RESEARCH COMMUNICATIONS Intrusion pathway of invasive Asian Southeast Asia. In the Neotropical region, C. gestroi was first described as C. vastator and then under the name C. subterranean termite, Coptotermes havilandi Holmgren it spread from Asia to Brazil in gestroi (Wasmann) from the 1936, into the Caribbean4, and into peninsular Florida, Neotropics into the Indian mainland USA5. Along with the junior synonyms for C. gestroi, such as 6 1, 2 the destructive C. heimi (Wasmann) , confusion and T. Venkatesan *, C. M. In this contribution we summarize the current status of the known termites of the Azores (North Atlantic; 37-40° N, 25-31° W). Since 2000, four species of termites have been iden- tified in the Azorean archipelago. These are spreading throughout the islands and becoming common structural and agricultural pests. Two termites of the Kalotermitidae family, Cryp- totermes brevis (Walker) and Kalotermes flavicollis (Fabricius) are found on six and three of the islands, respectively. The other two species, the subterranean termites Reticulitermes grassei Clemént and R. flavipes (Kollar) of the Rhinotermitidae family are found only in confined areas of the cities of Horta (Faial) and Praia da Vitória (Terceira) respectively. Due to its location and weather conditions the Azorean archipelago is vulnerable to coloni- zation by invasive species. The fact that there are four different species of termites in the Azores, all of them considered pests, is a matter of concern. Here we present a comparative description of these species, their known distribution in the archipelago, which control measures are being used against them, and what can be done in the future to eradicate and control these pests in the Azores. -

Atkinson Department of Entomology, University of California Riverside, CA 92521 ATKINSON: COMPOSIDON OF COLONIES OF INCISI1ERMES MINOR Abstract The entire contents of 38 naturally occurring colonies of the western drywood termite were examined over a period of 14 months in southern California. Emergence of alates from caged colonies was also observed. Large nymphs with wing buds (prealates) may be present from April through September. Alate emergence has been observed from early June through November and probably occurs over a longer period. There is no indication that colonies in the study area are strongly synchronized with respect to alate development and emergence. There is noticeable seasonal reduction in oviposition from October through April. More than two reproductives (primaries or secondaries) were never recovered from any colony, even the largest, suggesting that reports of supplementary reproductives in older colonies might be based on inadvertent mixing of colonies during extraction. The number and aggregate weight of soldiers was strongly correlated with colony size, supporting the hypothesis of a constant or optimal ratio of soldiers to other colony members. The average size of soldiers was weakly, but significantly correlated with colony size. The use of heated air to create lethal temperatures within infested wood serves as a nonchemical treatment option targeting whole structure or large portions of the structure. However, the presence of hard-to-heat areas and potential risk of damage for heat-sensitive items are recog- nized as important challenges. Here, we tested if a localized injection of volatile essential oil could be utilized to address the heat sink issue, potentially increasing the overall efficiency of heat treatments against drywood termites. Artificially infested wooden blocks were placed in several locations of the test building, and heat treatments were conducted. -
Predicting Habitat Suitability of Coptotermes Gestroi (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) with Species Distribution Models

Entomol. 106(1): 311Ð321 (2013); DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1603/EC12309 ABSTRACT Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) is an important structural pest reported from Asia, PaciÞc islands, North America, Caribbean islands, South America, and Indian Ocean islands. This study summarized previous records of C. gestroi and its synonyms, presenting 184 infested counties from 24 countries. Based on the geo-references occurrence locations and global raster data of climate, geography, and human population, C. gestroi were found most commonly in warm, high precipitation, low altitude, and human populated areas. By using species distribution models, we predicted its current infested area (model 1), habitat suitability (model 2), and probability of introduction (model 3) on a global scale. The results showed its recorded locations and the predicted distribution of the present day are similar, but the suitable habitat is larger than its current distribution. The patterns of the introduction frequency (model 3) and habitat suitability (model 2) are inconsistent. Temperate cities with high introduction risk are located in Europe, United Sates, northeastern China, and Japan where habitat suitability is low and hence successful colonization is unlikely. In tropics and subtropics, habitat suitability of C. gestroi is high. We speculate that continuous urbanization and increasing human population will increase its introduction frequency and cause further extension in fast developing tropical and subtropical countries. ABSTRACT Most invasive species hitchhike on human transportation, and their close associations with human activity increase their chances of uptake. Once aboard, potential invaders have to survive the journey, and those with traits such as being a general feeder or tolerance to a wide range of environmental conditions tend to survive the transportation better. Similar traits are generally considered to also aid their establishment in new habitats, but stud- ies showed that the propagule pressure, not any of the species-specific traits, is the most important factor contributing to their successful establishment. Higher propagule pressure, i.e., repeated invasions of larger numbers of individuals, reduces Allee effects and aids the population growth of invasive species in alien lands. Coined as the invasive bridgehead ef- fect, repeated introduction also selects a more invasive population that serves as the source of further invasions to other areas. Invasive species is the consequence of homogenocene (our current ecological epoch with diminished biodiversity and increasing similarity among ecosystems worldwide) that began with the Columbian Exchange of the 15th century and possibly the Pax Mongolica of the 13-14th century. Anthropogenic movement of goods among major cities will only accelerate, and the heightened propagule pressure will increase the number of invasive species for as long as the current practices of global commercial activi- ties continue. -
