PRESS RELEASE For immediate release

A new artistic vision for the 13th edition of Cinéma urbain!

For the 13th edition of its popular outdoor film fest, the SAT has put together a carefully-curated selection of bold, eclectic films perfect for warm summer evenings.

Montreal, July 3, 2018 – This year, the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) has completely revamped the programming for its popular Cinéma urbain event, offering fans a new international- style festival experience with a hand-picked selection of compelling titles*. The 13th edition, which runs from July 3 to September 4, 2018, features a bold, wide-ranging mix of classics, premieres, shorts and feature-length films. The films will be screened every Tuesday at 9 p.m., at Place de la Paix in the Quartier des spectacles. Cinéma urbain is presented in collaboration with the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership and the Arrondissement de Ville-Marie.

This year’s carefully-curated lineup includes directors David Lynch, , , , Robin Aubert and Ziad Kalthoum. Certain classics deserve to be spotlighted in this historic neighbourhood. “I put a lot of thought into how these films could become part of the city’s cultural fabric, in what used to be the red light district,” explains Danny Lennon, the SAT’s head of programming and creator of the gala Prends ça court!. Partners in this ambitious project include Fantasia, SPASM, the NFB, the Montreal International Black Film Festival, Filmpop, KINO, Cinemania and RIDM.

The festival kicks off on July 3 with ’s 8½, the surrealist portrayal of an angst-ridden filmmaker considered to be one of the best films of all time. Fans are invited to revisit David Lynch’s ambitious sci-fi movie , in anticipation of Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming remake. They can also

watch one of Spike Lee’s early masterpieces a few days before the release of his latest creation, or immerse themselves in Le Grand Bleu while gazing up at the stars.

In addition to rediscovering the classics, audiences can view the works of promising young talent from Quebec and abroad. Cinéma urbain has the honour of presenting, on July 10, the Quebec premiere of the documentary The Work by Jairus McLeary and Gethin Aldous (United States, 2017)—a unique and moving portrayal of the challenges of rehabilitation as three men from the outside participate in a four-day group-therapy retreat with a group of incarcerated men in Folsom Prison. The doc will be preceded by two short films—Squad Leader TD-73028 Soliloquy by Maxime-Claude l’Écuyer, and Build Ramps Not Walls by Brian Adamkiewicz (a Canadian premiere). And on August 21, audiences can catch the Quebec premiere of the screwball Crash Test Aglaé by Éric Gravel (France, 2017). Festivalgoers can also discover more about the creative vision behind the films, since many directors will be attending the screenings, including local figures Luc Bourdon, Jérémy Comte, Maxime Claude L’Écuyer, Robin Aubert and Montreal director Éric Gravel.

Now’s the time to enjoy your summer evenings and get your fill of great movies!

Don’t forget: Skate Jam Tuesdays are back! Skateboarders will be happy to know that this popular event is back this summer, starting July 3. Every Tuesday, from now to September 4, all are invited to show off their tricks from 6 to 9 p.m. and enjoy a BBQ. * Language: all films will be presented in their original languages with French or English subtitles except for Do the Right Thing which will be presented without subtitles. www.sat.qc.ca/fr/cinema-urbain-2018
