PANELIST BIOGRAPHIES CATE ADAIR Catherine Adair was born in England, spent her primary education in Switzerland, and then returned to the UK where she earned her degree in Set & Costume Design from the University of Nottingham. After a series of apprenticeships in the London Theater, Catherine immigrated to the United States where she initially worked as a costume designer in East Coast theater productions. Her credits there include The Kennedy Center, Washington Ballet, Onley Theater Company, The Studio and Wolf Trap. Catherine then moved to Los Angeles, joined the West Coast Costume Designers Guild, and started her film and television career. Catherine’s credits include The 70s mini-series for NBC; The District for CBS; the teen film I Know What You Did Last Summer and Dreamworks’ Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Currently Catherine is the costume designer for the new ABC hit series Desperate Housewives. ROSE APODACA As the West Coast Bureau Chief for Women's Wear Daily (WWD) and a contributor to W, Rose Apodaca and her team cover the fashion and beauty industries in a region reaching from Seattle to Las Vegas to San Diego, as well as report on the happenings in Hollywood and the culture-at-large. Apodaca is also instrumental in the many events and related projects tied to WWD and the fashion business in Los Angeles, including the establishment of LA Fashion Week, and has long been a champion of the local design community. Randy Brecker, Grammy winning trumpeter Gabriel Mark Hasselbach - Midcentury Modern Volume 2 FOUR out of FIVE STARS Gabriel Mark Hasselbach, trumpet/flugelhorn/flute/valve trombone; Miles Black, piano/organ/bass; Joel Fountain, drums; Cory Weeds, saxophone; Ernie Watts, saxophone; Gord Lemon, electric bass; Olaf DeShield, guitar; Laurence Mollerup, acoustic bass. Trumpet master and multi-talented musician, Gabriel Mark Hasselbach opens with a tune called, “Superblue.” This composition is a super slick and straight-ahead, featuring Miles Black, brilliant on an attention-getting piano solo. Gabriel is a gifted horn player who enjoys crossing genres and blending styles. He can play it all, from Bebop to R&B; Pop to Smooth jazz. The repertoire and melodies on this volume 2 “MidCentury Modern” production are catchy. They’re familiar. the horn lines punch bright, staccato lines that punctuate these unforgettable tunes. The Hasselbach arrangements are well-written. On the second track, “Driftin’, “Cory Weeds steps into the spotlight on saxophone and he swings hard. The 3rd track on this album proffers a Latin groove, combined with a straight-ahead jazz production that reminds me of the infectious music of the late, great Eddie Harris. Gabriel Mark Hasselbach records party jazz. His music makes me happy. You feel joyful energy and emotion from these musicians. In Hasselbach’s discography of fifteen album releases, there are only a few mainstream albums. Most of his music has been geared towards the contemporary jazz market.

Introduction A FIRST music DJ is a part of the team/crew firstly, and must understand that the event and the games are The Show. The DJ's performance, however, can make or break the event. Hitting the cues, playing the right tunes, and being consistent, brings out a sense of professionalism that will endure the performance to everyone involved. This is a sporting event, not a radio-station, or someone's iPod, or even a club. The focus is much different. The music must be upbeat and positive, may contain interactive elements, and during matches can create tension and suspense. But the bottom line is that at the end of the day "everybody has a good time", including the DJ. This playbook is written with the intent of taking some of the guesswork out of "what to play and when". It is written with much love for this genre that I call Sportsmusic… The Goal Create a playlist of music that will not only be inspiring, motivating, and uplifting but one that will also create a positive atmosphere that promotes gracious professionalism. We will accomplish this by creating files that are edited to give a "tighter" flow to the games. Create a pattern that is easy to follow with limited chance for downtime or "dead-air". The Game Every year the organizers create a different "game" for the robots. But the pattern and process is the same for the DJ. The "M.C." introduces each team in a 3-team alliance, which plays another 3-team alliance. The robots get in place for part 1 of the match: The Autonomous Period, where the robots must compete without any human intervention.

ARTISTS The Compleat Folksinger Scott Ainslie Consummate: It’s mid-November, 2003, and I’m sitting in the darkened Starlight Guitarist Room of Kutscher’s Hotel & Resort. We’re listening to blues singer Scott Ainslie preface a performance of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroad Singer Blues.” He’s one of the featured main showcase performers at Writer the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference. In the mid- dle of the brightly lit, circular stage, he gives us the facts Historian behind this classic blues song. For the first time, I learn of Activist the after-dark curfew for black men that existed in the deep South in Johnson’s day. A black man caught out on the high- way after dark risked death at the hands of the Ku Klux by Klan or the local sheriff. As the bottleneck glides over the Richard Cuccaro strings of Ainslie’s 1931 National Steel guitar, I can envision Johnson standing on a dirt road, guitar case in hand, with the sun setting. I’m reading Johnson’s mind with grim clarity as Scott sings: “I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees / Asked the lord above for mercy, say boy, if you please / The sun’s goin’ down, That sun’s gonna catch me here / Lord I’m standin’ at the crossroads, I believe I’m sinkin’ down.” There’s something about Scott Ainslie that spurs a desire to sit down and share a beer or two.
