Director of Track & Field • Caryl Smith Gilbert Caryl Smith Gilbert is the USC Director of Track & Field which also means see overseas the development and running of the Trojans’ cross country program. She has placed the day to day operation of the sport in the capable hands of assistant coach David Freeman. It didn’t take long for Caryl Smith Gilbert to prove that USC had “hit a home run” when they named her as the Director of Track & Field on June 17, 2013. In her first three seasons at the helm of the Trojan program, USC has won three MPSF Indoor team titles, finished in the top two in the conference three times on the women’s side and two times on the men’s side and finished in the top 10 in the country twice for both the men and the women, with the men’s team posting two top five finishes in three seasons. Also, USC has had four individual event champions and averaged 20 first-team All-Americans per season. In addition, the cross country team posted its first team win since 2012 during the 2014 season, and making it more special was that it came against crosstown rival UCLA. In the classroom 41 athletes have been named to a Pac-12 All-Academic team and in 2016, Jaide Stepter was named the conference’s T&F Women’s Student-Athlete of the Year and Diego Lopez was granted a postgraduate scholarship. In her first season leading the Trojan program, she guided the men’s team to a fourth-place tie and the women’s team to a 16th-place tie at the NCAAs, the women’s team won the MPSF Indoor Championship and both men’s and women’s teams placed second at the Pac-12 Championships.

  • Sprinters Falsify the Deliberate Practice Model of Expertise
You can’t teach speed: sprinters falsify the deliberate practice model of expertise Michael P. Lombardo1 and Robert O. Deaner2 1 Department of Biology, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI, USA 2 Department of Psychology, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI, USA ABSTRACT Many scientists agree that expertise requires both innate talent and proper training. Nevertheless, the highly influential deliberate practice model (DPM) of expertise holds that talent does not exist or makes a negligible contribution to performance. It predicts that initial performance will be unrelated to achieving expertise and that 10 years of deliberate practice is necessary. We tested these predictions in the domain of sprinting. In Studies 1 and 2 we reviewed biographies of 15 Olympic champions and the 20 fastest American men in U.S. history. In all documented cases, sprinters were exceptional prior to initiating training, and most reached world class status rapidly (Study 1 median D 3 years; Study 2 D 7.5). In Study 3 we surveyed U.S. national collegiate championships qualifiers in sprintersn ( D 20) and throwers (n D 44). Sprinters recalled being faster as youths than did throwers, whereas throwers recalled greater strength and throwing ability. Sprinters’ best performances in their first season of high school, generally the onset of formal training, were consistently faster than 95–99% of their peers. Collectively, these results falsify the DPM for sprinting. Because speed is foundational for many sports, they challenge the DPM generally. Subjects Evolutionary Studies, Psychiatry and Psychology Keywords Expertise, Deliberate practice model of expertise, Athletic performance, Sprinting, Evolutionary psychology, Display, Talent, Running, Sports, Training Submitted 11 April 2014 Accepted 2 June 2014 “I can make you faster, but I can’t make you fast.” Published 26 June 2014 Jerry Baltes, Head Coach, Grand Valley State University cross-country and track and Corresponding author field Michael P.

  • Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S
Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida ties Texas A&M for title in first championship tie since 1978 -- It couldn’t have ended better for Florida. It couldn’t have ended worse for Texas A&M. Going into the final event Saturday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Texas A&M men held a nine-point lead ahead of second-place Florida in the team standings. That meant the Aggies would have to finish last in the 4x400 relay and the Gators would have to finish first in order for Texas A&M to lose sole possession of first place. And that’s exactly what happened. Going into the first handoff, Texas A&M runners Ricky Babineaux and Aldrich Bailey Jr. let the baton fall to the track. Babineaux picked it up, and the final three runners ran valiantly to try to catch up, but in the most improbable hypothetical coming to life, Texas A&M indeed finished the race last while Florida’s team crossed the line first. The two Southeastern Conference rivals each scored 53 points for the first shared NCAA title since 1978. Arkansas was third with 46.5. “The goal was for us to win the relay,” Florida coach Mike Holloway said. “I just told the guys, let’s go win the relay. We don’t see it as Texas A&M dropping the baton; we see it as we didn’t drop it. Success is where preparation meets opportunity. We had an opportunity, and we were prepared.” The result keeps the NCAA title in familiar territory: Texas A&M won three consecutive outdoor titles from 2009–11 before Florida won in 2012.
