NATIONAL COLLEGIATE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S FENCING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championship 2 History 4 All-Time Team Results 8 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Columbia takes home second straight title: The final day of action at the 2016 NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championships, held at Brandeis, saw three repeat winners. Two individuals achieved the feat, while Columbia was crowned the team champions for the second year running. The Lions took a 13-point lead into the day, and though it closed to double digits at certain points throughout the day, the repeat was not really in question. Columbia finished with a seven-point victory, 174-167, over Ohio State, thanks to a balanced attack that saw them score 30 points in three of the six weapons and not less than 24 in any of them. “To come out ahead shows what a great group of individuals we have on our team,” Columbia coach Michael Aufrichtig said. “Other than all the practices and workouts and all the preparation, one of the main things it came down to is their heart, their love for each other. So when they’re out there on the strip, they’re fencing for not just themselves but for their entire team.” Columbia is the first repeat NCAA Fencing champion since Penn State in 2009 and 2010. It’s the Lions’ fourth overall combined title since the championship went to this format in 1990. They also won back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993. Ohio State finished in second place despite qualifying one less than the maximum 12 qualifiers for the championship.

  • FENCERS CLUB Est
FENCERS CLUB est. 1883 September 2, 2008 Dear Members, Former Members, and Friends, Fencers Club’s 2008 fiscal year, which ended yesterday, was probably the most eventful year in our 125-year history. During the Summer of 2007 several of the Club’s coaches left the Club and many of their students followed them to two new clubs. The resulting diminution of membership dues created additional financial stress on the FC, as we also faced the necessity of moving in May 2008 to a much more expensive space. I am pleased to report that our annus horribilus has turned into a highly successful transitional year. First of all, three of our members came home from the Olympics with silver medals: Erinn Smart and Emily Cross for the women’s foil team event and Keeth Smart for the men’s saber team event. In addition, Nzingha Prescod won the Cadet Women’s Foil World Championship. Everyone at the Club is enormously proud of these outstanding fencers. There is more good news. We are happy to welcome Kornel Udvarhelyi and Buckie Leach back to the Club as coaches, starting this week. We have missed them and are glad to have them once again as members of the Fencers Club family. Lyn Rollins came on board as the Club’s new Manager one year ago and has done a terrific job of reorganizing and modernizing our procedures across the board, while continuing our tradition of friendly and welcoming interaction with members, parents, and coaches. During the past year Paul Oratofsky has done an outstanding job, putting in place a software system that allows members to join, and pay for lessons, rent lockers, etc.

UKY Video Production | 2019-05-20 BTB (Lee Kiefer - Med Student and Olympic Fencer) [SCHOOL CHEERS] [MUSIC PLAYING] ANNOUNCER: From the campus of the University of Kentucky, you're listening to "Behind the Blue." [MUSIC PLAYING] CARL NATHY: Hello, and welcome to the Behind the Blue podcast. I'm Carl Nathy, pleased to be joined in this interview by Lee Kiefer. Lee has just finished her second year of medical school at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. She grew up in Lexington, and she has some very interesting things going on in her life, including being a two time Olympic. I said, yes, summer Olympics, as in London 2012, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. And she is aiming to compete in the summer 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Lee thanks for taking the time, and welcome in. LEE KIEFER: Thank you for having me. Happy to be here. CARL NATHY: You have a fascinating background. Tell us a little bit. You grew up in Lexington, and grew up in a family that had both fencing in the family and medical education in the family. LEE KIEFER: Yes. Fencing and medicine is all I've ever known since I was born, it seems like. Growing up, my dad, who is a physician, he decided that he wanted to try fencing. He hadn't picked up a foil, let's say, in 10, 15 years. And me and my siblings watched him compete at a local tournament. And then he asked if we wanted to try it. We said yes, and then almost 20 years later, I'm still here.
