Dean Young, the creator of “” and alter ego of the all-time sandwich master, Dagwood Bumstead, is launching a restaurant franchise company that is expected to be among the fastest growing in history. The brainchild of Young and restaurant and franchise expert Lamar Berry, Dagwood’s Sandwich Shoppes features a tasty menu, an entertaining comic-strip ambiance and the excellent, congenial service customers would expect from Dagwood, Blondie and their friends.

The unique offerings of Dagwood’s Sandwich Shoppes include:

• Fresh, flavorful and creative food. Sandwiches, salads, soups and wraps with signature sauces and chips. The sandwiches and other menu items are specifically designed to satisfy the taste preferences and healthy food orientation of baby boomers, who have grown up having breakfast with “Blondie” and now have an opportunity to have lunch with Dagwood.

• A décor and ambiance that draws heavily on the “Blondie” . Customers will step into Dagwood’s world of bright colors and enjoy reprints of food-related “Blondie” comic strips and familiar characters. A giant plasma screen will stream more than 25,000 Blondie strips that have appeared over the past 75 years in publications worldwide.

• An easy-to-operate facility that can be up and running within 60 to 90 days of site selection. A Dagwood franchise is a turnkey operation that includes site location, financial and insurance services, real estate support, and fully integrated training and support systems, as well as a restaurant layout and design package that “drops” into a 1,200-to- 1,500-square-foot space that would be appropriate for food courts, strip malls and office buildings or sites such as airports, hospitals and bus and rail stations.

• A network of Market Partners who purchase the rights for exclusive territories where they contract with and provide support for individual Franchisees. Improving on the business model of other quick-serve franchises, this approach accelerates market penetration.

The Sandwich Category Keeps Growing

According to Technomics Inc., a market research firm specializing in the restaurant industry, sandwiches accounted for two-thirds of the growth among limited-service restaurants between 2000 and 2003. From 2003 through 2005, the sandwich segment climbed 17% – adding nearly $1.9 billion in annual sales. Technomics reports that the sandwich category is the fastest-growing segment of the restaurant industry.

The Sandwich Consumer Today’s sandwich consumers are primarily baby boomers. The group that launched the fast- food phenomenon is now seeking more flavorful, sophisticated and healthful alternatives. According to “Chain Leader,” sandwich consumers have the following characteristics:

• 51% male and 49% female • 62% over 35 years of age, with heavy users between 45 and 54. • 61% are married – and are the strongest over-consumption group • 53% have incomes in excess of $50,000 – and the strongest over-consumption group is $50,000 to $75,000. • White collar workers (14%) and students (11%) are the over-consumers of sandwiches • 63% have a college education and are over-consumers.

Dagwood’s research has also found that sandwich consumers enjoy watching their food prepared to order and particularly favor hot-toasted sandwiches. Dagwood’s Sandwich Shoppes will offer both.

Dagwood and Blondie: 75 Years Young

For 75 years, Dagwood and Blondie have delighted readers around the world in one of the most widely read comic strips in history. The strip was created in 1930 by Dean Young’s father, , who died in 1973. Dean Young took over “Blondie” and has kept the tradition alive and well, moving the strip and its characters into contemporary lifestyles while maintaining the early themes of life, love, family and work.

Today, “Blondie” is syndicated by King Features and appears in 2,300 newspapers with 280 million readers worldwide.

Twenty-eight feature films have been made about Blondie and Dagwood, and the famous husband and wife also have appeared over the years in two television series, a television special, several books and a radio show.

And the signature “Dagwood” sandwich also has made it into Webster’s New World Dictionary, defined as “a multilayered sandwich.”

Food Product Design Dean Young and Geoffrey Rhode

The menu at Dagwood’s Sandwich Shoppes is the result of the collaboration of Dean Young and Geoffrey Rhode. Young, a confessed foodaholic, has been collecting sandwich recipes for more than 20 years. Rhode has studied under luminaries such as Paul Prudhomme, Emeril Lagasse and Warren LeRuth and is a leader in the world of food and menu product design. As executive chef technician, Rhode will ensure that Dagwood’s product line beats all competitors in ongoing consumer taste tests.

Facility Design National Restaurant Designers is designing the functional interiors of Dagwood’s Sandwich Shoppes. Filled with color and images of the Bumsteads and their friends, the shops will welcome customers into Dagwood’s comic strip world. Every day, new comic strips will stream onto a plasma screen to entertain and delight customers as they watch food preparations. The cartoons will be downloaded daily from Dean Young’s trove of more than 25,000 strips.

Site Location and Project Management Colliers International, the country’s second largest commercial real-estate firm, is the project manager from site selection through handing keys to the Franchisees. It has more than 2,500 commercial brokers coast to coast.

Fabrication, Equipment, Installation Paramount Restaurant Supply, a leader in restaurant design consultation and food service equipment, is providing the equipment and millwork installation for Dagwood’s.
