FM 271 The Films of Wim Wenders Seminar Leader: Matthias Hurst Email: [email protected] Office Hours (P 98, Room 003): Tuesday, 13.30 – 15.00, or by appointment Course Times: Friday, 14.00 – 17.15; Wednesday, 19.30 – 22.00 (weekly film screening) Course Description Wim Wenders is one of Germany’s best known and most prolific filmmakers. He was a major representative of New German Cinema and the so-called Autorenfilm in the 1970s and 1980s, and an important artistic voice for the post-war generation. In addition, he became a celebrated figure in international cinema, making films in locations all over the world, and contributing to the genre of documentary as well as the development of the feature film. As film historians have noted, Wenders is notoriously difficult to classify in terms of cultural traditions or cinematic movements; thus exploring Wenders’s development as filmmaker implies looking at different aesthetic and narrative approaches to cinema, from auteur cinema to modern and postmodern film. His two most famous works Paris, Texas (1984), set in the desolate American West, and Wings of Desire (1987), a gripping portrait of the divided city of Berlin, encapsulate his wide-ranging scope and experimental power. We will consider these two works within Wim Wenders’s career, which includes Alice in the Cities (1974), Kings of the Road (1976), The American Friend (1977), The End of Violence (1997), Buena Vista Social Club (1999), The Million Dollar Hotel (2000), Land of Plenty (2004), Don’t Come Knocking (2005), Every Thing Will Be Fine (2015), Submergence (2017).

  • 1 Wim Wenders / Biographie
WIM WENDERS / BIOGRAPHIE Wim Wenders (geb.

  • The Million Dollar Hotel
THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL is a story about friendship and deception - and about the immeasurable power of unconditional love. A group of freaks, outsiders and drifters live in a run-down hotel in downtown Los Angeles, in an area full of drug addicts and homeless people. The story is told through the eyes of a lovesick dreamer (Jeremy Davies), who everyone calls Tom Tom. The object of his devotion is Eloise (Milla Jovovich), a fallen angel of sorts. There is trouble in this madhouse. One of the residents, the eccentric junkie Izzy (Tim Roth), comes to a grisly end by being pushed off of the roof. And because - to the surprise of all of the residents - Izzy proves to be the son of a multi-millionaire media boss, an FBI agent enters the scene: Skinner (Mel Gibson). What no one suspects is that this particular long arm of the law is even crazier than any of the charming characters living in the Million Dollar Hotel. Bono provided the concept for the film as well as the soundtrack. It was shot exclusively in the real-life Rosslyn Million Dollar Hotel and in the streets around it. • Wim Wenders' Use of Space in the Million Dollar
ANZCA08 Conference, Power and Place. Wellington, July 2008 Wim Wenders’ Use of Space in The Million Dollar Hotel Stan Jones University of Waikato Dr Stan Jones co-founded Screen and Media at Waikato in 1987. He has a special interest in cross-cultural influence and identity questions in media, in the films of Wim Wenders, European cinema, the reception of New Zealand film in Germany, and in film synchronisation. Contact: Stan Jones University of Waikato Private Bag 3105 Hamilton 3240 New Zealand (07) 838 4466 ext 8362 [email protected] Abstract Wim Wenders has been quoted as saying, of his own development as a filmmaker, that he is “a painter of space engaged on a quest for time” (qtd. in Graf, 2002, p.63). This paper offers a systematic assessment of the way Wenders creates the filmic space of The Million Dollar Hotel (Wenders,1999) from a place existing in downtown Los Angeles: the Frontier Hotel on East 5th St., LA (with its companion hotel, the Rosslyn, just across the street). This study considers both place and space as filmic effects, which operate on a continuum from documentary to fantasy. Introduction Wim Wenders recognises in himself what he calls a ‘weakness’ for places: “Ich habe einfach ein Faible für Orte. Im vorigen Jahrhundert wäre ich Reiseschriftsteller geworden.” (“I’ve simply a weakness for places. In the previous century, I would have been a travel writer.” (Kilb, 2000, p.27. All translations by SJ). The collections of Wenders’ writings on cinematic topics and related matters, such as his Emotion Pictures (1986), Die Logik der Bilder/The Logic of Images (1988) or The Act of Seeing (1992), the books-of-the-film which frequently accompany his work, and particularly his collections of photographs, such as his Bilder von der Oberfläche der Erde/ Images of the Earth’s Surface(2001) and Einmal/Once (2001), all reinforce his ‘weakness’ for places.
