2018/2019 St. Lawrence Annual Report 2019 2 0 1 8 / 2 0 1 9 ANNUAL REPORT THE YEAR IN REVIEW SAINT LAWRENCE CATHOLIC CHURCH www.catholicduluth.org FROM FR. RYAN The Annual Report for Saint Lawrence will reveal to you the great works we share in as a parish. Together we are building up our community and the Kingdom of God. The most striking number for me in this entire report is that we consecrated over 36,075 hosts for Holy Communion. Every occasion of someone receiving the Eucharist is a truly graced moment of being united to Jesus in the saving action of His death and resurrection. We believe that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist that we receive. That means you are united with the very physical presence of God when you receive the Eucharist. Much like the Ark of the Covenant in which the presence of God dwelt, every time a soul receives a Holy Communion in a state of grace they become a living ark, because the real presence of Jesus enters the body. The Eucharist is so true, good, and beautiful! You will see in these pages the great graces happening in our midst. Because of your love, giving, and prayers graces are flowing. You can be proud as a parishioner of the goodness in this report. Like the reading from Ezekiel 47 when the trickle of water flowing from the temple gradually becomes a life giving river, as a community of parishes life giving water is flowing. We are still the same community, but now in a reorganized structure. We are only at the beginning stages of a wonderful amount of life giving graces beginning to flow in refreshing ways. Allow these pages to be a point of reflection on how you are being fed by the life of the Sacraments and the Parish. Ask yourself how you can continue to share more abundantly in all of these graces. I am excited to share with you our first official Annual Report for Saint Lawrence Catholic Church. May God bless you and may Jesus Christ be praised! Peace in Christ, Fr. Ryan Moravitz Pastor St. Lawrence Annual Report (218) 722-2259 catholicduluth.org 01 BY THE NUMBERS DID YOU KNOW? Hosts Consecrated In a recent study from the Pew Research Center it was found that only 1/3rd of Catholics believe in the real presence of Jesus in the 36,075 Eucharist. Over the last year our community received Jesus' body, blood, soul, and divinity through Holy Communion 36,075 times! You may have been in a hospital, or had a loved one past away. Maybe you can no longer get to Mass and you long for Holy Communion. You or someone you know may have been in need of assistance and you were helped through a work of mercy, acted upon by someone in our parish community. You may be someone who has performed a work of mercy to someone in need. You may have served a meal on a cold winter day to someone who needed it, or visited someone who is sick or homebound. Maybe you helped at a funeral or brought Holy Communion to someone. Did you know your contribution to the Art Pulford fund helped a homeless mother and her children get out of the cold for a week this past winter, or helped put food on a number of tables in our community? Whether you needed a work of mercy or shared in one, you in the parish community have participated in the building up of the kingdom of God. Thank you. Our Parish Cluster Picnic kicked off our Year of Community and it was a wonderful and blessed day as our parish community celbrated together. We are excited to get this year started and look forward to the ways that God blesses the upcoming year. As you have read in this report, there is much to be proud of in our community. Our parishes make a large impact and in the year ahead we want to intentionally build upon the foundation that has been laid. We look to continue working together, sharing visions, and carrying out the mission of our parishes. Looking forward, you can see some of the ways we are planning to grow our community this year. We are creating a new parish cluster directory, providing more days of Adoration, and having a Lenten soup cook-off. We are excited to share these future opportunities and we will provide information about these and other upcoming events as they become available. A large part of the Year of Community is your participation in it. We invite you to intentionally invest in our parish community. If you don't know the family that sits in front of you at Mass, please introduce yourself. Perhaps you can invite people from the parish community over for dinner or stay a couple extra minutes after Mass and socialize. We want you to be an initiating force for the year of community. Together we can accomplish great things and together we will. Parish Cluster Picnic We had a great kick-off to our year of community with the Parish Cluster Picnic on August 11th. During a time of change and the closing of St. Joseph's Church we were all able to come together, get to know one another, and celebrate as a community. This was a true example of building our parish community and we look forward in anticipation to the positivity and enthusiasm this brought to our parishes. We hope all who attended enjoyed the day and had the opportunity to meet members of our parish community. Thank you to all of the 600+ people who attended and look forward to it again next year! St.

  • Homily for August 8, 2021
Homily for August 8, 2021 “…unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” There are two famous sayings we have from Saint Lawrence. I think maybe we might get tired of hearing them, but then I realize some people will be hearing them for the first time. [From the OSV’s Encyclopedia of Saints, Revised] Saint Lawrence was a deacon of Rome and an aide to Pope Saint Sixtus the Second, “…who followed that pontiff in suffering. One of seven such deacons, Lawrence was probably born in Huesca, Spain. Ambrose wrote that Lawrence was overcome with grief when Sixtus the Second was put to death but rejoiced when told that the pope had said that Lawrence would follow him into martyrdom in three days. When the Roman authorities demanded the treasures of the Church, Lawrence showed them the poor and crippled.” That is where we hear the first of his famous remarks, “These are the treasures of the Church.” Aquí escuchamos la primera de sus famosos comentarios: "Estos son los tesoros de la Iglesia". Because Lawrence said this, rather than turning over what the Authorities thought were vast amounts of riches, he was place on a red-hot grill, where he made his other famous reply. [From the New Catholic Encyclopedia] The joke he made to the judge while being tortured to death by being roasted alive on the gridiron is, in Latin, “Assam est; versa, et manduca!” Which is translated “It is well done; turn it over and eat it,” or “He is roasted, turn him and eat him.” Prudentius reported that Lawrence’s example of faithfulness and humor in death led to the conversion of a Roman.

  • 2020-08-10 Saint Lawrence
Saint Paul tells us, “He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever” (2 Cor 9:9). The Psalmist tells us, “Lavishly he gives to the poor, his generosity shall endure forever; his horn shall be exalted in glory” (112:9). Both of these readings were selected for the Memorial of Saint Lawrence, a deacon from the third century when the church was under persecution. The Emperor of the Roman Empire, Valerian, had little tolerance for Christians. If they did not make sacrifices to Roman gods, then the priests faced banishment. Finding great resistance among the clergy, he exerted more pressure and ordered the execution of Pope Sixtus II and 4 deacons on the 6th of August. Deacon Lawrence was willing to die on that day and begged the pope, “If I distribute the Precious Blood of our Lord at the altar, why may I not offer my own blood this day as a martyr?” Pope Sixtus II assured him his time of martyrdom would come soon enough. As a deacon in Rome working directly with Pope Sixtus II, Lawrence held a position of trust caring for the temporal goods of the Church … serving the poor by providing alms to help them. He was also an archdeacon often serving alongside the pope at important liturgies. Before his death, Pope Sixtus II ordered a distribution of all that was possible to assist the poor. Soon enough, Deacon Lawrence was taken into custody and asked to surrender the wealth of the church. The persecutors wanted gold and fine jewels.

  • Feast of St Lawrence - Patron Saint of Archivists (August 10)
FEAST OF ST LAWRENCE - PATRON SAINT OF ARCHIVISTS (AUGUST 10) Saint Lawrence was one of seven deacons who were in charge of giving help to the poor and the needy. When a persecution broke out, Pope St Sixtus was condemned to death. As he was led to execution, Lawrence followed him weeping, "Father, where are you going without your deacon?" he said. "I am not leaving you, my son," answered the Pope. "In three days you will follow me." Full of joy, Lawrence gave to the poor the rest of the money he had on hand and even sold expensive vessels to have more to give away. The Prefect of Rome, a greedy pagan, thought the Church had a great fortune hidden away. So he ordered Lawrence to bring the Church's treasure to him. The Saint said he would, in three days. Then he went through the city and gathered together all the poor and sick people supported by the Church. When he showed them to the Prefect, he said: "This is the Church's treasure!" In great anger, the Prefect condemned Lawrence to a slow, cruel death. The Saint was tied on top of an iron grill over a slow fire that roasted his flesh little by little, but Lawrence was burning with so much love of God that he almost did not feel the flames. In fact, God gave him so much strength and joy that he even joked. "Turn me over," he said to the judge. "I'm done on this side!" And just before he died, he said, "It's cooked enough now." Then he prayed that the city of Rome might be converted to Jesus and that the Catholic Faith might spread all over the world.

  • Saint Lawrence
Saint Lawrence SAINT OF THE DAY 10-08-2020 The figure of Saint Lawrence (†258), deacon and martyr, has over the centuries been a source of inspiration for artists and poets, from Titian to Giovanni Pascoli, and an object of great devotion among the faithful. Tradition reports that he was born in Huesca, Spain. After his theological studies he moved to Rome, distinguishing himself for his great sense of the sacred and his charity. Sixtus II, elected to the papal throne on 30 August 257, appointed him archdeacon, a figure who was in charge of the diocesan administration, coordinated the activities of the other deacons, and helped widows, the poor and the sick. Valerian reigned over the empire; in the middle of the summer of 258 he issued his second edict against Christians, aimed in particular at attacking the clergy, as Saint Cyprian of Carthage, martyred in September of that same year, wrote in a letter: “The emperor Valerian sent his rescript to the Senate with which he decided that bishops, priests and deacons be immediately put to death”. The imperial edict was immediately executed in Rome, where on 6 August the soldiers surprised Sixtus II while he was celebrating the Eucharist in the catacombs of St. Callistus and on the same day beheaded the Holy Father and six deacons (Januarius, Vincent, Magnus, Stephen, Felicissimus and Agapetus, the last two buried in the nearby catacombs of Pretestato). Of the entire deacon's college of Rome, only Lawrence remained alive, spared because the emperor expected him to hand over the treasures of the Church, with the promise to save his life.

  • Every Year in the Liturgy of the Hours, on the Feast Day of Saint Lawrence, the Office of Readings Offers a Homily by Saint Augustine
Homily for August 9, 2020 My Brothers and Sisters: Every year in the Liturgy of the Hours, on the Feast Day of Saint Lawrence, the Office of Readings offers a homily by Saint Augustine. Two Years ago we put that in the Bulletin. I think it would be a very good Homily for this Year. And so, as I sometimes do, I step aside and use the words of one of the great preachers and teachers in the Church’s history to speak of God on the Feast of a Great Martyr, and Our Patron. From a sermon by Saint Augustine, bishop The Roman Church commends to us today the anniversary of the triumph of Saint Lawrence. For on this day he trod the furious pagan world underfoot and flung aside its allurements, and so gained victory over Satan's attack on his faith. As you have often heard, Lawrence was a deacon of the Church at Rome. There he ministered the sacred blood of Christ; there for the sake of Christ's name he poured out his own blood. Saint John the apostle was evidently teaching us about the mystery of the Lord's Supper when he wrote: Just as Christ laid down his life for us, so we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. My brethren, Lawrence understood this and, understanding, he acted on it. Just as he had partaken of a gift of self at the table of the Lord, so he prepared to offer such a gift. In his life he loved Christ; in his death he followed in his footsteps.
