Westmeath Moate is a town on the Cloghatanny River, close to Westmeath’s county town of Athlone. Owing to its easy accessibility and large choice of shops, Athlone is the main retail destination for residents in the Midlands region of Ireland. At the centre of the town is a modern shopping centre, built in 2007, containing 54 shops and many cafes. South of the city centre there is another shopping centre, the Golden Island Shopping Centre. Athlone Castle is a 12th-century castle and family- friendly attraction which includes a Visitor Centre with modern exhibitions. Luan Gallery is an art gallery in Athlone open to the public. Siutated in the province of Leinster, County Westmeath originally formed part of the historic Kingdom of Meath (Midhe). It was named Mide because the kingdom was located in the geographical centre of Ireland (the word Mide meant ‘middle’). There was nothing taught in school then that would serve as a foundation or build-up in young boys any deep sense of patriotism. father had been in Australia and there he had come in contact with many of the men who had been deported or had to leave Ireland because they loved it too well, according to English standards When we were children, he regularly discussed Irish History with us and enlightened us on the many crimes and wrongs perpetrated on our country by the English invader, and he often sang traditional folk songs for us. Thus we grew up in an atmosphere in which there was a love for everything Irish and with a great desire to see the country independent and in commandof her own destiny. I think my father was a Fenian. I had read and studied books such as "The Jail Journal" and "The last Conquest". In 1907 I became a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Database of Irish Historical Statistics - Language Notes 1 Language Notes on Language (Barony) From the census of 1851 onwards information was sought on those who spoke Irish only and those bi-lingual. However the presentation of language data changes from one census to the next between 1851 and 1871 but thereafter remains the same (1871-1891). IV., c 99. Their origins pre-date this act, they were used in the assessments of local taxation under the Grand Juries. Over time many were split into smaller units and a few were amalgamated. Townlands and parishes - smaller units - were detached from one barony and allocated to an adjoining one at vaious intervals. This the size of many baronines changed, albiet not substantially. Furthermore, reclamation of sea and loughs expanded the land mass of Ireland, consequently between 1851 and 1861 Ireland increased its size by 9,433 acres. The census Commissioners used Barony units for organising the census data from 1821 to 1891. These notes are to guide the user through these changes. THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

Mac Aodha Abstract Street names in Irish towns and cities reflect the historical periods in which those names were given, medieval through the twentieth century. The majority of these names can be traced to English words, although many streets have English-sounding names which can be traced to Irish words. Classifying these names reveals the many reasons for name origins, from descriptive through destination to commemorative. ***** The Growth of Irish Towns Relatively little is known about the origins of Irish urban life. It is quite conceivable that future research will reveal the importance of pre- Viking settlements throughout the island, just as recent excavations, notably those at Woodquay in Dublin (Wallace; 0 Riordain), have emphasized the role of Norse invaders and traders in developing the coastal towns of the east and south. Town life flourished in the Anglo- Norman period (1169-c.1300). The Viking ports were redeveloped and many new towns were established, often on the sites of former monastic settlements. These Anglo-Norman towns were concentrated in the southeast, in Leinster and east Munster, but they included important outposts elsewhere such as Galway in Conn aught and Carrickfergus in Ulster (0 Sullivan; Mc Neill). With the decline of Anglo-Norman power many of these towns shrank into insignificance or even disappeared (Glasscock), but a few new ones were established in the counties of Laois and Offaly during the reign of Philip and Mary (1553-58). The Tudor reconquest brought about a revival of urban life in the old southeastern heartland of English influence (Aalen, chapter 6), while the early seventeenth century saw the final decline of Irish power in the north of the island and the founding of a large ·number of new towns in the escheated counties of Ulster 345 346 Breandan S.

NEW light upon the nature of the first fortresses built by the at Simon Fraser University on June 6, 2015 A Normans in Ireland may, I think, be gained from a consider- ation of the number and distribution of certain Irish place names involving one or other of the terms mote and breteache. The mote names, indeed, are so obvious that they have not been alto- gether overlooked, but their significance has, I think, been missed, while even the existence of the bretesche names has not hitherto been suspected. To take the latter, as the more important for our argument, first: The word Brittas, sometimes slightly modified, constitutes or 'fonnB part of the names of thirty-seven townlands in Ireland. From the form of the name and from the distribution and posi- tions of the townlands I think it may be shown that the word ' Brittas' is not of Irish origin at all, but represents the Old French breUtcke, or rather, more immediately, an AHglo-Norman or a Middle-EngliBh form of that word. From all the available data it may be inferred that the term was used in Ireland in early Anglo- Norman times to denote a complete fortress, consisting of a wooden tower, often but not always placed on a mote, or mound of earth, surrounded by a fosse and earthen rampart, and (as we may suppose) further protected by a palisade ; that these towers we*e erected by Anglo-Norman or English settlers in the twelfth and early part of the thirteenth centuries; that though in some early cases there is evidence that they were the principal fortresses VOL.
