The very existence of hysteria has been called into question by the majority of Anglophone feminists, who have criticized its diagnostic proliferation, claiming that it has negative implications for social change and has played a central part in women’s oppression. The Anglophone feminist tradition views Lacanian psychoanalytic theories of sexuation and hysteria with a critical eye, arguing that Lacan’s oeuvre is another version of patriarchal discourse, another reductionistic paradigm of female suffering, and another essentialist scheme that theorizes the subject within the normative realities of sexual difference and psychopathology. I argue that Anglophone feminism theorizes the unconscious superficially and fails to conceptualize how women’s unconscious desires sustain rather than subvert patriarchy. Whereas feminists challenge traditional assumptions about women’s subjectivity and make a substantial contribution to our knowledge about the oppressions brought on by patriarchal discourses, they misread Lacan’s iv revisionist approach to Freud and undermine Lacan’s theoretical contributions regarding the role of unconscious desire and the real in the constitution of subjectivity. Hence, they fail to explain how the female hysteric, as a victim of patriarchal discourses, preserves the dominance of patriarchy. In this dissertation, I elucidate the structural differences between female hysteria and femininity. I assume that the subject has a particular structural relationship with the Other, and take Lacan’s and Irigaray’s oeuvres as points of departure to articulate an ethics of feminine desire and jouissance and the differences between how a woman maintains her victimhood by being dominated by the law and how a woman achieves her emancipated potentialities by realizing her infinities in relation to the law. v To my mentors, friends, and family, with gratitude! vi ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am deeply indebted to Dr. Bruce Fink for being a unique and sublime mentor throughout my studies at Duquesne University. On July 23, 2008, the Office received the Service's Section 20 Board of Investigation Regarding Allegations of Inappropriate Injections Administered at Joliette Institution between June 27 and July 26, 2007. Our Preliminary Review of the Section 20 Board of Investigation (dated August 19, 2008 and shared with the Service on December 5, 2008) noted several discrepancies between the Bot findings and the use of force reviews conducted at the Institutional, Regional and National (Women Offender and Health Care Sector) levels. The findings of the Bol were also inconsistent with our detailed review of the video evidence. Confronted with an irreconcilable interpretation of the events under scrutiny, my Office commissioned Paul Beaudry, MD, FRCPC to conduct an independent expert review of the treatment received by Ms. Smith, specifically the forced medical injections administered on July 22, 23 and 26, 2007 at Joliette.

  • My Installation Is About Female Hysteria, the Historical Prejudice
    My installation is about female hysteria, the historical prejudice against uncontrollable, overly emotional, or just plain annoying women that originated from it, and the promotion of male dominance in medical fields that came as a result of it. Combined with the video, my project aims to look at how hysteria is represented in the media as well as how the increased availability of news, especially through social media, can create a culture of misinformation and a general lack of knowledge, thus leading to the creation of mass hysteria. I wrote the entire story of The Yellow Wallpaper on yellow wallpaper. I had read it ​ ​ many times before, but transcribing it on the wallpaper forced me to look at the story more closely. As the story progresses, the narrator seems to be swallowed up by the yellow wallpaper, and constantly moving the paper up more and more almost gave me a sense of vertigo. For the sculptural part, I wanted to show the more modern definition of hysteria which is one that forgoes the word’s medical origins and smooths it over as just another word that means overly emotional or excited, and I, therefore, decided to represent hysteria’s historical meaning as a dark mass, lurking somewhere below a swath of bright colors that obstruct the original intent of the word’s meaning. I have always questioned gender roles and wondered why women are expected to do things that men are not and vice versa. This project made me wonder why women are expected to be less active than men and clean up messes rather than make messes themselves, and it also made me wonder why men, especially in medicine, are authoritative figures that give themselves the power to belittle or dismiss women’s thoughts, feelings, and concerns.

RISSE* I In the introduction to his History of sexuality, Michel Foucault pointed to the eighteenth century as the period in which sexuality became a medical concern and women were, in his words, subjected to "hysterization".' By this term, Foucault probably meant that medicine began to pay greater attention to female bodily functions, trying to explain anew women's behaviour and physical complaints within the prevailing theoretical frameworks of the time. Thus, Foucault's seemingly novel "medicine of hysteria" replaced traditional and popular views based on humours, vapours, and the effects of a wandering womb. In his view, this was just one aspect of the medicalization imposed on eighteenth-century life with its inherent shifts in power relationships which constitutes one of the central motifs in his writings.2 The present investigation started out as an effort to organize a rich source ofprimary clinical material: lecture notes and patient case histories from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh during the late-eighteenth century.3 The analysis focused on hospitalized patients labelled as suffering from "hysteria", trying to document and perhaps clarify Foucault's ideas on the subject. Using such historical evidence, this study made some rather unexpected discoveries. It not only exposed the ambiguities inherent in the construction of disease entities, but also refuted Foucault's account of the sexualization ofworking-class women, at least for late-eighteenth-century Edinburgh. Before presenting the archival data, however, it will be useful briefly to consider the views regarding women's health and especially hysteria prevalent in the medical literature during the latter part of the eighteenth century.

Psychological Therapies We will look at four major forms of psychotherapies based on different theories of human nature: 1. Psychoanalytic theory 2. Humanistic theory 3. Behavioral theory 4. Cognitive theory 1: What are the aims and methods of psychoanalysis, and how have they been adapted in psychodynamic therapy? Psychoanalysis The first formal psychotherapy to emerge was psychoanalysis, developed by Sigmund Freud. Psychoanalysis: Aims Freud felt psychological problems originate from childhood repressed impulses and conflicts, so the aim of psychoanalysis is to bring repressed feelings into conscious awareness where the patient can deal with them. When these id-ego- superego conflicts are released, the patient’s anxiety lessens. Psychoanalysis: Methods Dissatisfied with hypnosis, Freud developed the method of free association to unravel the unconscious mind and its conflicts. The patient lies on a couch and speaks about whatever comes to his or her mind.

Ocay he conclusion arrived at in the article titled “Heidegger, Hegel, Marx: Marcuse and the Theory of Historicity,” which appeared in a previous issue of this journal, accounts for Herbert Marcuse’s view of the T 1 possibility of the individual to become disposed to radical action. Marcuse thus wants to suggest that there is still hope for the Enlightenment’s project of “emancipation,” and that there is still a revolutionary subject who can carry out this political struggle for liberation. The progression of consciousness which results in a historically conscious individual exemplified by the “conscious slave” in Hegel’s discussion of master-slave relation provided Marcuse the basis of his claim that the individual can be an active and dynamic political subject. Yet the slave who realizes via the notion of labor that it is himself and not the master who is truly free is, after all, still a slave. This means that individuals still need to fight for their freedom.2 Like Marx, Marcuse believes that the internal logic of overproduction and excessive consumption vis-à-vis massive pauperization3 in a capitalist society lead to the self-destruction of society. The capitalist system of overproduction coupled with excessive consumption creates insatiable individuals whose needs and desires are impossible to satisfy.4 This is dangerous for Marcuse because as the society produces more and more to 1 See Jeffry V. Specifically, I analyze Cronenberg’s monstrous Mother, Nola Carveth, within the role of the family in the 1970s, when the patriarchal, nuclear family is under question in American society. In his essay The American Nightmare: Horror in the 70s critic Robin Wood began a debate surrounding Cronenberg’s early films, namely accusing the director of reactionary misogyny and calling for a political critique of his and other horror director’s work. The debate which followed has sidestepped The Brood, disregarding it as a complication to his oeuvre due to its autobiographical basis. This film, however, offers an opportunity to apply Wood’s call for political criticism to portrayals of hysteria in contemporary visual culture; this thesis takes up this call and fills an important interpretive gap in the scholarship surrounding gender in Cronenberg’s early films. iii This thesis is dedicated to my family for believing in me, supporting me and not traumatizing me too much along the way.

    The Ethic, Phenomenology and Diagnostic of post-war French Psychiatry Thesis submitted to the University of London for the award of Doctor of Philosophy By, David Reggio Goldsmiths College, Department ofHistory, University of London November 2005 1 Abstract of Thesis The thesis seeks to examine the ethical, phenomenological and diagnostic renewal of psychiatry in post-war France. The particular focus of study will be to bring to light (1) the emergence of a psychiatric movement that was to become known as Institutional Psychotherapy in 1952, (2) the inauguration of a particular post-war clinical sentiment of sympathy, (3) and the more specific developments of the psychopathology of schizophrenia undertaken by Dr. Franyois Tosquelles and Dr. Jean Oury. The thesis is composed of three chapters: The first chapter of the thesis, presents a bi-focal analysis of a philanthropic politic characterising two significant moments of medical reform, where psychiatry finds its Hippocratic and Apostolic definition as a vocation addressing the imperial need of man. The first moment, is that of Philippe Pinel in a Post­ Revolutionary France, who urged for more specialised spaces employing the non-violent treatment of the insane. The second, is the German Occupation of France, where the psychiatrist's personage in the questionably 'free' Vichy South is one that is dramatic and resistant. This historical study is conducted in order to bring to light the methodological shift within the history of European psychiatry: what was the art of medicine and alienation for Pinel of the Paris Pitie Salpetriere, is extended and redefmed as the art ofsympathy and dis-alienation for those of the clinical fraternity of Saint-Alban.

    Female Hysteria: The Social Epidemic Samantha Franco A note on the author: Samantha Franco is a fourth-year student at the University of Guelph, currently working towards her undergraduate degree in Honours History. Her passion for women’s history is a driving force behind her research, and she hopes to complete her Masters at Western University in her hometown of London, Ontario. Science has continuously been an unforgiving field for women. Ignored through most of its existence, women have had little to no identity in psychiatry. When they finally were considered worthy of analysis, they were demonized under the foundation of emotional irrationality. The Victorian era of the nineteenth century is an excellent case study in the understanding of the medical oppression of women. During a time of intense and fragile male-female relationships, this period brought with it one of the most influential diseases of female institutionalization: hysteria. In this regard, hysteria served a purpose outside of a scientific context. In the community, hysteria acted as a platform for maintaining male dominance within a drastic power imbalance. It suppressed women, satisfied male insecurities about the female body, and inadvertently vied for the conforming of Victorian gender norms. Jean-Martin Charcot himself manipulated his findings to fit into the social understanding of male and female roles, popularizing his theories and his reputation alongside a dramatically shifting Western society. Hysteria became the scapegoat of unexplainable or uncontrollable female behaviour. The male community was supported at this time by the male-dominant field of science in isolating women for their radical misbehaviour.

It is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, it’s stable over time and leads to distress or impairment. According to a systematic review, the worldwide pooled prevalence of any PD is 7.8% (95% CI: 6.1-9.5) and rates are greater in high-income countries (9.6%, 95% CI: 7.9-11.3) compared with low- and middle-income countries (4.3%, 95% CI: 2.6-6.1). Global rates of cluster A, B and C PD are 3.8% (95% CI: 3.2-4.4), 2.8% (1.6, 3.7%) and 5.0% (4.2, 5.9%). The aim of this narrative review is to reconstruct the evolution of the concept of Personality and Personality Disorders from their origins to nowadays controversies regarding categorical versus dimensional models. An analysis of films from Hollywood’s post-classical period (The Three Faces of Eve (1957), Lizzie (1957), Lilith (1964), Repulsion (1965), Images (1972) and 3 Women (1977)) demonstrates the societal tendency to label a woman’s behavior as mad when it does not fit within the patriarchal mold of how a woman should behave. In addition to discussing the social changes and diagnostic trends in the mental health profession that define “appropriate” female behavior, each chapter also traces how the decline of the studio system and rise of the individual filmmaker impacted the films’ ideologies with regard to mental illness and femininity.
