President’s Message:

Congregants and families of Temple Or Elohim, the buzz was that things were looking good and we were busy at the Temple throughout April. The first half of the month was filled with 5/6 grade class led services, Hebrew at its best. Thank you DOE Deborah Tract as B’nei Mitzvot and our band Nishamah turned services into a Shabbat worthy concert. Let’s not forget the masterful leadership at both services for Jacob Bock and Riley Leavitt, great going and very impressive.

I hope those who couldn’t attend our Temple Passover Seder will pencil in next year’s Seder in advance as Rabbi Harvey Abramowitz and Rebbetzin Joan A. lead us in a Judaic journey teaching us about our heritage and freedom. Another great year Yaasher Koach.

Our merger report is a good one, as minor things have been ironed out. CRT’s entire property is on the market and there has been great interest and many showings. Let’s hope it sells quickly. Cantor David and Rabbi Judy have already started High Holiday communication as have the Merger Ritual committee. There is lots to do. For all intentions and purposes, we will be ONE Temple family by July 1, 2019. Rabbi Judy is moving into the house on or about July 1, 2019 as well. I am extremely excited as I see a lot of great energy ready to burst forth as both clergy plan to lead us into the future. May success and hatzlachah be the future of this merger and may TOE & CRT minds meld into Judaic bliss as our new name will take hold and be…

Temple Or Elohim A Community Reform Congregation

I hope everyone had a great holiday Passover week away from stress and daily aggravation and are refreshed and ready for April showers to bring May flowers. From my family to yours, stay safe and watch your children….Amen.

Respectfully, Michael Wilner, President [email protected]

Cantor’s Message:

Welcome to Spring! Each year as we arrive at spring, we "pass" through the holiday of Passover. We simultaneously celebrate the arrival of spring and our freedom from the bondage and oppression our ancestors faced. I hope all of you had a wonderful Seder and Passover holiday with family and friends. Passover is the time when we reflect on how lucky we are to be able to have all the freedoms we experience day to day in this great country we live in.

This year, along with a number of congregants from our Temple, we celebrated Passover at the Long Island Islamic Center by attending an Interfaith Seder. The Seder was led by Rabbi Michael White of Roslyn and myself. Our own congregants who attended also participated and help set up, as well as made food for the event.

It was truly a very special event. This Seder was attended by people of all faiths including Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Jews and Sikhs. To see so many different faiths participating and celebrating the overall message of freedom was truly a blessing. As we all discussed and read about the oppression of the past of the Jewish people, it became very clear to everyone there that we as a human race are all in this together. That we all must, as humanity, help to make sure that ALL peoples are protected and valued no matter what their faith, beliefs or color of their skin.

During the Seder people shared their experiences of being in this country as they practiced their beliefs and lived their lives. They shared fears, as well as of hopes and desires that our world can be a better place than it is today for all people.

The whole afternoon was truly inspiring and gave us all a glimpse of what we can do when we come together, put down our differences and try to see what we have in common. Thank you to all of our congregants who attended and helped out. We could not have done it without you.

In May, just following Passover, we had our class services led by the children in our Hebrew School. These were incredible services! The children were fantastic as they led and shared their thoughts on Shabbat and the Torah Portion of the week. Mazel tov to all the parents of our children! Your participation and involvement are invaluable to the success of your children, as well as the future of our Temple. Thank you for being there for all of us. Also, a huge thank you goes out to all of our teachers and of course, Mrs. Tract. Mrs. Tract leads our school year after year with the most wonderful programing and contagious positive energy. We would not be the temple we are without her leadership and care for our kids.

And last but not least, I cannot express enough thanks and gratitude to all of you who on our concert committee led by Laurel Fried. You who made another concert the success it was. Your time and energy are so appreciated. Our concert is the biggest fund raiser of the year outside of Yom Kippur. Your help is crucial to making it happen.

And thank you to all of our generous sponsors who bought ads in the concert Journal. Each year you step up to help our cause; again, I cannot thank you enough.

A huge thanks is due to all those who helped me to make it through this year. Being the Rabbi and the Cantor for the entire year was eye opening, challenging, inspiring and incredibly rewarding. I thank you all for trusting me to lead our Temple in this way. It has been an amazing year and we did it altogether.

I hope all of you have a wonderful summer and enjoy times with family and friends. Relax and allow yourself to have some good laughs and lots of love. You deserve it!

B'shalom, Cantor David Katz [email protected] (516)433-9888 Ext. 12

Religious School:

Shalom Friends,

By the time you read this our 2019/20 school year will have come to an end. But, as I write this column, I am thinking about the final days of Religious School and what a terrific year this has been. Our children have been outstanding members of our school community. They have been a pleasure to work with and have conducted themselves appropriately throughout the year. Their hard work and commitment to learning has consequently led to phenomenal student-led Shabbat services. On Friday evening, May 3, 2019, our 4th graders led our congregation in worship and prayer. Their mature attitudes and presence on the Bema were a true testament of their dedication to Jewish learning. On May 17, 2019, we celebrated our 7th graders and our staff with a special Shabbat service. Several of our 7th grade young adults continued with their studies post Bat/Bar Mitzvah. Our teachers and our Teen Assistants are exceptional role models showing passion towards all of our children. Together, we work hard to ensure that our students’ time is well utilized with learning, out-of-the-box activities and success.

On May 01, 2017, our 7th grade students led a heartfelt Yom HaShoah service commemorating the six million that perished in the Holocaust. Three students delivered their own personal statements regarding their feelings about the Holocaust and Anti-Semitism today. Our sanctuary was filled with people who gathered together for unity. A survivor, Gloria Glantz, shared her emotional story of survival and her ongoing effort to maintain her recollection of her family, all of whom perished in the Holocaust. She spoke about the righteous acts of others that risked their lives to save her. Gloria is an inspiration.

On May 6, 2019, our 7th grade student Chase Brodsky received the Friedlander Upstander scholarship from the Holocaust Memorial Tolerance Center for her ongoing efforts against intolerance to bigotry and hatred. We are all so proud of Chase for her efforts.

We will be celebrating Israel’s 71st birthday during the final days of Religious School with games, fun and our very own, Greg’s Food Truck! Greg, Rich and Cliff always go above and beyond for our school. Their work ethic is exceptional and they keep our school maintained at all times.

At this time, I would like to thank Cantor David Katz for supporting our school’s efforts and for being the special person that he is. Together, we work to bring Judaism and Jewish learning to our Religious School, preparing all our students for a meaningful journey of lifelong Jewish learning. I am blessed to work with such a terrific being who gives 100% to our synagogue.

Familyhood, under the auspices of Jodi Breslin and Steve Finkelstein, has brought many wonderful activities to our school families. Their motivation and vision are assets to our synagogue. They are creative and innovative people!

Goldie and Nancy always have our school’s best interest with everything they do. They are my right-hand team and work with me on all aspects of the school’s happenings. By now, all of you know that our beloved Nancy will be retiring. On behalf of our school and parents, I thank her for all that she has done for Temple Or Elohim. She will be missed but will always be nearby.

I would like to extend my utmost appreciation to our band members, Dave Berg, Lenny Gerschitz and Our President, Michael Wilner for sharing their talents each Friday that our students led Shabbat service. These outstanding men gave their time to Rock n Roll at our services. Our children were thrilled with the sound of instruments and energy. Ed Stolarz, the organist who is at every Friday and Saturday service, is truly a “Mensch”. He makes himself available, putting everyone’s needs first. I am grateful for all that Ed does for our synagogue and school.

FAMILYHOOD EXTRA

Familyhood is so proud to be a strong part of this temple’s fabric. We offer families a place and space to engage, share and celebrate in fun traditions with each other. So, catch a ray. Just a single one for now.

Face the Sun by Steve Finkelstein

Face the sun. Catch a ray. Just a single one for now.

Standing on the fields. We glow. So warm. Cheering on. From dawn to dusk.

The rays win over the shadows. Shining in places and on faces. Arm in arm. Hand in hand. Smiling and learning.

What a place to be. Busy and bustling. Running and hustling.

This field is yours, too. Filled with rays to glow upon us. With nobody, rays share no warmth.

The strong team we could be. If we all stood arm in arm. Hand in hand.

Catch a ray. Just a single one for now.

June 21 Beha'alotcha (Numbers 8:1-12:16) This portion deals with the lighting of the 7-branched menorah by Aaron, observance of the 2nd annual Passover, the making of the two silver trumpets (shofrot), the three acts of opposition to Moses: the people's demanding meat in addition to , the breaking away of two of the elders of Israel and Moses’ confrontation with his siblings, Aaron & Miriam.

June 28 Sh’lach (Numbers 13:1 – 15:41) The famous story of the twelve spies sent to survey the land of in preparation of its conquest is told in this portion. Joshua and , the two remaining spies, oppose the negative majority report by the other ten spies. The anger of the people and their threat to return to Egypt is the catalyst for the decision by God that this people is not ready for the challenge of freedom and that their entire generation will have to live out their lives in the desert. Their children, the next generation, will be the ones who will enter the .

July 5 (Numbers 16:1-18:32) The chapter recounts the uprising against Moses by Korach and 250 members of the tribe of Reuben. They claimed that Moses was taking too much power for himself and they too were eligible for leadership positions. Moses was stunned; he had shared the leadership responsibility by spreading it among the 70 elders, judges, and tribal chiefs. The rebellion was put down when the earth opened and swallowed up Korach and all his followers.

July 12 Chukkat (Numbers 19:1-22:1) This portion expands on the laws of purification, and provides for the removal of defilement resulting from contact with the dead. The particulars of this ordinance are considered to be the most mysterious rites in the Torah.

July 19 Balak ( Numbers 22:2-25:9) The now enter the last stage of their journey to the Promised Land; they are within sight of the goal. As they prepare for the conquest of their new national home, a heathen prophet, Bilam, gives testimony to Israel's unique character and sublime destiny. He proclaims the futility of any attempts to foil the purposes of God regarding His chosen people.

July 26 Pinchas (Numbers 25:10-30:1)

This chapter recounts the misbehavior of many Israelites who had accepted the invitation of women of Moab and Midian and joined in their licentious rites in worship of the idol Baal-Peor. Filled with indignation, Pinchas, a Kohen, executed summary judgement on Zimri and Cozbi, the Israelites who misled so many.

August 2 Mattot/Masei (Num. 30:2-32:42 / 33:1-35:13) The first of these two chapters emphasizes the solemnity and binding character of religious vows, and specifies circumstances in which vows can be annulled. The second portion details the stages of the journey of the Israelites all the way from Egypt to the Plains of Moab.

August 9 (Deut. 1:1-3:22) The name of this Fifth Book and concluding ‘book’ of the Torah, and its title might well be “Moses Final Discourses and Song to Israel”. It is an oratory, given in noble language to the great truths that God is One, humankind is wholly His and that God is Righteousness, Faithfulness, Mercy and Love. In this chapter we find the central declaration of the Jewish people, the Shma.

August 16 Va-Etchanan (Deut. 3:23-7:11) Moses continues his review of the people’s history of interactions with God, discussing the signs of God’s favor to his people shown in their victories. He laments that he will be able only to view the land but would not be able to enter it and commits the future leadership of the people to Joshua, his successor.

August 23 Ekev (Deut. 7:12-11:25) The blessings inherent to those who obey the laws given in the Torah are detailed here, chief among them being prosperity, vitality, power and health. Moses includes an appeal to the Israelites to remember their history to motivate their fulfilling their fundamental duties to love God and observe His commandments

August 30 Re’eh (Deut. 11:26-16:17) “Behold, I set before you a blessing and a curse. The blessing (comes) if you observe the commandments of the Lord, Your God. The curse (comes) if you do not obey the commandments but ignore the way you have been given and choose to worship other gods”. With these challenging words, Moses reviews the Codes of Law to be observed by the people.
