Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, July 3, 8 p.m. • Acres: 2,794 • Location: Near Mahogany Grove Campground between Kyle and Lee Canyon • Start Date: June 28th • Cause: Human • Containment: 76% • Personnel: 396

Las Vegas, NV, July 3, 2020 – Crews on the Mahogany Fire made progress on line building again today, increasing containment to 76%. The fire remains at 2,794 acres with 396 personnel assigned.

Fire behavior was minimal across most of the fire area. Hotspots actively burned south of the Deer Creek Spur Road and northeast of Angel peak along the south flank of the fire. Steep terrain along the south flank of the fire continues to present challenges and safety risks for firefighters as the work to build containment lines continue.

Firefighters will work through the Fourth of July weekend to further secure and improve containment lines and conduct mop-up. Weather is forecast to be stable over the weekend, which should limit fire growth.

Representatives from the local department of transportation expect increased travel through or in the vicinity where crews work and camp. Fire officials urge the public to be aware of fire personnel, vehicles and helicopters in the area as they travel through the area. To ensure the safety of crews, State Route 158 (Deer Creek Rd) and SR156 (Lee Canyon Rd) at the intersection of SR158 will remain closed. The public is asked to avoid the area around the fire if possible.

Updates on road closures are available from the Department of Transportation at https://www.nevadadot.com/.

Mahogany fire and local officials established plans for fire personnel to support local response should the need arise. An increase in fire starts is expected over the weekend. Fire managers on the Mahogany Fire can support local fire service agencies by providing engines, handcrews and helicopters if they are requested. Fire officials ask the public to exercise caution and follow all regulations when discharging fireworks to prevent fires from igniting. The public is reminded that fireworks are illegal on U.S. Forest Service lands.
