    BOTTLENECKING How to take your first slide into the blues by Glenn Weiser Late one night in1903, in the Mississippi Delta town of Tutwiler, W.C. Handy-the man who was later to proclaim himself "inventor of the blues"- had fallen asleep on a bench in a railway station while waiting for a train. He was awakened by the sound of another black man, shabbily dressed, singing and playing guitar in an unusual manner - instead of fretting the neck with his fingers, he was sliding a knife up and down the strings. The musician’s moaning singing style and the guitar thus played struck Handy as "the weirdest music I have ever heard in my life." Handy’s description of his encounter with this unknown blues player gives us an early glimpse of slide guitar, which is the technique of using a smooth, hard object-usually a hollow metal or glass cylinder-to change the pitches of the strings. Also known as bottleneck guitar (the necks of bottles make good slides), this style had its origins in African one-stringed instruments and also, some say, in Hawaiian guitar styles, which were brought to the south by Hawaiian soldiers during the Spanish-American War. Slide guitar was played by several important bluesmen, including Eddie "Son" House, Tampa Red, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Blind Willie Johnson, and others. Because it offers effects unavailable with conventional guitar technique such as glissandos, voice-like cries, and notes between the frets, it is worth learning at least a bit of this style. OVERVIEW I have been playing in open tunings almost continuously for 35 years - since 1966 when I saw Tom Rush at a little club out side of Fort Bragg, NC. He played a dynamite song that was about a train & he used a Telephone Jack on his little finger that slid up the neck to make these groovy sounds. On his break I was able to talk with him & I asked him how he did that.. "open E" he said "you make an E chord by winding up the 3 strings that you would fret to make the regular E chord". I went back to the barracks & tuned my guitar to open E and I have been playing only in open tunings since then. In 1967 I heard some John Fahey records which solidified my fondness for open tunings. John Fahey was a phenomenal guitar player & composer for guitar – find & listen to the Takoma recordings Volumes 1 thru 6. I taught myself how to play guitar in open E, A & D. I did this with no outside help & because of this I evolved my own way of keeping track of what each chord was relative to the tuning I was in.

    Steel Guitar Tuning Tips peterson Strobe Tuners for Steel Guitar STEEL GUITAR TUNING What is sweetened tuning? Up to now, the word temperament has been used mainly in conjunction with keyboard instruments and is defined as a way of placing the 12 notes of the chromatic scale at varying degrees of pitch from one another. We at Peterson Tuners thought it was high time a name was coined which described altering the pitch of some or all of those notes. We came up with the name “Sweetener” which means any variation from Equal temperament when tuning an instrument. Choices when tuning The old argument about whether one should tune to Equal Temperament or Just Intonation misses the point that a musician should view tuning as an effect - not a right way or wrong way to voice an instrument. There are ways to design a tuning to take advantage of a particular instrument’s attributes or compensate for an instruments flaws, but to do that, we need to know the difference between tuning one way as opposed to another. Intervals Two pitches sounded together create an interval. The most common intervals are The fifth = two tones separated by 6 semitones in a chromatic scale (example C4 and G4 played together) The fourth = two tones separated by 4 semitones in a chromatic scale (example C4 and F4 played together) The major third = two tones separated by 3 semitones in a chromatic scale (example C4 and E4 played together) The minor third = two tones separated by 2 semitones in a chromatic scale (example C4 and D# played together) Consonance & Dissonance The terms consonance & dissonance describe the degree of harmony of an interval.
