THE CONSUMPTION OF CHEMICALS SHOULD BE DISCOURAGED IN FARMING AND FARMERS BE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE FORWARD ARTISTS GALLERY INDIGENOUS ORGANIC METHODS ?

Organic farming is inborn to India. Since 1966, with the inception of the Green Revolution in India, it has taken a backseat. The transition from traditional agriculture to modern agriculture shifted the objective of farming. The need to change the methods of farming to meet the demands of the growing population was inevitable. The stress was laid on severe agriculture practices which later proved harmful to the environment. The inability of Indian agriculture to meet the demand for food in the country during the two and half decades immediately after independence had been a matter of concern at those times. The system of our agriculture based on the traditional knowledge and practices handed down from generation to generation could not produce enough to feed the increasing population. The humiliation of our dependence for food on the western developed nations and the politics of food aid practiced by them added to our willpower to be self-sufficient in food production by modernising agriculture. The green revolution fulfilled our aspirations by changing India from a food importing to a food exporting nation. But farmers should use less HYV seeds because these contain many toxic materials which later becomes as crops and are eaten by humans, cattle’s etc. Whereas Organic farming is an agricultural system which originated early in the 20th century in reaction to rapidly changing farming practices. Organic farming methods combine scientific knowledge of ecology and some modern technology with traditional farming practices based on naturally occurring biological processes. Organic farming methods are studied in the field of agroecology. And mode of using organic farming is much better than using the chemicals that make humans health and personality degrade. Art By Art By Yogesh Dwivedy Kirti Bharti In the late 1960’s farmers of Western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana Punjab Bihar introduced the Green Revolution to increase the production of rice and wheat. Compared to the traditional methods HYV seeds promised greater amounts of grain on a single piece of land. The yields of wheat grown from traditional crops was up to 1300 kg per hectare but with the introducing of HYV seeds the production went up to 3200 kg per hectare. Many farmers were appreciated with yields of wheat but do you know that Punjab has the highest consumption level of HYV seeds in the whole India. Hectare is the standard measuring unit of land also called as bigha or guintha. But the story never finished over here the green revolution was associated with loss of soil fertility due to increase in chemicals. There was much of unemployed people in many villages. Continuous use of these seeds polluted the ground level water. Chemical fertilizers kill the microorganisms present in the soil. It means they also kill the good organisms present in the soil. When farmers use more chemicals, it increases the cost of cultivation. This modern farming decreases the originality of the crop. But instead of using such dangerous chemicals farmers can use mixed cropping. It is a type of cropping that helps the farmer to grow mixed crop in his field. Farmers can use multiple cropping that involves growing of more than one crop on a field in a particular time of the year. Farmers can cultivate kharif crops such as cotton, maize, rice etc in the month when monsoon rain begins and can also grow rabi crops such as peas, barley, gram etc around mid-November. Farmers can use good methods of irrigation like the Persian wheels or modern tools such as threshers, tractors, jeeps etc instead of traditional tools like ploughs or bullock carts. Government should also employ specialised people to give farmers knowledge about how to use different forms of farming to increase the production. HYV seeds or chemicals are not only the way to increase the production. There are many natural ways, the thing is just to find them out. Remember “Farmers are the backbone of our nation” so, providing them Art By Art By with knowledge is important. Md Shakeel Divyanshi Goyal **** Delhi Madhya Pradesh By Mehak Vijay Chawla New Delhi
