  • The Presence of African Individuals in Punic Populations from the Island of Ibiza (Spain): Contributions from Physical Anthropology
ABSTRACT: The origin of the Punic population of Ibiza has been a much debated issue, not only in the field of anthropology, but in archaeology as well. The establishment of rural settlements and the apparent demographic growth throughout the island, especially from the 4th century BC onwards, has been mainly recognised as the result of a colonization process involving a large-scale immigration of people.

Troops from a United Nations peacekeeping force on the Israeli-Lebanese border mingle with tourists exploring the Phoenician ruins in Tyre, Lebanon, July 29, 2017. Photo by Jon Gambrell for AP The wealth of Phoenician cities such as Tyre, Sidon and Byblos was based on trade. Indeed, it was the search for new goods and new markets that caused the Phoenicians to found colonies. Phoenician civilization first developed in the Levant. The Levant is an area that today includes the states of Lebanon, Syria and Israel. From the 10th century B.C. onward, Phoenicians branched out from this homeland. They colonized territories throughout the ancient Mediterranean. Sailing And Trading The Phoenicians were not only excellent traders. They were skilled navigators as well. They traveled widely and established colonies wherever they went. The major Phoenician trade routes were by sea to the Greek islands, across southern Europe, down the Atlantic coast of Africa, and up to ancient Britain. Trade and the search for valuable goods led to the founding of trading posts. Over time, these sites grew. Their populations became larger. More and more buildings were erected. The Phoenician colonization of the Mediterranean happened in stages. Sometime between the 12th and eighth centuries B.C., various small trade centers were established.

  • Nuria Miro Was Born in Alcoy, Alicante, Spain in 1961, a Region That Is Famous for Its Artistic Heritage
MIRO Nuria Miro was born in Alcoy, Alicante, Spain in 1961, a region that is famous for its artistic heritage. She studied at the School of Arts in her hometown, and later moved to the College of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, Spain. As she pursued her artistic career in Spain, it was clear she had an artistic vision that was emotive in nature. She is most well-known for her beach scenes with three-dimensional human figures as well as her depictions of technicolor houses of Ibiza, a Spanish island off the Mediterranean coast. The island is famous for its clear waters, rocky shores, and hidden coves bathed by the sun. Ibiza has recently become a popular tourist spot for the cultured elite, including a number of celebrities, atheletes, and professionals. Though Ibiza thrives off of its expansive tourist industry, Miro paints a vacated cluster of homes that evoke a quietude of place and time. The tourist spot not only offers a safehaven of earthly delights; its Mediterranean beauty speaks to the artist soul with its shimmering light and bright color palette. Miro is a painter of high quality, sensitivity, emotion, and poetry. Her works are highly expressive in brushstrokes, reflective of pristine colors, and precise in linework, all coalescing to form a play of light and shadow of her condensed spaces. The compositions of each of her works are heightened by interesting new perspectives of the architectural landscape. The architecture in her work in a key element, for it conveys the physical and metaphorical stability and structure of the Ibizan land.

FaSTEn. I EGINNING about the year 1500, and for a period of over three centuries, B Spanish culture was forcibly exported and brought into contact, in a planned and guided manner, with a variety of very different cultures, particu larly American Indian and Philippine. The complete, thorough, and internally consistent philosophy of Spanish conquest and rule marks it off as quite a different thing from colonizing activities of other European countries of the same period. This philosophy was instrumental in producing a carefully con ceived and meticulously planned colonial policy which had as its goal the extension of Spanish culture and culture values to all parts of the world where it was physically possible. One result of the Spanish venture has been a fortuitous combination of circumstances which offers unequalled opportunities for the student of culture processes. In a sense, Spain and the areas she dominated, in their historical, geographical, and cultural aspects, afford a near-laboratory setup for certain types of social science research. To a degree rarely characteristic of the raw materials of the social sciences, significant factors are relatively constant. The effect of these constant factors can be observed over a long period of time under varied cultural and geographical conditions, and the end results ana lyzed.
