May-Jun 2015 Edition Third Alarm A Publication of the OFBA Volume 45, No. 3 May-June 2015 A baker’s dozen turned out for the first tour of 2015, a thorough and lengthy visit to Simcoe County, starting here in Rama and stopping in Orillia to see their new halls and dispatch centre and then through the six stations in Oro-Medonte. All the crews were helpful and generous with their time and the weather was superb. Many thanks to Larry Ward for organizing a most successful tour of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, Orillia and Oro-Medonte departments on May 23. A most enjoyable day and the weather was perfect. Our next 2 tours are ready to go with the crews in St. Catharines and Thorold anticipating our arrival on June 27 and a number of departments in Grey and Bruce Counties expecting us on July 18. Starting points and times for both of the tours are outlined in this issue and will be found on the club website as details are finalized. As this is an election year, enclosed with or attached to this issue you will find a nomination form and I ask that you consider running for a position on the Board of Directors. The running of this organization is not onerous and we would welcome any newcomers to the board. Until next time, enjoy the warm weather and hope to see you on one or more of the tours. Bob Rupert, President. From our Membership Secretary… It seems that we have had a problem collecting dues this year, as there are still over 15% of our members who have failed to pay. This is a distressing occurrence as we are half way into another year. Hopefully this situation will right itself. On the brighter side, we have welcomed five new members in the past several months. Remember that we are always on the look out for new members. As one of your “international correspondents”, on our latest trip abroad, I managed to photograph some trucks in Dubai, U.A.E. and in Haifa, Israel. These stops for photo shoots at many of the foreign stations I have visited, have not only provided a warm reception and some great photos, but have also allowed me to meet many interesting fire fighters. I regularly correspond with friends in Barbados, Malta, South Africa and Singapore and always encourage them to send in material about their local fire services. I look forward to another successful year for our members and hope everyone will have a safe and enjoyable summer. Robert Herscovitch, Membership Secretary From the Editor… This edition we stay much closer to home and feature apparatus rosters .St. Catharines and Thorold are covered in time for the tour, we also have an update on Waterloo Region, starting with Waterloo. Bob Rupert supplied the Niagara info, Gary Dinkel sent in Waterloo. Thanks to Rick Loiselle and Ken Walton, we catch up on neglected eastern areas. There are lots of new deliveries also shots from the OAFC show, there will be more of those in the next issue. Photos this time around from Herb Galloway, Terry Yip, Bob Rupert, Dave Stewardson, Gary Dinkel, Rick Loiselle, Ken Buchanan, Larry Thorne and Neil McCarten and former member Benjy Weinzweig. Benjy joined the OFBA at the tender age of 6, our youngest member ever. Sadly, he got caught up in hockey and let his dues lapse (personally, I find fire buffing much safer). Many thanks to Walt McCall for the TFD article, and to Walt, Scott Weeden, Ken Walton and Ken Buchanan for apparatus/station info, and Dan Goyer for the Fire Fighters Without Borders info. By the bye, FFWB (Canada) has donated 46 rigs and tons of equipment abroad, helping to keep ten of thousands of people safer. • Early History of Public Safety in Center Line (Continued)
Early History of Public Safety in Center Line (continued) Early in their first term, the Center Line City Council authorized the purchase of a new 1936 Dodge General fire engine. This apparatus was designated Engine No. 2 and it included a 300 gallon booster tank and 500 GPM pump that was mounted on a 1 1/2 ton Dodge chassis. With the booster tank, this engine could use its own water to quickly douse small fires without needing to hook up to a hydrant or use chemicals. In 1953, the position of Public Safety Commissioner was created and Dennis Frazier, a former De- troit police officer, was appointed to fill the post, which was respon- sible for coordinating all police and fire activities. One of the first changes under Frazier was to have the four full-time firefighters also assume desk and dispatch duties for the police department. This practice continued until 1980 when all police and fire operations were consolidated under the cur- rent Public Safety Department. In the late 1950s, the city purchased a 1956 Chevrolet ambulance, a 1956 Ford pick-up rescue truck, and a 1957 American LaFrance 1,000 GPM pumper which re- placed the 1926 fire truck. In 1957, under Commissioner Frazier there were 20 members of the CLPD and 5 full-time and 11 volunteer members of the CLFD. The full-time staff would peak at 12 in 1970, which was also the peak year for the amount of fire losses as well as the peak of Center Line’s population. In 1978, the rescue truck was replaced with a GMC combination pumper/rescue vehicle, which had a 500 gallon tank and a 750 GPM pump, as well as room to carry rescue equipment such as the “Jaws of Life” which were donated by the Menge VFW Post.
