The Glasgow School of Art Oration for Andy Bow Andy Bow Sir Norman Foster once said, “As an architect you design for the present, with an awareness of the past and for a future which is essentially unknown.” Andy Bow is a senior partner in Foster and Partners, arguably the world’s most consistently innovative post war architectural practice. Since its inception in 1963, the practice has won an unprecedented number of international awards and competitions. Its output ranges from city masterplans to door handles; from yachts and bridges to light fittings. Few practices have embraced the uncertainties of the future so positively and with such confidence. Andy Bow has always displayed the key qualities of the very best Mac graduate; a sense of adventure and unbounded energy, a predisposition to collaboration, a passion for drawing, a generous spirit and the ability to remain close to both local roots and international horizons. These were all in evidence when, shortly after graduating and in collaboration with his long-standing friends and current Mac tutors Ian Alexander and Henry McKeown, they won the prestigious Manhattan Waterfront Competition. Chancellor, Andy Bow was born in 1961 in Edinburgh. He attended George Watson’s College, Telford College of Further Education and the Mackintosh School of Architecture at the Glasgow School of Art. Like myself, he chose to mix practice and education by joining the Mac’s part time course; a heady mixture of daytime office responsibilities and evening classes. When he eventually became a full time student, his studio design reviews quickly attracted attention. The potent mixture of his astonishing drawings and memorable exchanges with staff, particularly professors Andy McMillan and the late Isi Metzstein became must –see events for his fellow students. -

Demolition of guyed masts is usually carried out by cutting down some of the supporting guy cables using an explosive in such a way that the mast can fall into the desired direction. Without the cable supports, guyed tubular masts are very slender structures which are susceptible to local buckling based on the internal force distribution. If this local buckling occurs at the early stage of the demolition processes, it can cause uncertainty in the failure mechanism. )e risk of undesirable demolition outcome due to this uncertainty can be mitigated by using controlled detonation setups. In this paper, a sensitivity analysis is presented using a case study to determine the influence of the explosive detonation time on the collapse development and pattern of the guyed mast. )en, the results of the sensitivity analysis are systematically categorized using cluster analysis to show possible types of collapse regimes which can be used to setup a controlled demolition scheme. -

Given the availability of many alternative solutions for different facets of a building’s design and construction systems, the need exists for an evaluation framework that is comprehensive in scope, transparent as to the basis for decisions made, reliable in result, and practical in application. Findings from the literature reviewed combined with a deep understanding of the evaluation process of skyscraper systems were used to identify the components and their properties of such a framework, with emphasis on selection of categories, perspectives, criteria, and sub-criteria, completeness of these categories and perspectives, and clarity in the language, expression and level of detail used. The developed framework divided the evaluation process for candidate solutions into the application of three integrated filters. The first filter screens alternative solutions using two-comprehensive checklists of stakeholder acceptance and local feasibility criteria/sub-criteria on a pass-fail basis to eliminate the solutions that do not fit with local cultural norms, delivery capabilities, etc. The second filter treats criteria related to design, quality, production, logistics, installation, and in-use perspectives for assessing the technical performance of the first filter survivors in order to rank them. -

By surveying past, present as well as possible future towers, this paper examines another attribute of these structural systems - the blend of structural functionality and aesthetics. Given the external nature of these structural systems, diagrids and exterior bracings can visually communicate the inherent structural logic of a building while also serving as a medium for artistic effect.
