Project Framework & Achievements
Project Objective: Contribute to sustainable improvement of natural resource management at important feeding areas of non-breeding populations of Sarus Crane in lower Mekong Delta in Cambodia.
Component 1. Improvement of community members‘ livelihoods so that the pressures on Sarus Crane habitat and feeding areas are reduced for sustaining the presence of the Sarus Cranes and other water birds. Component 2. Improvement of community environment in order to safeguard the Sarus Crame habitat and feeding areas. Component 1. 1.1.Ten existing Self-Help Groups (SHG) receive additional required technical supports so that they can continue the development of alternative livelihoods in the three target villages. Achievement: their savings accumulated to $ 28,489 and provided 138 loans with the amount of $ 22,809 to 106 members for micro-business development.
1.2.Three Farmer Field Schools (FFS) established to run sustainable farming demonstrations. Achievement: FFS concept was introduced and some trainings were provided which include: - Drought resilient farming activity, SRI, and home gardening. - Small scale irrigation including wells and ponds were also constructed for IFS/SRI. -Farmers started applying drought resilient farming activity as demonstrations.
1.3.Farmer Producer Groups (FPGs) are established and have the capacity to organize common marketing for their members. Achievement: FPGs are introduced.
1.4.Capacity of Community-Based Ecotourism Team (CBET) will be improved so that they can enable provision of high quality experience based around Sarus Crane conservation at Anlung Pring. Achievement: Over the period of 9 month (April-December 2014), there were 143 visitors came to Anlung Pring conservation reserve. It made US$ 462 of income. Three Eco-Schools (ES) servicing at least 1,000 students were initiated in order to raise awareness about the environmental knowledge and practices especially on Sarus Crane protection. Achievement: a training module consisting of 10 topics and teaching guide were established and the training was initially provided. 2.2. Three Village Environment and Sarus Crane Conservation Action Team (VECAT) concept is just introduced and will be established in late of March.
