I propose/ to hurl my shafts at freedom's deadliest foes!/ My task is hard-for I am charged to save/ Man from his brother!-to redeem the slave!"1 With these opening words on January 1, 1831, the very first issue of the abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator, was published in Boston, Massachusetts at No.6 Merchants Hall, "at the corner of Walter and Congress streets" 2 . This paper would circulate around the United States to 3000 subscribers and to many more readers,3 bearing on the front page of every issue its motto," Our country is the world-our countrymen are mankind."4 This newspaper ultimately triumphed in spreading the abolitionist fire to the masses. The intense zeal that William Lloyd Garrison, editor of The Liberator , held for the cause of the immediate abolition of slavery was the key to his success as an abolitionist . How did William Lloyd Garrison impact the abolitionist movement? William Lloyd Garrison kept the abolitionist movement prosperous despite damaging failures by way of the publication of The Liberator, correspondence with other abolitionist groups, and by standing firm, though the very same abolitionists he worked with disagreed with his "radical" viewpoint on abolitionism, because he was insistent on not telling a part of the truth of the immorality of slavery, but the whole truth. Garrison's beginnings as an abolitionist were rooted in his childhood and adolescence. WHEREAS, Frederick Douglass was born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey near Easton, Maryland, in February of 1818, and lived the first twenty years of his life as a slave before escaping to freedom in 1838 through the Underground Railroad; and; WHEREAS, with the assistance of abolitionists, he resettled in New Bedford, Massachusetts and changed his name to avoid recapture by fugitive slave bounty hunters; he thus began a new life as Frederick Douglass and worked tirelessly to help other slaves flee north through the Underground Railroad; and WHEREAS, Frederick Douglass, who had no formal education and taught himself to read and write, would go on to become one of the Nation’s leading abolitionists; his seminal autobiographical work, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, explained with unsurpassed eloquence and detail how slavery corrupts the human spirit and robs both master and slave of their freedom; and WHEREAS, Frederick Douglass was not only prominent as an uncompromising abolitionist, but he also defended women’s rights; and WHEREAS, Frederick Douglass, through his writings, lectures, speeches, activism, and relationship with President Abraham Lincoln helped the Nation summon the will to accept civil war as the price to abolish slavery and emancipate millions from bondage; and WHEREAS, Frederick Douglass was a strong advocate for African American service in the Civil -

The Denmark Vesey Conspiracy Conceptualizing Crime and Religion in Slaveholding Societies Paul Schneider-Krumpus This project was supported by the University of Minnesota Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Premise of Research Through the UROP program, I have conducted an historical documentary analysis of the Denmark Vesey conspiracy, an alleged plot of slave rebellion that was exposed in Charleston, South Carolina in 1822. This research is meant to be part of Professor Katherine Gerbner’s wider research on the construction of religion and crime in relation to New World slavery. Little documentation of the alleged plot exists outside of court documents from the trials of the accused, and so these were especially important source materials. New strides are being made in the understanding of the Denmark Vesey conspiracy, as professional historians continue to accumulate sources and construct new and fuller interpretations of the events. Objective of Research The objective of this research was to use primary sources relevant to the Denmark Vesey conspiracy to learn about the relationships between law, religion, and the institution of slavery in the antebellum American South, particularly in relation to slave revolts. Considering the religious nature of the plot, its conspirators, its suppressors, and the very society it took place in, the Denmark Vesey conspiracy is especially suited to an analysis of this sort. Compared to other slave revolts, this plot is only lightly studied. It could be essential to understanding other North American slave revolts though; the number of people involved is alleged to be well over 6,000, which would make it one of the largest uprisings ever conceived of in this part of the world. -

John Brown, Abolitionist: The Man Who Killed Slavery, Sparked the Civil War, and Seeded Civil Rights by David S. Reynolds Homegrown Terrorist A Review by Sean Wilentz New Republic Online, 10/27/05 John Brown was a violent charismatic anti-slavery terrorist and traitor, capable of cruelty to his family as well as to his foes. Every one of his murderous ventures failed to achieve its larger goals. His most famous exploit, the attack on Harpers Ferry in October 1859, actually backfired. That backfiring, and not Brown's assault or his later apotheosis by certain abolitionists and Transcendentalists, contributed something, ironically, to the hastening of southern secession and the Civil War. In a topsy-turvy way, Brown may have advanced the anti-slavery cause. Otherwise, he actually damaged the mainstream campaign against slavery, which by the late 1850s was a serious mass political movement contending for national power, and not, as Brown and some of his radical friends saw it, a fraud even more dangerous to the cause of liberty than the slaveholders. This accounting runs against the grain of the usual historical assessments, and also against the grain of David S. Reynolds's "cultural biography" of Brown. The interpretations fall, roughly, into two camps. They agree only about the man's unique importance. Writers hostile to Brown describe him as not merely fanatical but insane, the craziest of all the crazy abolitionists whose agitation drove the country mad and caused the catastrophic, fratricidal, and unnecessary war. Brown's admirers describe his hatred of slavery as a singular sign of sanity in a nation awash in the mental pathologies of racism and bondage. -

Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway Delaware Chapter 3.0 Intrinsic Resource Assessment The following Intrinsic Resource Assessment chapter outlines the intrinsic resources found along the corridor. The National Scenic Byway Program defines an intrinsic resource as the cultural, historical, archeological, recreational, natural or scenic qualities or values along a roadway that are necessary for designation as a Scenic Byway. Intrinsic resources are features considered significant, exceptional and distinctive by a community and are recognized and expressed by that community in its comprehensive plan to be of local, regional, statewide or national significance and worthy of preservation and management (60 FR 26759). Nationally significant resources are those that tend to draw travelers or visitors from regions throughout the United States. National Scenic Byway CMP Point #2 An assessment of the intrinsic qualities and their context (the areas surrounding the intrinsic resources). The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway offers travelers a significant amount of Historical and Cultural resources; therefore, this CMP is focused mainly on these resource categories. The additional resource categories are not ignored in this CMP; they are however, not at the same level of significance or concentration along the corridor as the Historical and Cultural resources. The resources represented in the following chapter provide direct relationships to the corridor story and are therefore presented in this chapter. A map of the entire corridor with all of the intrinsic resources displayed can be found on Figure 6. Figures 7 through 10 provide detailed maps of the four (4) corridors segments, with the intrinsic resources highlighted. This Intrinsic Resource Assessment is organized in a manner that presents the Primary (or most significant resources) first, followed by the Secondary resources. -
