It is one of the most intractable and long-lasting ethnopolitical conflicts in the world and is replete with violence and atrocities that have escalated and deescalated from time to time. In this paper several peace and conflict studies (PACS) theories are used to assess the conflict and link formal and informal peacemaking strategies to the Russo-Chechen conflict. It is argued that informal multilevel and multimodal diplomacy on different levels is necessary for transformation of this conflict. Localizada no extremo sul da Federação Russa, a ex-república autônoma da União Soviética ganhou as manchetes dos principais veículos de informação do planeta há pouco mais de uma década, com a eclosão de violentos conflitos entre a milícia local e soldados russos. O atual presidente Ramzan Kadyrov herda a liderança de uma nação destruída por duas invasões russas, por anos de corrupção, por uma alta taxa de desemprego e com um dos maiores níveis de pobreza entre as unidades federativas ligadas à Rússia. Apesar de Kadyrov afirmar que o país goza de paz e prosperidade, fontes imparciais (SEIERSTAD, 2008; GILLIGAN, 2010) mostram que a realidade na região não condiz com o que é dito pelo líder. Tanto a situação atual da Chechênia quanto o próprio discurso de Kadyrov podem ser justificados se analisarmos o contexto da relação, extremamente conturbada, deste povo do Cáucaso com os russos nos últimos quase dois séculos. Desde a chegada do general Yermolov às planícies caucasianas do norte, no século XIX, foram muito poucos os períodos os quais os Vainahks (ancestrais dos chechenos e inguchétios) puderam desfrutar da paz, da terra e do meio de vida que lhes pertenciam anteriormente.     61 The Return of the “Humble I”: The Bookseller of Kabul and Contemporary Norwegian Literary Journalism Steen Steensen Oslo and Akerhus University College of Applied Sciences, Norway Åsne Seierstad’s The Bookseller of Kabul prompted controversy in Nor- way, a controversy that influences the practice of literary journalism in that country to this day. n September 2002 a few copies of a new nonfiction book nobody seemed Ito have any hope for was modestly placed on the shelves of Norwegian bookstores. The book, which portrayed the life of a relatively ordinary Af- ghan family, had a limited print run of approximately 2,000 copies, and the publisher did not bother to market it properly. The author, the then relatively unknown––even to a Norwegian audience––journalist Åsne Seierstad, did not seem to hope for much either. “Why would anyone want to read about an Afghan family?” she much later was quoted as asking herself.1 The first re- view seemed to agree and called the book “dreary.”2 But then something hap- pened. Within a few months, the book––The Bookseller of Kabul3––became a national best seller, selling 250,000 copies, which is a record for nonfiction literature in Norway. Within a few years, it was translated into forty-one languages and had topped the New York Times best-seller list for forty-one consecutive weeks. Something, however, was lost in translation. While both reviewers and readers around the world praised The Bookseller of Kabul, the bookseller him- self, Shah Mohammad Rais (who is given the pseudonym Sultan Khan in the book) raised his voice in the Norwegian public sphere.
