  • Targa Florio Winner in the Porsche 908
Gerhard Mitter – Targa Florio winner in the Porsche 908 Gerhard Mitter was one of the greatest racing drivers Germany has ever produced. A Porsche works driver who took three European Hill Climb Championship titles, he suffered a fatal accident shortly before his planned move to Formula One. In the 1960s, the European Hill Climb Championship was one of the premier competitions in motor sport. The most successful driver of the era was Gerhard Mitter, who had been recruited to the Porsche works team to replace the late Edgar Barth. Mitter emulated Barth in taking three European Hill Climb Championship titles and even surpassed the achievements of his predecessor by winning them in consecutive years. In 1966, 1967 and 1968, he triumphed against rival entries from Ferrari, BMW and Abarth – and successfully fended off his ambitious teammate Rolf Stommelen in the latter two seasons. The cars that took him to these victories were primarily the Porsche 906 Carrera 6 and various versions of the Porsche 910. With his ability to focus all his energy and concentration on a period of a few short minutes, Mitter became one of the most dominant racers in the mountains. In 1969, Mitter was among the drivers who entered into Porsche legend by steering the company to its first ever title in the International Championship for Makes. He went on to record his greatest victory in the May of that year, taking first place at the Targa Florio – part of the World Sportscar Championship – with Udo Schütz in the Porsche 908. Within the large works team, Gerhard Mitter was the first point of contact for the engineering team around Peter Falk.

  • Porsche 919 Hybrid English.Indd
Porsche 919 Hybrid Return to top-level sport Porsche is making its comeback to the top-level motorsport arena: with the new 919 Hybrid the sports car brand is sending a platform for pioneering technology to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the undisputed seasonal highlight of the 24-hour Le Mans race. Porsche's reputation precedes it at this venue: with 16 overall victories under its belt, the brand holds the record for this, the most famous endurance race in the world. In 2014 Porsche is returning to the top-level class endurance race after a 16-year absence - namely Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG explains: "The new and revolutionary efficiency regulations for this class were what prompted us to take this step. In 2014 it is not going to be the fastest contender who is going to win the sports car world championship and Le Mans, but the car that gets furthest with the defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that the automotive industry has to face. The 919 Hybrid is like a high speed research laboratory and the most complex racing car Porsche has ever built." The new WEC regulations for the LMP1 racing car gives engineers an unusual amount of leeway and demands pioneering technology, such as hybridisation, downsizing engines and consistent lightweight construction. This is all particularly relevant for the development of future generations of factory-spec sports cars. Maximum sporting performance and highest efficiency are at the heart of "Porsche Intelligent Performance".

1968 - Porsche 908 Works Short-Tail Coupe Make: Porsche Model: 908 Year: 1968 Location: USA Type: Coupé Chassis Number: 908-010 Drive: RHD Road Registered: No Competition Ready: Yes FIA HTP: Yes Exterior Color: White Price: P.O.A. Key Features One of five 908s with short-tail coupe bodywork Porsche team entry at the 1968 Spa 1000km Raced by legendary drivers Vic Elford and Jochen Neerpasch Original factory chassis, fresh factory 908 engine Star attraction and entry for all historic events around the world including Le Mans Classic Description We are delighted to offer this extremely rare factory built 1968 Porsche 908 “Kurz Heck” (Short-Tail) Coupe with chassis number 908-010 for sale on behalf of its long-term owner. The Porsche 908 was introduced in 1968 to continue the Porsche 906/Porsche 910/Porsche 907 series of models designed under Ferdinand Piech. As the FIA had announced rule changes for Group 6 Prototype-Sports Cars limiting engine displacement to 3000 cc, Porsche designed the 908 as the first Porsche sports car to have an engine with the maximum size allowed. The previous Porsche 907 only had a 2200 cc Type 771/1 flat-8 engine developing 270 hp. The new 3-litre Type 908 flat-8 air-cooled boxer engine produced 257 kW (350 hp) at 8400 rpm. The 908 originally was a closed coupe to provide low drag at fast tracks but from 1969 on was mainly raced as the 908/2, a lighter open spyder. A more compact 908/3 was introduced in 1970 to complement the heavier Porsche 917 on twisty tracks that favored nimble cars, like Targa Florio and Nürburgring.

  • The Magnificent Four Imagine You’Re at the Targa Florio
newsroom History May 10, 2017 The magnificent four Imagine you’re at the Targa Florio. And imagine the heroes of yore – Elford, Linge, van Lennep and Steckkönig – were driving once more. In a Porsche, of course. In 2016 they did it again. Herbert Linge At 88 years of age, it is not everyone who can still change their shoes standing up. Herbert Linge can. With one hand propped on a bale of straw, he pulls the old loafer from his right foot and slips on a “brand new” old racing shoe. Then comes the left. They are quite special shoes – made by his old friend Francesco “Ciccio” Liberto. The shoemaker from Cefalù knows almost all of the old warriors, and many racing drivers had tailor-made, soft, slim pairs made by the gifted leather worker years ago. Linge had three pairs. Two of them wore out in endless high-speed battles, but one pair he has preserved. So far he has worn them just one time – for the film shoots for Steve McQueen’s epic “Le Mans”. And now again today: Once more he is driving an original section of the Targa Florio, once the wildest and most dangerous road race in the world. In an old, distinguished car – the Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder. For special occasions some people like to slip on a suit and tie – Linge prefers his new old shoes.
