result but also the commitment and passion shown by all those who participated.

Thanks to Chris and Courtney for their enthusiasm and professionalism and also to the players, support staff and those family and friends who made the trip to Wagga Wagga.

Rep Coaches Report

The 2013 Black Diamond AFL Representative Program resulted in a four point win over rivals Farrer FL.

The one week Program was designed to minimise the time commitment required by players. The selection committee of Garry Burkinshaw (Chairman of Selectors), Chris Bishop (Head Coach) and Courtney Knight (Assistant Coach / Co-Captain) assessed players from the opening round, weighting selection criteria based on football ability, commitment to the league and perceived cohesiveness of team.

All players were contacted directly by Garry prior to the squad being announced to discuss availability and enthusiasm towards representing the Black Diamond. The result was that 26 players were named, all of which were passionate about representative football, and participating in an enjoyable and successful program. The 26 player squad consisted of a balance of experience and youth, with a club representation across 6 clubs (with invitations sent to players at two further clubs but were declined due to legitimate prior commitments).

The training program was put together with a high focus on player enjoyment, and with the vision of playing a high skilled, physical and team orientated brand of football. The two training sessions (Tuesday the 4th at No.1 Sports Ground, and Thursday the 6th of June at Bateau Bay Sporting Complex) were at almost full attendance and were deemed to be highly successful by both players and coaches.

On Saturday the 8th of June after arriving in Wagga Wagga a light training run was conducted. The aim was to stretch and loosen up after the bus trip, and to help the players unwind.

The team arrived at the ground on game day (Sunday 9th of June) one hour and a half before the game to minimise standing around. A team brief was delivered one hour before play by Head Coach Chris Bishop, and a solid warm up 40 minutes before play was coordinated by the on-field leadership group.

16 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

The match was a committed and physical display by the Black Diamond. A well orchestrated structure, combined with having the upper hand in contested possessions, tackling and defensive pressure meant that the Black Diamond had regular scoring opportunities. At times skill errors resulting in turnovers, low conversion rate in front of goal and giving away free kicks in the defensive 50 meant Farrer FL remained within 10 – 15 point reach throughout most of the match the match.

The last quarter saw Farrer FL serge to kick 3 goals and take the lead in the latter stages of the quarter, only to see Black Diamond kick a late goal to win the match by four points. Hard running, determination and some key performances by Gibson, Fleming, Wilmot, Shackleton and Webster helped seal the win.

The players deemed the program highly worthwhile and successful. A highlight was the performance of the first year players, particularly the younger players both on and off the field. The development opportunity is one that many players embraced. Lastly, the leadership and professionalism shown by the seasoned representative players was exemplary and something the local AFL community could be proud of.

The presence of team comradely and pride of the Black Diamond AFL was a feature and a key to the success of the program, and a further indicator that the program will continue to be supported by the players into the future.

Chris Bishop & Courtney Knight

Match Report

Black Diamond AFL (BDAFL) Representative side continued their dominance over the with a narrow four point win, 10.12.72 to 10.8.68.

In a match played in perfect weather conditions, except the muddy cricket pitch area, at Robertson Oval, Wagga Wagga the BDAFL had to rely on a late Mathew Bailey goal to seal the win.

The match opened with both sides taking a while to settle, with many turnovers affecting the game as a spectacle however James Webster’s class came to the fore with an excellent finish to record the BDAFL’s first goal of the game. A further goal to co- captain Courtney Knight saw the BDAFL enter the first break leading by two points.

The second quarter saw the BDAFL start to get their running game going, although the slippery cricket pitch in the middle of the ground was causing both teams some problems. Goals to Josh Avis, Jeremy Eddy and Matty Spinks saw the BDAFL to open up a 16 point lead however a late goal to the home side saw the BDAFL lead by 10 points at the half time break.

The BDAFL’s defence led by Jayson Van Dam, Luke Rawnsley, Ben Stewart and Corey Shackleton were superb and on many occasions prevented Farrer League goals with their desperation and coolness under pressure.

Farrer League lifted their intensity in the third quarter and the contest’s physicality lifted a notch as both teams were looking to gain the ascendancy. BDAFL were getting great service from their midfielders in co-captain Liam Gibson, Andrew Wilmott and Blake Erickson and goals to Gibson, James Polglase and Knight matched the three goals kicked by the home side, and at the final break the BDAFL still led by nine points.

17 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

Urged on by Coach, Chris Bishop, the BDAFL got off to the perfect start with Polglase taking a mark in the goal square to extend the lead to 15 points. With Brendan Harper starting to get on top in the ruck, the BDAFL looked like they could run away with the game, however some poor turnovers and a determined home side, saw them kick three straight goals and take a narrow lead.

The last ten minutes was a torrid affair with neither team giving an inch. Both sides had opportunities to kick goals, but desperate defence thwarted both teams before clever lead up work from Kurt Fleming and Gibson saw Bailey get the ball in the goal square and kick what turned out to be the match winning goal.

The match was a fantastic contest by two good teams played before a strong crowd. The result was a great reward for the BDAFL team who had 22 contributors and were well led by Bishop.

In the other game, AFL kicked a late goal to defeat AFL Sydney Development squad 14.10.94 to 13.11.89

ISAAC HEENEY

Isaac Heeney who continued to impress throughout 2013 with his performances at a higher level.

The 17 year represented AFL NSW/ACT Rams in the National Under 18’s Carnival. Despite being one of the youngest players in the side Isaac was one of the teams best performers and was rewarded by receiving a 2014 Level 2, AIS-AFL Scholarship. Isaac was the recipient of a Level 1 scholarship this year.

Isaac also made his debut with the Sydney Swans Reserves, picking up 21 possessions and kicking two goals.

In addition to this Isaac, also performed strongly for Cardiff, which was reflected in him being runner up in the Elliott Davey Medal, despite playing only six matches.

Isaac is ineligible for the AFL draft this year, however it is hoped that Isaac will be draftee in 2014 draft.

LACHLAN HEAD

It was a big year for 16 year old field umpire, Lachlan Head.

After progressing from Central Coast juniors, Head made his debut as a Black Diamond Cup umpire. After an impressive season but he also umpired the Black Diamond Cup Grand Final in his debut season. He performed very well in the biggets game of the year which augers well for his future.

In addition to this however, Head will travel to South Africa in January as part of the AFL’s All-Australian Under 15’s sides tour.

Head was selected after being named as the All-Australian umpire at the School Sport Australian Football Carnival which was held in Darwin in August.

SWANS PLAY NEAFL MATCH IN NEWCASTLE

For the second time in the past three years, Sydney Swans Reserves have play a North Eastern AFL (NEAFL) match in Newcastle.

The NEAFL is a State league competition involving teams from Canberra, Sydney, Queensland Northern Territory and the Reserve Grade teams from AFL Clubs, Sydney Swans, GWS Giants, Gold Coast Suns and Brisbane Lions.

This year, Canberra club, Eastlake played the Sydney Swans at Newcastle No 1 Sportsground.

To host the match the BDAFL were required to cover the cost of both teams travel, accommodation and meal costs. The teams travelled to Newcastle on Friday and returned home after the match on Saturday.

The BDAFL were able to host the match due to financial support from The City of Newcastle Council and OPEC Systems who came on board as Match day Sponsor. With this support the BDAFL were able to allow free entry to the match, and this along with the fine weather were contributing factors to a good crowd being in attendance.

As an additional bonus for the Black Diamond AFL, the Sydney Swans invited talented young players to play as top up players for the match.

Every week the Swans Reserve grade side require top up players due to the NEAFL competition rules and also because the clubs AFL list is insufficient to fill two full sides. The number of top up players requires vary from week to week depending upon the number of injuries the club have each week.

For the match in Newcastle, eleven top up players were required with the following players selected: Daniel Lloyd & Max Mumford (Killarney Vale), Blake Erickson (Nelson Bay), Josh Avis & Jacob Dawes (Newcastle City), James Webster, Jay Lewis, Will Delahunty, Kurt Fleming & Josh Polglase (Terrigal Avoca), Matthew Spinks (Warners Bay).

The players were required to stay with the team on Friday night and as such benefitted from being able to experience first hand how elite players prepare.

The Sydney Swans were able to win the match, with all BDAFL players contributing well (see match report below).

Following the match, Dawes, Erickson and Spinks were invited to play in additional matches, with Spinks playing in the Swans winning Eastern Conference Semi Finals and Final victories whilst Dawes and fellow Newcastle City player Mitch Crawford played in the NEAFL Grand Final, which the Swans lost to Brisbane lions.

Overall it was a fantastic opportunity for the local youngsters and it is hoped that this relationship with the Sydney Swans will be further enhanced in future years.

Match Report (courtesy of Josh Leeson and Newcastle Herald) Premiership hero and Swans reserves grade coach Jared Crouch has no doubts that the Black Diamond competition will produce more AFL footballers in the near future.

Crouch could not have been happier after the Swans, bolstered by the inclusion of 11 players from the Black Diamond AFL, overpowered ACT Eastlakes 15.19-109 to 7.7-49 in the North Eastern AFL at No.1 Sportsground on Saturday.

Jesse White, Tim Membry and Tony Armstrong led the way for the Swans, who led at every break to strengthen their place at the top of the ladder.

But Crouch said the contribution of the local players should not be underestimated.

‘‘You saw how well the local boys fitted in with what we wanted to do,’’ Crouch said.

20 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

‘‘They had a crack and played the game simple.

‘‘That is why we recorded such a comprehensive win because of those guys.

‘‘Not only us, I think teams like Eastlakes who are playing in our competition. Sometimes they try and scout around for ex-AFL players.

‘‘There is clearly some talent here that would bolster them.

‘‘Who knows, in time, we might even have a Newcastle side in the NEAFL, which would be a good thing.’’

Newcastle City full forward Jacob Dawes, who at 203cm and 100kg has the right frame for the AFL, was over the moon at the experience

‘‘To sing the Swans song afterwards was awesome,’’ he said.

‘‘I support them and to be in that environment ... it was a great experience.’’

Dawes, 23 rotated with White between the forward line and ruck.

‘‘I learned a lot from him, mainly positional things,’’ Dawes said.

‘‘Everyone can work hard, it is knowing where to go.

‘‘I’d love to get to that level.

‘‘It is hard in a league-dominated town. It is great for the Swans to come up here and I hope it becomes an annual thing.’’

Apart from Dawes, the Black Diamond was represented by Josh Avis (Newcastle City), Matt Spinks (Warners Bay), Blake Erickson (Nelson Bay), James Webster, Kurt Flemming, Josh Polglase, Will Delahunty, Jay Lewis (Terrigal-Avoca), Max Mumford and Daniel Lloyd (Killarney Vale).

‘‘James Webster, he was a scholarship player at Essendon for a couple of years, was strong,’’ Crouch said.

‘‘Jay Lewis too, even big Jacob Dawes. They were all good.’’

A carnival-type crowd of about 1200 attended the game that Crouch said could become an annual fixture.

‘‘There is definitely a push for it,’’ he said.

‘‘It is a fantastic ground. It would be nice if it was 10 metres longer at either end. Then it would be perfect and you would play a lot more games here.

‘‘Thanks to for Eastlake in allowing the game to be played up here.’’

FINALS

The 2013 BDAFL competitions all used a final four final system with finals played over three weeks. The Semi Finals were played on the first weekend at Newcastle No 1 Sportsground (2nd semi final) and Bateau Bay Sports Facility (1st semi final). The Preliminary and Grand Finals were both played at Newcastle No 1 Sportsground.

Newcastle No.1 Sports Ground has been the home of the Black Diamond AFL in each of its fourteen years.

As per previous seasons, the canteen and alcohol sales offered to clubs who wished to tender. This is a chance for all clubs to operate these functions which can raise much needed funds.

The Entrance Bateau Bay Junior Football Club very kindly agreed to run the canteen and bar for the first semi final in exchange for the use of their equipment when we allocate matches to Bateau Bay throughout the year.

For the finals at No 1 Sportsground were a different matter with no club tendering to run the canteen and only Cardiff tendering for the Bar, albeit for the Grand Final only. This was very surprising considering that all funds raised remain with the club following the BDAFL’s Board decision to remove the levy previously charged. One can only assume that all clubs are travelling well financially.

In the end Lake Macquarie Dockers were asked to do the canteen and Cardiff the same for the bar.

The BDAFL provided the Liquor Licence for both Semi Finals and Preliminary Final with Cardiff required to provide the Licence for the Grand Final.

Security was provided for all finals by Wilson security, with two for all finals except for the Grand Final which there were four. The Cardiff were required to pay for the security for the Grand Final with the BDAFL and Cardiff sharing the cost for security at the Semi Final and Preliminary Final.

The Lions club of Newcastle were approached to provide volunteers to act as gatekeepers for the finals. The agreed to assist and a donation of $2,500.00 was made to the club as recognition of their support.

Admission charges for the final series remained the same at the Newcastle finals. Adults $10, aged pensioners $5, Children under 16 free. Parking for Netball was $5 per car.

Due to an issue with charging an admission fee at Bateau Bay Sports Facility the 1st Semi Final was free admission.

Football Records were provided free of charge for all finals.

The weather for all finals was excellent which encouraged good crowds to attend.

Grand Final day was an excellent event with the leagues logo painted on the ground an excellent initiative.

Jennifer Hope again sang the National Anthem prior to the Black Diamond Cup match. 22 Black Diamond AFL Inc 2013 Annual Report

Presentations were conducted on a stage with the President of the Premiership team presenting the premiership medallions and Premiership trophy.

We were pleased that BDAFL Life Member, Gary McBain was on hand to present the McBain Medal to the player adjudged Best on Ground in the Black Diamond Cup Grand Final, Courtney Knight.

Diesel Productions were engaged to film all three Grand Finals. They provided commentary for the First & Second Division Grand Finals with the Football Operations Manager providing the commentary for the Black Diamond Cup Grand Final.

To help off set the cost of the filming each team were required to pay $200.00. In exchange for this each team received a unedited copy of the Grand Final immediately after the game as well as an edited copy later on. In addition to this they were able to order copies of the edited DVD’s for their members at a cost of $5 each. The BDAFL then offered for the sale copies of the respective DVD’s for $25 each.

The filming off the Grand Final was well received and should be continued in future years with thanks to Diesel Productions.

It’s Photography were engaged to take the team photo’s as well as action shots throughout the day. Copies of the photo’s were provided to the BDAFL with photo’s displayed on their website for the public to view and purchase if they wish.

The netball Grand Finals clashed with the Preliminary finals in this created problems with parking as those attending the netball just parked wherever they liked. The Matchday Manager ended up acting as a traffic marshall to ensure parking was able to completed in an orderly fashion.

Crowd behaviour was pretty good for most finals although a small minority of Terrigal Avoca members failed to adhere to the leagues Code of Conduct and were subsequently issued with Breach Notices.

Terrigal Avoca AFC were also fined for failing to adhering to the BDAFL alcohol policy in that they brought their own alcohol into the venue and openly displayed it on the field after the Grand Final.

Patrons bringing alcohol into the venue continues to be a major issue especially for the Grand Final and this will need to be addressed next year.

ELLIOTT DAVEY MEDALLIST

Terrigal Avoca Panthers star, James Webster was awarded the Elliott Davey Medal at a gala ceremony at Belmont 16 Footers Sailing Club.

The 21-year old Webster received Black Diamond AFL’s highest honour after enjoying a strong season in his first season with the Panthers.

Webster, a Central Coast junior transferred to AFL Sydney club , North Shore in 2009 after receiving a AFL NSW/ACT Scholarship with Essendon. In 2010, he was a member of the inaugural GWS Giants side which played in the VFL TAC Cup Under 18’s competition.

Essendon drafted Webster as a rookie in 2011 and he spent the season with the Bombers and whilst he was unable to crack an AFL game, he played the season in the strong VFL competition.

Delisted by the Bombers at the end of 2012, Webster moved to Brisbane to play for Redlands in the North Eastern AFL (NEAFL) and was a key player in that clubs rise to fourth position.

At the end of 2012, Webster decided to return home and after strong overtures from a number of high profile clubs around the state opted to link up with Terrigal Avoca.

The fleet footed midfielder played all 14 games for the Panthers kicking 25 goals and backed up his home and away season form with an excellent finals series as well.

Webster also represented the Black Diamond AFL in their win over Farrer FL and played for the Sydney Swans Reserves in their NEAFL win over Eastlake at No 1 Sportsground.

Webster (15 votes) did not have it all his own way in the Medal count, and after not polling a vote in the first nine rounds, needed a Best on Ground performance in the clubs final round win against Killarney Vale to overtake Newcastle City captain and 2008 winner, Luke Rawnsley and Cardiff young gun Isaac Heeney , who both finished with 14 votes. Singleton follower, Kris Thompson was a further vote back in fourth position.

Heeney’s performance was quite remarkable given that he only played in six matches throughout the year.

AFL NSW/ACT COACH OF THE YEAR – CHRIS BISHOP Terrigal Avoca Coach, Chris Bishop has been announced as the AFL NSW/ACT Coach of the Year.

This is a fantastic achievement as nominations are received from all senior, women’s and junior leagues across NSW and ACT.

Bishop coached Terrigal Avoca to the BDAFL Minor Premiership before losing the Grand Final to Newcastle City.

He was also the Coach of the BDAFL Representative side which defeated Farrer FL in Wagga Wagga in June.

Bishop also is the head coach of the Central Coast Region of the Sydney Swans Academy.

Bishop made it back to back BDAFL Coach of the Year titles this year when he was named as Coach of the BDAFL Team of the Year.

Bishop suffered a knee injury in May, which saw him miss the remainder of the season as coach, however has recently commenced running in a bid to take the field again in 2014.

MERCHANDISING

In 2013, the BDAFL used Sherrin KB footballs, with a new football required for all Black Diamond Cup matches. A used football (defined as having not been used for more than two games previously) could be used for both First & Second Division.
