Student Crime Prevention Advice Every year students in halls of residence and rented accommodation suffer from burglaries because thieves see their homes as easy pickings. This is usually because security is poor and each person tends to have their own TV/video, stereo and/or computer - turning your home into an Aladdin's cave. Remember to:-

• Postcode your property to reduce its value to the thief.

• Back up your files on the hard drive of your computer, phone or tablet.

• Download tracking software to laptops, mobiles or tablet devices so that they can be activated and traced if your property does ever go missing.

• Always lock all windows and doors when you're not home.

• Even when you are at home, lock windows and external doors in rooms you're not using.

• Put some of your lights on timers to come on when you are out, keep blinds or curtains closed to prevent people looking inside.

• Never leave communal doors open and never let someone you don't recognise into the communal area of your building.

• Register all your property including electronic equipment, bikes and anything else of value on the national property database www.immobilise.com. It can help us to identify stolen property and arrest thieves.
