The Bend Trap Club welcomes you to the 2014 Championships. As the premier trap club in the Pacific Northwest, this will be the first time hosting the OSTA-PITA State Championships in our new facility.

The Bend Trap Club hosted its first OSTA-PITA shoot in 1938 at the Brosterhous facility, with a total of 244 registered shooters. The last state shoot in Bend was in June of 1966 where Jack Barron ran 100 straight in the Handicap. A few squads later, Jim Rice also turned in a perfect 100. The shoot -off was won by Jim Rice (25-25), over Jack (25-24).

In 2006, the Brosterhous facility was sold. In the Spring of 2007, Del Jeske found the 280 acres for the new trap club and October of 2007, new ground was broken with the help of many volunteers. President Bill Grafton and board members set out on a mission of perfection.

In April 2008, the first shot at the new facility was fired, and in July 2008, the first registered shoot was held. Their vision was fulfilled. Next, a combination skeet/trap overlay was completed in February of 2009, and finally, a 5 stand/ skeet field in July of 2010.

For anyone planning to attend the PITA shoot the following week, the club is offering free parking for those who want to leave their trailers or stay. The local area offers many exciting things to do: fishing, hunting, and 111 miles of ATV trails just 10 minutes from the club.

Also, don’t forget our Hot August Days shoot the 9th & 10th of August. There will be $ 2,000.00 in added money and a barbeque fit for a king.

I would like to thank the OSTA Board for allowing us to trade with Cottage Grove-Eugene Sportsmen’s Club and bring this State Shoot to Bend.

Finally, a big THANK YOU to Herb Kelly (the Club Energizer Bunny), board members, members, and volunteers who donate their time. I can’t thank you enough for what you do, whether it be keeping the club open or helping out with our shoots.

President, Don Porfily

2 WELCOME TO THE 2014 OREGON STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Welcome to the PITA Oregon State Championships. My thanks to the Bend Board of Directors and to the OSTA Directors for all their work in preparing for this shoot. It has taken work from many more than just these few I mentioned, I also want to thank the many volunteers and club members who have made this facility and club what it is today. Bend is the newest and most modern of the gun clubs in our state and we welcome them back into our rotation of sites for the state shoot. I am also grateful for the financial support from our sponsors and advertisers. Be sure to support their businesses and thank them for supporting us. Rusty & Jennifer, I personally thank you for all the work you do putting this program together. Shooters, take a look at the impressive trophy package on display in the clubhouse.

The OSTA and the Bend Trap Club are again giving you a chance to win all of your State Shoot entry fees. Tickets are $ 5 each, if you win and you can’t attend, you may transfer the ticket to someone else. See a State Board member or a Bend Trap Club member to buy your raffle tickets.

Please attend our General Meeting on Friday. This is an opportunity for you to voice your concerns and opinions and to cast your vote. All members of the Oregon PITA need to encourage new shooters to join the PITA and participate in registered shoots. We Oregonians also need to increase our participation at the Grand Pacific in July.

This year, I would like to challenge each of you to get more involved in your home gun club. Volunteer, mop the floor, load the trap houses, keep score, make the coffee, empty the trash. The club belongs to its members. It belongs to you. Become a part of it. I believe that when you do this, you will enjoy your time there even more and you may even find yourself helping out at a club you visit. We have noticed several clubs where apparently many members work together to make the club and shoots a friendly, well-run place. It’s fun to visit those clubs and shoot there, and it is easy to want to support their events, their clubs, and our sport.

Enjoy yourselves, stay safe, and shoot better than I do!

Lyle Pope, OSTA President

Mike Bonn’s son, Brad Bonn, was born with cystic fibrosis and because of advancements in treatments, people like Brad are living long and productive lives. In the 1950’s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to Elemen- tary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30’s, 40’s, and beyond.

Dr. Neal A. Goldsmith, MD

Neal Goldsmith was born September 20, 1926 on a 120-acre horse-drawn dairy farm in Grabill, Indiana. He was raised in a small tight-knit farming community of Mennonites and Amish during the Great Depression and this environment forever influenced his values. Neal went on to study medicine at the University of Indiana and while in Indianapolis, he met his wife of 64 years, Gertrude Frances Julow.

Dr. Goldsmith volunteered for the US Navy as a medical doctor during the Korean War and was honorably discharged from the military in 1956. After the war, he moved his family to Bend in 1958 and worked at the Bend Memorial Clinic, Saint Charles Medical Center, and the Redmond District Hospital. He also visited patients at the Madras and Burns Hospitals and performed numerous house calls to many farmers and ranchers in Eastern Oregon.

In addition to his medical career, Neal greatly enjoyed downhill skiing, back-packing, black and white photography, golfing and trapshooting. Neal was the Bend Trap Club President from 1981 through 1983. His quiet, calm demeanor and subtle sense of humor will be missed by all at the club.
