Predictable fun a'la ERB by a fellow practicioner of the planetary romance.By Charles A. MadisonThis novel is one of the five planetary romances written by Kline in the 1930s. Kline is probably more famous for these five than for any other twenty or so works that I'm aware of. His other works are have been out of print for the most part since their first publication. The five planetary romances have been available continuously since the early 60s when Avalon Books printed four of them They all use the tropes established by Edgar Rice Burroughs in his Martian Series and clearly were strongly imitative of Burroughs' work. Two of the five take place on Mars and they are my personal favorites; the other three take place on Venus and there are many fans of both Burroughs and Kline that favor Kline's Venus series over Burroughs'. I happen to be one of those, but tastes differ. Either way, if you are looking for a good fun read then this book and all the other four planetary romances by Kline are for you. If you are an Burroughs fan, but have never encountered Kline then you are in for a pleasant surprise. Have fun!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's not quite Burroughs, but it's as good as some Burroughs.By Sailor BarsoomIf you like this sort of thing (and I do) OAK is worth your time. I've read this and one of his Venus series and I've liked both. I'm still a little unclear as to how exactly they tie into each other, as in which Mars adventures take place after (or before?) which Venus adventures. The twist at the end of this book seemed a bit forced, but then so did some of Burroughs' endings. I found the "desert legs" especially cool, and wouldn't mind seeing the idea used in a movie some time.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fun romp on MarsBy Randall C. HarmelinkNot as good as ERB, and I probably should only give it a 3 rating, but I just enjoyed it too much. Call it a guilty pleasure. I liked it in spite of itself. I wish had a separate category for the genre of "planetary romance" or "sword and planet", as they are my favorite type of story. Even more than zombies. :) Harry Thorne, explorer and swordsman, had scarcely more than heard of the Red Planet, Mars—when an amazing thing happened…. Otis Adelbert Kline is well-known as one of the best fantasy/adventure contemporaries of Edgar Rice Burroughs. This edition is sourced from the original magazine text and includes all of the original illustrations. Volume #3 in The Argosy Library. About the AuthorOtis Adelbert Kline was born in Chicago, Illinois on the 1st of July 1891 and died at the age of fifty- five at Short Beach, Connecticut on the 24th of October. During his adulthood, he led a varied career from vanilla extract salesman, to songwriter, to editor, to popular adventure and science fiction author to literary agent. He was also an amateur orientalist and studied Arabic, an interested that strongly influenced his fictional novels and short stories. However, his fame is due to the literary “feud” he had with Edgar Rice Burroughs. Like Burroughs he wrote science fiction romance he placed on Venus, Mars and the Moon and had adventures located in the most remote jungle of Earth. After the mid-thirties, Kline almost entirely abandoned writing to focus on his career as an international literary agent. Among others, he represented Robert Erwin Howard (Conan’s creator) between 1933 and 1936 and, after Howard’s death, he acted as the literary agent of the Howard’s Estate until his own death. He was also the American agent of H.G. Wells.
