Thursthoughts 4.23.20 VOL. 1, ISSUE 34 APRIL 24, 2020 THURSDAY THOUGHTS Weekly Newsletter of Saint Luke Catholic School Virtual High School Fair NEWS & BY MICHAEL LAWLOR Dear SLCS families, As a former middle school teacher, I have had many spring FEATURES conversations over the years with excited sixth and seventh graders as they begin attending Open Houses at the various local high schools. The idea of attending a bigger new school after many years in the same Virtual High School Fair elementary school, while definitely daunting, is an opportunity full of PAGE 1 potential. In early March at Saint Luke's we were starting to organize several lunch time visits for our middle schoolers when we needed to put BLOCS Emergency Fund all of those plans on hold. With the announcement that our buildings would Application not reopen this year, we needed a new plan. PAGE 2 I am very happy to announce that we will be hosting a virtual high EITC Webinars school fair with many local Catholic high schools over Zoom for our sixth PAGE 3 and seventh grade families. This is event is going to take place on Wednesday, May 6th from 5 - 7PM. Each attending high school will be 4/27 - 5/1 Zoom Schedule available for at least an hour, and you can stay with each school for as long or as short a period of time as you would like. More precise PAGE 4 information will be forthcoming to just our sixth and seventh grade families. Spotlight: Egon Voltmer The following schools will be in attendance: PAGE 5 Bishop McDevitt High School Spotlight: Nick D'Alessio Devon Preparatory School Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School PAGE 6 La Salle College High School Martin Saints Classical High School Spotlight: Ella Vangen Mount Saint Joseph Academy PAGE 7 Saint Basil Academy Upcoming Events PAGE 8 Important Documents PAGE 9 “Ask for help. Not because you BLOCS Emergency Scholarship are weak. But Fund Application because you want to You can apply for the scholarship even if you have not qualified or applied for BLOCS previously; also there is a limited remain amount of funding, so the sooner you apply the greater chance that you will receive assistance. Just so you are aware, you must describe the recent hardship your family is facing due to COVID-19 strong.” and not everyone who applies will receive assistance. "Our continued thoughts and prayers are with each of you and your families during the most unprecedented and uneasy time. BLOCS is accepting Emergency Les Brown Scholarship applications at this time for families that have suffered a hardship MOTIVATIONAL developing from the COVID-19 virus. This may be to a loss of a job or a reduction in hours due to businesses being closed or open with limited hours. This funding is for SPEAKER this school year only. The family needs to have an outstanding balance in order to receive funding, and this funding is for K-8 students only. Unfortunately, at this time we do not have any Pre-K funding. Once you have a completed application, please send it over. I am not sure how long the funding will last. When sending in the application, you need to copy the school ([email protected]) on the email. This will help with the signature portion of the application. With a completed application, you must include a current tuition statement and a 2018 or 2019 tax return, all in PDF form. We do not need to have the three documents in one file, but if you can send the three documents in one email with the school name – family name (St. Lukes’s – Harvey) in the subject, that would be very helpful. When you save the files, please save the file as your school name – family name. (St. Lukes’s – Harvey). When you send your email to me ([email protected]), please put your school –family name in the subject line. Since the Scholarship Committee is expecting an abundance of requests, we are limiting the award amounts to $750.00 per student (K - 8) for grade schools. Thank you for your patience with this detailed process. It will make the approvals go smoothly if they are all consistent. If you have any questions, please let me know. Please stay safe and well, Kathleen Harvey Senior financial analyst for BLOCS" CLICK HERE to view BLOCS Application THURSDAY THOUGHTS | PAGE 2 "Donors don’t give to institutions.
