Dear Members, It’s O V E R and we did it! I, for one, was not sure of anything last July when sites were booked or cost prohibitive and once Knoxville Convention & Exhibition Center was found the difficulties with AKC seemed insurmountable! First, thanks to Linda Pitts for insisting that this facility DID exist! All online searches sent me directly to big, detached CC across the way. The management and staff of the Holiday Inn were wonderful to work with and tried to accommodate all our needs. Y’all remember every time we change venues the first year is rough! Rooms were beautiful and folks liked that hotel was friendly! Though the hotel changed hours to accommodate our crazy schedules, many discovered that there is an abundance of restaurants nearby and the hotel van will take you there! A phone call to the hotel gets a pick up for return! The management of the KCEC, though typical of all convention centers, worked through any difficulties we had and were a big help! We now have an answer for the hot water situation for bathing and if we return to this site that will not be as big a problem as this year! The tack room was a hit with exhibitors and they appreciated having X- Pens with their set-up! Show rings were open & carpet great! As I retire as Show Chair, I have to send a heartfelt thank you to my Committee Chairs, my Assistant Show Chair and Kathy Patterson. Without the hard work of these volunteers nothing would have come together. I will list you all and again say THANK YOU for making my years as Show Chair an enjoyable experience!

Page 24 AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN March 2012 The late deForest F. Jurkiewicz of Palm Hill started breeding in the 1950’s and continued for more than forty years. She not only exemplified a very effective breeding program, she was a great friend and mentor to many individuals throughout those years. Many of her friends and protégées continue to be involved with the breed and the organizations that support it – the American Spaniel Club, Inc., the Cocker Spaniel Specialty Club of Georgia, DeForesT JUrkIewICz the Cocker Spaniel Club of Chattanooga and the Salamonie and Ohio Valley Cocker Spaniel Clubs, among others. de was an early advocate of the “Cockers Do It ALL” philosophy which became the theme of an ASC National when hosted by her Georgia specialty club. She started with blacks that she worked in obedience and sparingly bred when she lived in Florida. After moving to Georgia, she acquired a buff bitch and ventured into breeding the de and Tiger other solid variety.. The Palm Hill dogs have had a strong influence on breed type, especially in the buffs and to some extent in the blacks. Who can forget Ch. Palm Hill Caro-Bu’s Solid Gold, the top ASCOB sire in the breed, his top-producing son, Ch. Palm Hill’s Krugerand, or the lovely Ch Palm Hill’s Mountain Ashe flying around the ring in the mid- 1980’s. Bitches were not ignored – Palm Hill’s Starlet O’Hara, Ch. Palm Hill’s Tiger Lily and Ch. Palm Hill Hu- Mar’s Wildfire were all significant influences on the breed. de was an ethical role model for the small breeder; she never had a big kennel or bred numerous litters a year. In her breeding program, de usually kept a few special bitches and took much care and study to produce the type and style she envisioned for the next generation. She focused on the development of her pups and carefully placed them in show homes or contracted spay/neuter companion homes. As the wife of a medical doctor, she appreciated the value of health testing for her breeding The family's favorite photo of de stock and utilized it when it became available in the 1970’s. Many of her pick males were placed in show homes, often on co-ownerships, and these would go on to have not only great show careers but become successful and influential stud dogs. Many of the most memorable, top winning, and top producing studs and bitches of solid colors either carries the Palm Hill prefix or are direct descendants. de viewed herself primarily as a breeder and wanted to remind the ASC and its members to recognize the influence of other small breeders so she established the Ch. Palm Hill’s Tiger Lily, C.D. Perpetual Memorial Trophy to be awarded at the National Specialty Show to the breeder of the Best of Breed winner. Each year, another breeder receives this award as a cherished reminder of the ultimate accomplishment – Best of Breed at the National Specialty. de did not toot her own horn, but in her own quiet way, had a significant influence on the breed she loved. We honor this dedicated breeder, deForest F. Jurkiewicz , Kim Rigsby Young accepting de's Hall of Fame certificate from Spaniel by inducting her into the ASC Hall of Fame for her Sleuth Bill Gorodner. SPOTLIGHT ON ASC THERAPY DOGS

by Rosemary Maruish

MAKE ROOM FOR DANNY BOY AT HEARTSTONE – PRESBYTERIAN VILLAGE DANNY PAWS VISITS AND A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED!

One of the things I like best about Therapy Dog visiting is trying to make things fun and different for both the residents and Danny Boy. I always said I would quit Therapy Dog volunteering when it was no longer fun. Here I am, 11 years later and still enjoying every visit! The last two visits celebrated the Christmas season and Danny Boy’s Fifth Birthday. I could hardly wait to get to both! Earlier last year, I had spotted two doggy costumes on sale and I snatched them up quicker than Danny Boy could eat his kibble! From previous experience I knew that a dog in costume lightened up the atmosphere and made things more fun. So I was ready for the two visits to come. DANNY PAWS Our visit, on December 16, 2011, was a double celebration. Not only were we celebrating Christmas, but I was secretly COMES TO TOWN! celebrating my Birthday. And I couldn’t have picked a better place to do both than at Heartstone . When Danny Boy and I walked into Heartstone in his Santa Claus costume, holiday spirits began to rise! DANNY PAWS was in the house and the fun had started! Inside the foyer, visitors coming and going were stopping to say, “Hello,” to Danny Boy and myself, and commenting on how cute he looked in his Santa suit. Once Murle, Heartstone’s Activities Director, came upstairs to get us, the excitement intensified! Danny Boy was excited, pulling me into the dining area on his leash, where we met with our guests. He knew what he was there for and could hardly wait to get started. “MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYBODY!”, I announced to You’d better watch out... A Heartstone resident approaches the crowd. “MERRY CHRISTMAS, DANNY BOY!” they DANNY PAWS is Danny Boy to wish him a “Merry responded. The residents were seated at a large, oblong, coming to town and Christmas. dining table. One by one we went around the table with at Heartstone. We want to wish you a Merry Christmas!” Paws out of his costume, and we were on our way. But not “O-o-oh, he’s so-o-o CUTE!” squealed one lady. She could before Danny Boy got his reward. Travelling home, we hardly contain her excitement and waved us over to her always make our usual stop at McDonald’s for a cup of seat. I placed Danny Boy in her lap and she immediately vanilla ice cream. From thee we left for home knowing we began hugging and kissing him. Others wanted lap visits had brought some Christmas cheer to some people who too, so I went chair to chair gingerly placing Danny Boy maybe had nothing to celebrate this holiday. into the laps of those who wanted visits. A relative of one of As for me, there wasn’t a cake, party, or gifts there for the seniors admired Danny Boy and kiddingly wanted to my birthday. Only a couple people even knew it was my know if he could take him home with him. I jokingly said, birthday. But, I got the BEST gift of all. And that was the “T aking him home is not an option. Danny Boy and I would miss JOY I got from sharing myself and my dog’s love with each other too much.” The gentleman understood and then others. I also realized that if hadn’t been born, none of this bent over to greet Danny Boy. would have taken place. And that was the greatest gift of all! HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY DANNY BOY!

Ever since Danny Boy and I found a regular place to visit, I knew I wanted to share a birthday celebration for him with the residents at Heartstone. When I first approached Murle, the Activities Director, about having it in January, I got no comment. I guess she thought I was crazy to want a doggy birthday party for Danny Boy. After all, who does such a thing for a dog especially at an Alzheimer’s facility? Yet inside, I knew this would be a hit with the residents. I had already done it several times before, successfully, with my last Therapy Dog, Bubba. After the success of our DANNY PAWS visit, I asked Murle, again, if we could plan on it for January 20. I told her I would bring the decorations and cake for Danny Boy. She agreed, and said she would provide the refreshments for the guests. Several weeks before the party, I got busy buying the decorations and searching for recipes for doggy birthday cakes. I already had gotten a party costume for Danny Boy to wear, a clown outfit, and I planned to have him groomed. Now, all that was left to do is whip up the special, all natural, peanut butter and carrot cake, with cream cheese icing and decorate it with tiny bone shaped biscuits. I have had Danny Boy now for 3 ½ years but never had a Birthday Party for him like I did for Bubba. Danny Boy probably didn’t even know what a Birthday Party was. But he was soon to find out. While I was baking his cake, Danny Boy was taking whiffs of his Birthday cake baking in the oven. I explained to him that we were going to celebrate the day he was born, January 20, with our friends at Heartstone , after we did our Therapy Dog visits. Then we Rosemary Holds Danny Boy above his Birthday cake while the were going to have a party for him there. guests sing “Happy Bithday!” to him. continued on page 36

Our friend and helper, Nancy, got out the party plates and distributed them as Murle served chocolate cupcakes and Coke to the group. We took Danny Boy’s cake out, put 5 candles on it, and lit them. I held Danny Boy in my arms above the cake as we sang “Happy Birthday” to him. I made a wish for him and blew out the candles. The residents cheered and I cut a piece of cake for Danny Boy to eat. He wasted no time wolfing it down! After we cleaned up, Danny Boy, Nancy, and I said our “Good Byes,” and it was time to go. We left feeling like flying knowing that we made an ordinary day fun for a group of seniors all because of a dog’s birthday.

AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN March 2012 Page 41 ANNUAL COCKER SPANIEL DNA CLINIC Friday, July 20, 2012 Purina Events Center 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Advancing the health of all Cocker Spaniels through DNA collection for research

With the Dog Genome Project almost complete, we understand how important it is for us as breeders, to develop genetic resources to learn more about the health conditions that affect Cockers.

Led by the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association working with Dr. Gary Johnson at the University of Missouri, School of Veterinary Medicine. Many breed parent clubs now have dedicated DNA Banks, these DNA banks are repositories of DNA submitted by owners and breeders from around the world.

The American Spaniel Club Foundation has joined them and the Cocker DNA Bank will be a ready resource to researchers working on a variety of canine health conditions. The DNA Bank streamlines the recruitment process.

Banked Cocker DNA may be withdrawn by Dr. Gary Johnson, or the ASC Foundation for approved research projects that benefit American Cocker Spaniels. Ten percent of the DNA sample from each dog submitted belongs to the YOU, the donor and can be withdrawn for specific research projects important to you.

Submit your Cocker’s DNA Join us at the 2102 National as we bank on our future to safeguard our Cockers’ health

No Cost to participate. Bring a 3 generation pedigree for each Cocker Spaniel - Individual Dog Questionnaire and Submission Confirmation Forms may be found on the ASC Foundations web site at: http://www.asc-f.org/DNA-Bank.html

For more information please contact: Carol Rutherford, DNA Clinic Coordinator [email protected] or (309) 263-4443
