Christ's Baptism Foreshadows Our Own

At irst glance, the Baptism of the Lord might seem an odd feast. Since the teaches that the Sacrament of Baptism is necessary for the remission of sins, particularly , why was Christ baptized? After all, He was born without Original Sin, and He lived His entire life without sinning. Therefore, He had no need of the sacrament, as we do.

In submitting Himself humbly to the baptism of St. John the Baptist, however, Christ provided the example for the rest of us. If even He should be baptized, though He had no need of it, how much more should the rest of us be thankful for this sacrament, which frees us from the darkness of sin and incorporates us into the Church, the life of Christ on earth! His Baptism, therefore, was necessary --not for Him, but for us.

Many of the Fathers of the Church, as well as the medieval Scholastics, saw Christ's Baptism as the institution of the sacrament. His Flesh blessed the water, and the descent of the Holy Spirit (in the form of a dove) and the voice of announcing that this was His Son, in Whom He was well pleased, marked the beginning of Christ's public ministry. And, on behalf of all the priests at St. Rose of Lima, I want to thank all of you who sent us priests beautiful Christmas cards and wishes and wonderful gifts— both baked goods and other delights. We are so grateful! As we continue our Year of Mercy, I hope you will take the time to come to the two next events for our Year of Mercy. The first is “Experience the Mercy of God’s Healing.” The Dominican priest, Fr. Michail Forde, will be bringing to our parish from the St. Jude Shrine in Chicago the arm bone relic of St Jude the Apostle who is the Patron of Impossible Causes. This is the first time that this relic will be on the West Coast. Fr. Forde will preach all the English Masses today, Sunday, January 10—the Feast of the Baptism of . Then from Monday, January 11 to Wednesday, January 13, Fr. Forde will celebrate the St. Jude Novena in St. Rose of Lima Church, starting at 7:00 p.m. Everyone who comes will have the opportunity to reverence the relic of St. Jude at the end of the novena. Invite family members and friends to come, especially those who are seriously ill or have big problems. We want to pray for their healing and the answers to their prayers. The second event is “Mercy for Marriage.” Msgr. Craig Cox, the Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Santa Clarita and the former head of the Archdiocesan Marriage Tribunal, will be here on Thursday, January 14, at 7:00 p.m. to speak in the parish hall about the marriage annulment process. If you are not married in the Church or if you were married in the Church then got divorced and are now remarried outside the Church or if you know someone in those situations, come to this session and invite family and friends who may need this guidance and assistance. In this Year of Mercy, we want to help people to get their marriages blessed in the Church. Again, thank you for everything you do. May God bless you in this New Year and especially in this Year of Mercy.

Yours in Christ, Fr. Joseph Shea
