skin in the game BEAUTY Julie Morgan chats with Chris Salgardo, President of Kiehl’s Since 1851 and author of the upcoming style “man”-ual MANMADE. first met Chris when we were covering the map with makeup goddess Bobbi Brown. I knew even then that he was going places. Today, he is the President of I Kiehl’s Since 1851 in the United States. He knows as much as anyone in the biz about what makes men look good and, just as important, what makes them feel confident. Now he’s collected all his best tips, life hacks, and grooming secrets for guys in his first book. I got the lowdown on how guys can put their best game face forward. Julie Morgan: What made you write MANMADE? Chris Salgardo: I can’t tell you how many times guys have come up to me in one of my stores or on the street or at the gym with a skincare or grooming question they’ve been struggling with and didn’t know who to ask. I’m honored that I can be that person, so I started thinking about how I could put all of that information out there in a safe and straightforward way so guys had a manual with all the answers to the questions they didn’t want to ask. JM: Face oil or moisturizer? Which do you recommend? CS: Both. Face oils are a great delivery system for essential oils that help improve texture and tone, and moisturizers are essential to keeping skin hydrated. To simplify the process, you can use a moisturizer with SPF (like Kiehl’s Facial Fuel SPF 15) during the day and a face oil at night. You can also use a face oil in your beard to soften it; I use Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate in mine! JM: Speaking of facial hair, what does a man’s beard style say about him? CS: It says so much. That’s something I talk about in MANMADE. Your outside appearance is a great way to reflect who you are. It doesn’t mean that it should be all consuming, but presenting the best version of yourself lets other people know that you put forth an effort. THAT'S KIEHL'S PRESIDENT CHRIS SALGARDO EVERY GUY SHOULD OWN A COPY OF THIS AND MAKEUP ARTIST JULIE MORGAN DURING GROOMING GUIDE WHICH HITS SHELVES THEIR BOBBI BROWN DAYS! DECEMBER 1, 2015. JM: Does a man need a hair stylist, or is a barber fine for most guys? CS: The truth is most guys need both. A stylist will be able to help determine the best cut and shape for you. A barber can help maintain that cut and shape between stylist visits. JM: What is the best way to maintain facial skin when you have a beard? CS: I’m glad you asked that because I think sometimes men forget that there’s skin underneath their beards. That skin needs the same moisturizer and sun protection the rest of your skin does. JM: Is it okay to use shampoo for cleansing facial hair or is facial cleanser the best? CS: Well, like we just talked about, there’s skin under that beard, so facial cleanser is ideal. JM: Do you recommend any cosmetic products for men? CS: Concealer. Even the best skincare product can’t make hereditary dark circles disappear. If they bother you, you have to cover them up. JM: If you lost your luggage while traveling and had to dash to the drugstore, what products would you buy? CS: Definitely a moisturizer. Keeping your skin hydrated is the first step in healthy skin. If you’re traveling somewhere you’re going to be outside or somewhere particularly sunny, SPF protection of at least 50 is a must. JM: Any fragrance rules of thumb for men? CS: Never let your fragrance enter the room before you do. Follow Julie @foxyfleet. MANMADE hits shelves December 1, 2015.■.
