£1.00 Welcome to Stag Meadow

Windsor F.C. v Burnham F.C. Saturday 25th November 2017 Kick Off 3:00pm Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Stag Meadow for todays HLP match against Burnham.

I offer a warm welcome to our visitors and trust supporters, players and officials have had a trouble free journey across the Relief Road.

I extend that welcome to our match day officials and again hope Messrs Parkinson, Wilkins & Maxwell enjoy their very brief stay with us in The Great Park.

We welcome back some very familiar faces today; let’s hope both Jeffers (Kyle Jeffrey) and Rio (Omar Riaz) are on top form. You will recognise other names and faces but with Alan Paris still assessing his squad it’s too risky for me to mention too many names!

We have two fixtures this coming week, after today. On Monday we make the trip over to Woodley United for a league cup tie. Next Saturday we have the 3rd Round Vase tie away at Walton & Hersham.

Travel information for both games can be found in this issue.

Finally, a reminder that fixtures are fairly fluid in the Hellenic League, so as much as we try and keep them accurate in the programme, please refer to the football club Twitter account for to-the-minute updates! @windsorfc

Enjoy the game Matt

The end of our winning run was inevitable, I just never expected it to end on Tuesday night. The three matches against Abingdon, Burnham and Woodley were/are dangerous fixtures.

There was always the possibility of getting bitten on the backside and Ash and I stressed this to the boys. Preparation is the key and I just felt that on Tuesday night we were not right from the moment we walked through the gates.

Abingdon showed more hunger and desire to win the match.

That said, if Joash’ free kick had nestled in the back of the net at 2-1 up, we probably would have gone on to win the match.

Overall, no complaints about the result though. We take it on the chin and move onto today’s match.

The message today is the same. Our preparation has to be spot on and we must show that we want to win the match more than our opposition.

We will have the opportunity to re-introduce some players into the starting line up today now that suspensions and injuries have cleared, and we would hope anyone coming in would take that opportunity to impress.

I’m hoping we’ll all enjoy the game today,

Mick

Windsor Observer reporter Rob Stevens managed to catch up with marauding midfielder Jack Denton last weekend.

Here’s what Jack had to say on the back of scoring the winning goal against Erith in the FA Vase.

It was Jack’s 8th goal in 20 appearances since his move from Reading in the Summer.

"I don't know what it is this season but in the Vase we've been playing with a lot of confidence and just feel that we can beat anyone, It just seems to be working out for us so we will just keep building on that.”

"Personally and collectively it just feels that no matter what the score is we always believe we can grind out a result.

"That's the best thing for a team really, having that belief that no matter what happens in a game. We just always feel that we can come out with a win.“

Jack continued: "Coming from Reading I was not really much of an attacking player. I was more defensive so it's all a bit new to me really, attacking and scoring goals.

"I'm just going with it and see what I can do, but take every game as it comes.

"I'm getting a lot of joy because quite often I start out wide but as I drop to come more central the full-backs don't really want to follow me in.

"That's especially the case with the pace of Nadir Shafi and the physicality of Barry Hayles. It stretches teams quite a lot and leaves pockets for me to get on the ball.“

Page 12 – Windsor Observer Sports Desk Catch Up with Jack Denton

Looking back on the FA Vase second round win at Erith, the Windsor midfield star said;

"Erith definitely showed signs that they could play but overall we deserved to win. "We started off a little sloppy but then started to really build on the game.

In the second-half we tried to go with a bit more of a different strategy, be more direct and try to play off Barry.”

"That seemed to work out and both the goals came from crosses. My one was a knock down from Barry so the change in plan seemed to work for us. "The goal from Nadir was definitely a morale booster for us just because we knew we could then break Erith down.

"It was a bit frustrating with them scoring so quickly, but we definitely knew that we could eventually score another one. We knew we had it in us." Jack

Maidstone United call on council to make u-turn on sale of land

Maidstone United have requested that Maidstone Borough Council ‘rethink’ their decision to reject a tabled offer placed on land owned by the local authority.

As part of their plans to regenerate the west side of their home at the Gallagher Stadium, the Stones would need to buy a two metre wide strip of land that serves as a public pathway.

Hoping to avoid drastically altering their capacity development blueprints, the club’s co-owner Terry Casey explained: “This is a big disappointment as we have been in discussion and negotiation with the council for almost a year.

“It means we will have to produce yet more drawings and calculations and it may jeopardise our application to be allowed to compete in the play-offs and ultimately to be eligible to join the Football League.

“The football club went to great lengths to offer a fair market price but Maidstone Borough Council, despite agreeing the land is surplus to requirements, insisted that they would only offer a lease agreement, as they deemed the strip to be ‘strategic’ and wanted to retain control.

“If we were to agree to a lease we would always be at the mercy of the council and it would make it impossible to raise financing for the future. We don’t feel that this is a fair and reasonable position for the club to be put into. It is deeply disappointing in terms of trust and support that the officers said they disagreed with our arguments.

“Regrettably it appears, yet again, that Maidstone Borough Council does not understand or appreciate what Maidstone United Football Club means to the town. We urge them to reconsider and are lobbying for the freehold sale option to be given due consideration.”

After three promotions in four years the Stones plan to expand their 5,000 capacity through land on the west side at a cost of over £600,000.

Respect. It's been banded around in football over recent years. The FA have rolled out initiatives, programmes and campaigns. We've all seen the shirt sleeve logos and centre circle banners?

Respect comes in many forms though, and I'm arguing that the Football Association themselves are showing little or no respect to clubs at our current level (you could probably pull the level above into that).

Our league fixtures were announced less than 10 days before the scheduled start of the season. Less than 10 days. Think about that.

The phrase "If you fail to prepare then prepare to fail" comes to mind.

Since the fixtures were given to our club secretary I must have seen at least three amendments to the fixture list.

I spotted league fixtures on consecutive days in December and we currently will play one team on consecutive weekends - home and away. That'll be down to the speed at which the league themselves feel they have to put a fixture list together, not having had time to check, re-check and consult.

The league season finishes around the first weekend in May...if clubs are appealing points deductions or ground issues (which tends to be the reasoning behind league constitution delays) after that weekend then the system has failed.

The Football Association needs to show some respect and allow clubs such as ours time to prepare for a season.

Fixture lists, posters, season tickets and programmes all need time to prepare and print. The less time given, the more cost and inconvenience incurred.

It's simply unfair and unnecessary.

Hi Stag Fans!!

Hopefully I might see you around the ground at some point this season………Here’s hoping !!

Black Friday, now what is that all about ? You should try living in Windsor Great Park during Winter. Every day is black for longer than not ! Do you reckon the Royal Borough might be game for putting some street lights up in the Great Park ? It would certainly help !!

Now when something needs explaining then the next port of call is my Dad. Dad tells me that Black Friday is the day that marks the start of Christmas Shopping season in America and is also the day after the big Thanksgiving Holiday. Apparently it’s “Black” because of the amount of traffic and general chaos that used to occur. How daft is that ?

I’m going to campaign for Saturday 18th Nov to be installed as Black Saturday. A perfectly good Saturday for football and our fixture gets cancelled. All the fans are left at home kicking their heels. Now that’s a black day indeed !!

Slough continued their fine league run with a comprehensive win over Weymouth at Arbor Park in front of a crowd of 923.

Goals from George Wells, James Dobson and substitute Josh Jackman were enough to see of their South Coast Opponents.

Maidenhead United secured a well-earned point at Woking to stop a run of defeats. Adrian Clifton put the Magpies ahead after 10 minutes but were pegged back just before the break. Maidenhead had chances in the second half, but couldn’t break down a strong Woking back line.

Bracknell Town were the Pontoon coupon busters, scoring nine goals last weekend in the Hellenic League Cup. Cheltenham Saracens were the victims this time. The final score 9-2!

Flackwell Heath, with former Windsor FC player Marcus Richardson now at the helm, drew 1-1 at home to Abingdon United, who snatched an injury time equalizer to deny Richardson’s new boys.

Charlie Samuel had given Flackwell the lead.

Burnham conceded five goals in the final 17 minutes to lose 8-0 at Brackley Town Saints, despite only trailing 1-0 at the break. The blues were reduced to ten men with only minutes on the clock in the 2nd half.

Jordan Brown and Jahson Downes scored for Marlow in an entertaining draw against Bedford Town. Downes equalizer coming in the 90th minute in front of a crowd of 98.

Page 31 – Kindly Sponsored by Thames Fiat UEFA Nations League Uefa unveils format for new Nations League to start in September 2018

• 55 European national teams split into four groups based on rankings • To replace most friendlies will play part in Euro 2020 qualifying

Uefa has confirmed which teams are in each of the four leagues for the inaugural Nations League, European football’s new international competition intended to replace most friendlies.

Based on the coefficient rankings after the group stages of the European qualifiers for Russia 2018, England, ranked sixth, are in League A, while Wales (14th), the Republic of Ireland (19th) and Northern Ireland (21st) are in League B, and Scotland (27th) are in League C. All 55 Uefa nations are assigned to a league, with 12 teams in A and B, 15 in C and 16 in D.

At a draw in Lausanne on 24 January, each league will then be divided into four groups of either three or four nations and they will play each other home and away from September to November next year.

A promotion and relegation system will operate between the leagues – four up, four down – and the second edition of the competition is scheduled to start in September 2020.

The winners will be decided at a tournament between the nations that finish top of the four League A groups in June 2019, with semi-finals, a third-place match and a final to be held in one of the finalist countries.

Uefa has introduced the competition to revive international football with more competitive matches and to give countries more chances to play against teams of a comparable standard.

But many fans, players and pundits have expressed some confusion over the idea, particularly as it will run alongside qualifying for the 2020 European Championship.

Page 32 – Kindly Sponsored by Thames Fiat UEFA Nations League

That process will now begin in March 2019, with countries split into 10 groups of five or six, and the top two teams in each group qualifying for the finals. The major change, however, is that the final four places will be decided via play-offs between the winners of the 16 Nations League groups in 2018.

Each league – A to D – will have its own play-off competition with single-leg semi-finals and a final to decide who wins the place. The draw for those play- offs will take place in November 2019 and the play- offs themselves will occur in March 2020.

If the winners of a Nations League group have already qualified for Euro 2020 via the qualifying groups, their place in the play-off will go to the next best team in their Nations League group that has not secured a place.

If a league still does not have enough teams for a play-off, as is entirely possible for League A, the places will be filled by the best-ranked teams from the league below.

Uefa Nations League sections

League A Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, France, England, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Iceland, Croatia, Holland.

League B Austria, Wales, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Ukraine, Republic of Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Turkey.

League C Hungary, Romania, Scotland, Slovenia, Greece, Serbia, Albania, Norway, Montenegro, Israel, Bulgaria, Finland, Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania.

League D Azerbaijan, Macedonia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Liechtenstein, Malta, Andorra, Kosovo, San Marino, Gibraltar.

Club Nickname: United

Colours: Sky Blue & Grey

Ground Address: Rivermoor Stadium, Scours Lane, Reading, Berkshire, RG30 6AY

Ground Telephone Number: 0118 9453555

Directions Road: Come off J12 of the M4 head along the A4 towards Reading, take a left onto Langley Hill and follow it all the way up onto Park Lane, continue onto School Road past the Tilehurst shops and then down onto Kentwood Hill.

At the bottom of the hill take a right onto the Oxford Road towards Reading and just past the Waitrose Shop you need to take a left into an industrial estate and under the railway bridge and the ground will be in front of you to your right.

Train: It’s easy getting to Reading (via Slough), but the ground is a 2.5 mile walk from the Station, and that does involve walking down the Oxford Road. Your best bet would be to grab a cab from the station if you value your health and possessions!

Pubs: The Tylers Rest is probably the closest pub and is just over 1 mile away from the ground. You can grab some food there as well. It’s probably worth pub hopping in the Town Centre and then going straight to the ground by cab.

Founded in 1878, Burnham FC is the second oldest club Buckinghamshire. We played in the early years, with considerable success, in various leagues, before joining the Great Western Combination in 1948.

The 2012-2013 season without doubt was the most successful in the football clubs history.

The First Team won the Evo-Stik Southern League Southern & West Division One Central (Southern League) championship earning promotion to the newly sponsored Calor League Premier Division (Southern League) while our Reserves won the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division Two East championship at the first time of asking and themselves earned promotion to Division One East where they will now come up against the First Teams of many of last seasons opposition.

We moved to the Wycombe Combination in 1964 and then spent one season (1970/71) in the Reading Combination.

In 1971 the club were elected to the Hellenic League winning both the Premier Division and League Cup in 1975/76. We were also twice beaten finalists in the League Cup.

In 1977 the club were elected to the Athenian League and were twice runners-up before the league folded in 1984. We competed in the London Spartan League in 1984/85 winning both the Premier Division title and the League Cup.

The summer of 1985 bought about the amalgamation of the football club with Hillingdon Borough FC who had lost their ground and were about to fold.

We played in the Southern League as Burnham & Hillingdon FC but reverted back to the former name of Burnham FC in 1987. Season 1994/95 saw us finish bottom, resulting in relegation to the Hellenic League.

After 3 seasons in the Hellenic League finishing fifth, third and again third in 1998/99 the club won both the Premier Division title and the League Cup, thus gaining promotion back to the where we have played since.

Season 2006/07 saw the club achieve their highest league position, finishing 3rd, thus qualifying for the end of season Promotion Play-Off semi final, unfortunately losing to the eventual winners Swindon Supermarine.

In cup competitions Burnham reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase in 1977/78 and then went one better in reaching the Semi Final in 1982/83 losing over two legs to Halesowen Town by 4-2. In the home leg the clubs record attendance of 2400 was achieved.

We have twice reached the Third Qualifying round of the FA Cup and in 2005/06 reached the First Round Proper for the first time ever before losing at home to Aldershot Town.

In the FA Trophy we reached the Fourth Round (the last 16) in 1999/2000 before losing to Scarborough in a replay after a creditable 1-1 draw at The Gore.

In the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup we have reached the Semi Final twice before losing on both occasions to Chesham United.

Since the last time I wrote a piece for Matt at the end of October we have been on a bit of a whirlwind journey.

We defeated Newport Pagnell Town in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup tie here at Stag Meadow fairly comfortably with both the goals coming early in the first half for a 2-0 win.

Next up came a league fixture at home to Woodley United, another win, though the winning goal came deep into time added on at the end with a well taken spot kick from Luke Brooks-Smith.

We then went on the road on a Sunday, the traditional Sunday roast dinner had to wait until Monday. It was cold and very windy and we had a few missing. The bench consisted of Brad Pearce, Gus Bowles, Dan Roth and Ben Smyth.

The home team were very confident from the off, our boys were very professional throughout and thoroughly deserved the win.

Our supporters at the match (as always) were superb and everyone at the club and the management and players appreciated your support once again.

I had to write these few notes before the match last Tuesday with Abingdon United so am unable to comment on whether we go into today’s match looking for another win in what has been an exceptional run of winning matches.

The Windsor/Cox Green Academy u19s have had 3 excellent results of late, winning 5-0 here at Stag Meadow against Gosport Borough, again winning 5-4 away to Eastleigh Blues before drawing 0-0 with unbeaten Sutton United in the League Cup before losing the spot kick lottery 4-2.

The u18s had a mixed bag, firstly defeating Ascot United Yankees in the Berks & Bucks u18 Cup 4-0 before losing 6-2 to a very good Abbey Rangers side 6- 2 in the Allied Counties League Cup.
