Intercultural Philosophy and Communication - The aim of this course is to approach the phenomenon of communication between cultures from a philosophical point of view. Not only the possibility of communication between world civilizations will be debated but also, depending on their importance for the discussion of the topic, the typical philosophical mindsets and attitudes of the different cultures will be addressed. The framework of the investigation will be delivered by models that were developed within the Theory of Communication. They are tools that enable one to understand why culturally different philosophies can influence the process of intercultural communication and how the form and appearance of this event of communication itself can be regarded as a reflection of these intellectual systems of thought. Baylor equivalencies: PSC 4V94, PSY 4V96, CSS 3393, JOU 3387 or PHI 4V99

International Relations from a European Perspective - This course has two goals:  First, to present International Relations from a very broad perspective: what are the main theories of international relations from a political, economical, historical and socio-cultural (European) perspective;  Second, to expand each student’s consciousness of the world in which he or she lives by addressing a number of substantive issues in today’s international relations, such as: the proliferation of nuclear weapons, control of the arms trade, North South development/ debt- relief questions, the rise of nationalism, global environmental issues and global terrorism. Modernism and Beyond in British and Continental European Literature - Meant as an introduction to British and continental European literature the class is concentrating on significant artistic movements of the 20th century that widely influenced and (at least partly) shaped Western culture. With world-famous authors like Joseph Conrad, Hermann Hesse, James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Andre Breton, Jean Cocteau and Samuel Beckett, the choice of text examples ranges from turn-of-the-century Realism to English Modernism, and beyond to Surrealism and post-modern drama. The seminar is based on narratives, poetry and drama, strong on questions of identity, vocation and a changing perception of Western culture. These will be thoroughly explored together with a presentation of suitable techniques in literary criticism. The texts will be compared with each other, regarding similarities and differences in topics and writing styles, focusing in particular on inter-textual relations. Baylor equivalencies: ENG 2306 or GTX 4321

Brand Management - Brand Management studies how to build, maintain and exploit a company’s most valuable asset: its brands. While products are increasingly becoming more standardized, the only difference that remains is the brand label on them. But brands are no manna from heaven. It takes serious efforts to build a brand, and Marketing Communication is a major tool in achieving an outstanding brand. Starting from the brand equity concept, we study how brand equity is achieved. After a short look at measurement issues (how do you establish a brand’s worth?) we turn to managerial issues: what can you do with your strong brand? No surprise that in all management stages advertising plays an important role. More precisely we discover that the concept of Integrated Marketing Communication is of crucial importance. This concept proposes to design and plan all communications in relation to company’s strategic policies, in particular its branding strategy. In the course we study relevant parts of a book by the leading professor in branding Kevin Keller. In addition a few recent articles from the literature are integrated in the course, to highlight specific topics and to learn how academic literature can be beneficial to managerial studies. The final assignment is to design a Brand Management plan. In this plan you integrate all topics that you have explored in the course. For Bachelor students the course is part of the Marketing Major. For Bachelors with other majors the course can be of interest. For example: Accounting students learn about the background of an important intangible asset. Strategy students dive into one particularly important strategic issue. Further the course is of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about the thrilling world of branding and advertising, which is around us anytime, anyplace, anywhere. Baylor equivalencies: MKT 4340
